Wow, darned if that didn't sound like a Craig Milliron groaner. Well, since we last talked we have taken delivery on the six Jet 12/21 lathes for our education program.

If you haven't been watching the auction that Chris Smith set up for us to liquidate the extra lathes that we have accumulated over the years, you're missing out on some exciting entertainment.

As of this writing all of the lathes have active bids on them, so they will be sold.

Seems like just last month it was July. Wow, darned if that didn't sound like a Craig Milliron groaner. Well, since we last talked we have taken delivery on the six Jet 12/21 lathes for our education program. It is good to think of how much cooperation went into making this happen. All that had anything to do with this deserves to take a bow. A proud moment for Nor-Cal Woodturners for sure. Well, it's exciting for some people. Take a look before the auction ends on 11:45 pm. Might be a deal there you can't pass up, who knows. There is more than one way to take advantage. One is to let the instructors help you with anything you need to further your turning experience. Or two, come and offer your experience to help others with their journey. Either way you're going get something from the workshops. Give Jerry Hall, or Ted Young a call and see how to help with the activities of our club. I want to thank everyone that participated in the Pigtail Flipper BBQ Turner Presidents Challenge. There were some very interesting and beautiful turners in the competition. Well done and congratulations to the winners. I'm looking forward to the upcoming meeting, because we have a great demo planned. It will be Neal DeVore sharing his experience in woodturning. Should be a fun and informative social event. Another is that everyone is willing to share that knowledge. If you have a "specialty" or even just a turning project that has "turned out" well, please consider sharing that by demonstrating at one of our club meetings. It can be a ½ hour demo (and we'll combine it with someone else) or a one hour demo. For those who haven't demonstrated before, we have added a page to our website titled "How To for Demonstrators. It's under the Members Only section at the bottom. Please consider helping the club by sharing your knowledge. Just let Tony or Jimmy know and they will get you on the schedule.

Page 4 Bring your bowls To the meeting Last year the River City Food Bank raised a net income of $ 134,000!!! A big THANK YOU to all of you who helped make this event so successful.

They provided over one million pounds of healthy food to people facing hunger in Sacramento. The Empty Bowls program is their major fundraiser.

Please remember we will be collecting bowls all year long, so to avoid the rush next February, bring your bowls to any of the club functions.

This donation came just as we are standardizing the lathes for the program so we don t need it.

4 Page 4 Bring your bowls To the meeting Last year the River City Food Bank raised a net income of $ 134,000!!! A big THANK YOU to all of you who helped make this event so successful. The Food Bank helps our community s neediest residents. In 2013 they served over 70,000 people, including 17,000 children and 8,000 seniors. They provided over one million pounds of healthy food to people facing hunger in Sacramento. The Empty Bowls program is their major fundraiser. It is an ongoing event that Nor-Cal Woodturners continues to support. Please remember we will be collecting bowls all year long, so to avoid the rush next February, bring your bowls to any of the club functions. N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s Lathe, Chuck and Tool Raffle A generous donor gave a gift of an almost new lathe, chuck and tools to the Youth Training Program. This donation came just as we are standardizing the lathes for the program so we don t need it. The donor said it was OK to sell the items we don t need and use the funds toward the Youth Training program, so the Board decided to raffle them off. The items are: 1) Jet 1014 Mini Lathe and Stand 2) Nova G3 Chuck with one set of jaws 3) A beginner s set of turning tools From the July through September meetings we will be selling tickets for $ 5 each. No need to be present to win. Just purchase your ticket(s) Thanks again for all your support. at any one of the meetings. We will pull out the name and announce the winner on September 22nd. If you know someone who is just getting started, or you d like a smaller lathe for turning pens, bottle stoppers, small bowls, etc this would be a great lathe. Good Luck!!

More Woodturning Magazine Events Calendar Listing - August 2015 N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s Nearly two years ago, I had rough-turned and cored a nice 10 inch maple bowl. I decided to finish it and do some form of decoration on it. The decision was to put a circle of 24 dots of a contrasting wood on the top of the rim of the bowl. So, when I finished turning the bowl, I left the top of the rim wider than I normally would. This was shortly after I acquired one of Richard Benham s Rim Chucks so I tried using the Rim Chuck to turn the foot of this rough turned bowl to fit my Nova Chuck with large jaws. The bowl was a bit warped on top and somewhat out of round; however, it fit nicely into the Rim Chuck so I could turn the foot to fit my chuck (see the photo) below. I never trust any of the reverse-chucking devices completely and normally give additional support with my cup-shaped live center as shown in the photo. Adding Decoration To a Bowl By Fred Holder I don t turn a lot of bowls each year, perhaps 12 to 15 at the most, and often they are small bowls that are never finished because they were used to test a tool or show a student how to turn a bowl. I seldom apply any decoration to a bowl, but occasionally I do get an urge to try something different. This story is about such an occasion. Using a Rim chuck to turn the foot of my rough turned bowl. With the foot turned to fit into the chuck, I mounted the bowl in the chuck and final turned the outside and the inside. Incidentally, I used the cup-shaped live center to support the bowl in the Nova Chuck also. This allows more aggressive turning without concern of losing the bowl from the chuck.

Drill Wizard. Once the glue was dry, I turned away the tops of the plugs, finish-sanded, and applied finish to the inside and outside of the bowl.

I used some reddish colored wood that we had in inventory. I don t know its name because it came from a scrapped-out crate.

I then used a Forstner Drill in the Oneway Drill Wizard to drill the 24 equally spaced holes, the maximum indexing positions on my Nova DVR 3000.

Drilling the 24 equally-spaced holes with the Oneway Drill Wizard and my 3/8 drive drill motor that had to be purchased to fit the collar of the Drill Wizard. Once the glue was dry, I turned away the tops of the plugs, finish-sanded, and applied finish to the inside and outside of the bowl. This cup-shaped live center doesn t mar the bowl s surface when used as support for the chuck. I used some reddish colored wood that we had in inventory. I used a plug cutter to cut enough plugs to fill 24 holes around the rim of the bowl. The glue used was Tite-Bond 2, which is the glue that I use almost exclusively. I ve never had a glue joint fail with this glue, which is a good reason to continue its use. I would have normally reversed the bowl onto my vacuum plate made by Vicmarc that I ve had for a number of years.

Again, for safety sake, I used tailstock support; something that I do with any reverse turning method, whether it is a jam chuck, a vacuum chuck, a Longworth

The bowl was now ready to reverse and turn the foot. I would have normally reversed the bowl onto my vacuum plate made by Vicmarc that I ve had for a number of years. However, the Rim Chuck was easier to set up and worked very well. I was pleased with the bowl and so was the person who purchased it. If you haven t tried decorating one of your bowls, perhaps it is time that you gave it a try. A couple of days later, while visiting Woodcraft for some flat work supplies, I wandered over to a lathe on display and started to ask questions. I found out that there was a turners club, and as fate would have it, they were going to have a meeting next week. I did not have a lathe and didn t know a thing about woodturning so, I signed up for a mentoring session with Bill Flewelling to see if this would be something I d like. So, the slippery slope began. Sharpening is now done on a slow speed grinder with CBN wheels. While I have a Wolverine set up, I prefer using the Tormek jig, which was used for years before I switched over. My shop is a two car garage that I had set up for flat work. After moving some stuff around, I got the lathe where I wanted it. Notice the shower curtains, I can draw them to keep chips from covering my workbench and the rest of the shop. Of course, 9 times out of ten, I forget to draw them until after I ve finished! Being a hobbyist, and not a production turner, most of my pieces are done one at a time. I like to do hollow forms and most are done with wet wood, start to finish. Turned thin and let to dry. The back of the garage serves as storage for the blanks and chunks of wood. This area is guarded by the occasional Black Widow and other creepy crawlers.

Fortunately, Richard Bell was also interested so, we decided to make two of our own. So began a process that is now about a year in the making. That s the strange looking device between the bandsaw and drill press. Still evolving, a work in progress, if you will. Tool storage is a re-purposed Workmate. Notice, every flat surface has something on it related to woodturning. The various cabinets under the workbench store sandpaper, sanding attachments, chucks, vacuum, Vicmark, centers, etc Cabinets on the far wall house books, catalogs, Beal buffing equipment, wood burner and Dremel. Until recently, I ve used a DIY copy of the Jamieson hollowing rig with a laser for the interior hollowing. I saw an article about using a CCTV so, for $65.00 I thought it would be worth a try. That s what you see in the picture with the rig set up on the lathe. I haven t used it enough to decide if this has any merits.
