NOR-CAL SHAVINGS Newsletter of Nor-Cal Woodturners, Inc. A Non-Profit Corporation and AAW Affiliate September 2015 Volume 28, Number 9 President s Message By Tony White 1(916) President@NorCalWoodturners.org Hello everyone, looks like it's that time again already and a quick month to boot. If you weren't in attendance for the Glenn Lucas demo, you missed one of the best demos that we have had in a long time. All I can say, and I say it almost every time we have a professional among us, is what tool control they have. Right off the tool is like me after two rounds of sanding. But then again I haven't made three or four thousand bowls yet. It makes a difference. Glenn was a very nice man, and he donated a set of his DVDs to the club for having him here. So thank you Glenn. BTW I took Glenn to Folsom Prison while he was here, but they wouldn't take him. So we had to settle for a stay at the museum instead. I would like to thank all of the people that stayed after the demo to help clean up, sweep the floors, and put the chairs away. It helps a lot. I would like to thank Norm Hinman yet again for his participation at our club. You can always count on Norm to come through when you need something. For example this month not only did we need someone to do the demo at the regular meeting, Norm stepped up. And since Norm will be in a teaching mode, he volunteered to lead the hands on turning class over in the Youth Training Center before the meeting, starting at 4:30. Talk about spreading it around. Just disregard the bandage on Norm's arm, it will be from giving blood earlier in the day. I don't know the exact number of gallons of blood Norm has given, but I think it's somewhere near 14. We appreciate you Norm. Don't forget, if you want to share your turning talent with your friends at the monthly meeting, just let me or Jimmy Corbin know and we can make it happen. Your audience awaits. I think I've used all of the space Craig allows me so, until next time, thank you for letting me be president of our club. Tony White Charlie Shrum allery/l

Another is that everyone is willing to share that knowledge. If you have a "specialty" or even just a turning project that has "turned out" well, please consider sharing that by demonstrating at one of our club meetings. It can be a ½ hour demo (and we'll combine it with someone else) or a one hour demo. For those who haven't demonstrated before, we have added a page to our website titled "How To for Demonstrators. It's under the Members Only section at the bottom. Please consider helping the club by sharing your knowledge. Just let Tony or Jimmy know and they will get you on the schedule.
Page 4 Bring your bowls To the meeting Last year the River City Food Bank raised a net income of $ 134,000!!! A big THANK YOU to all of you who helped make this event so successful. The Food Bank helps our community s neediest residents. In 2013 they served over 70,000 people, including 17,000 children and 8,000 seniors. They provided over one million pounds of healthy food to people facing hunger in Sacramento. The Empty Bowls program is their major fundraiser. It is an ongoing event that Nor-Cal Woodturners continues to support. Please remember we will be collecting bowls all year long, so to avoid the rush next February, bring your bowls to any of the club functions. Thanks again for all your support. N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s More Woodturning Magazine is a monthly online magazine that contributes an article and an Events Calendar Events Listing to Nor-Cal Woodturners each month (see below). It is for turners who primarily turn wood. It is designed to provide educational material and guidance in woodturning techniques and to keep you informed about what is happening in the woodturning world. There is a free sample edition for you to enjoy. It has tutorials, articles, product reviews and a turner profile. I promise, you will be impressed. Comprehensive list of woodturning Exhibitions and Symposiums with dates, locations and full descriptions. More Woodturning Magazine Events Calendar Listing - September 2015 Special Event Workshop - Basic Bowl Palmiter School Bldg G 4:30 PM, before the General Meeting. Back by popular demand, we are continuing the pre meeting workshops with a basic bowl session. At recent meetings you saw Neal, Phil and Norm turn bowls. Now everyone wants to turn a bowl. At this workshop Norm will guide you through the steps to turning a basic bowl. If you want to practice before the workshop, detailed instructions are available in the Youth Turning Notes section of the Nor-Cal website. We have lots of walnut, cherry and maple bowl blanks for you to use. Make one for yourself at the workshop and then go home and make one for Empty Bowls.
N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s Page 5 Making a Threaded Needle Case By Fred Holder Provided by More Woodturning Magazine I ve made a number of needle cases over the years and made one for my wife some time back. She was very pleased until she found that when she dug around in her sewing basket, the lid could come off and dump her needles into the basket. Until I obtained the Ray Isles thread chasers, none of my chasers would enter such a small hole as is needed for the needle cases. When I started to make one of these, I tried to use the Nova chuck with the 25mm jaws to hold the pieces while threading. This worked fine for the lid, but I had troubles with the wood moving in the chuck when trying to chase the outside threads for the body of the case. I solved this problem by turning tenons on each end of the blank and gluing on a two inch disk to be grabbed in the 50mm jaws of the Nova chuck as shown below. photo below the lid section is shown in the chuck before drilling. The lid is ready to drill with a 7/16 drill to a depth of about 1/2. Threading the hole in the lid with the inside chasers. The blank with two disks glued to the ends for greater stability when threading. Although it is not needed on the lid side, it is easier to set up the pieces for use in the same chuck. This solved the problem of having the body of the needle case move while chasing threads. The next step was to part off the lid and mount it in the chuck for drilling and threading. I thread the lid first whenever possible. In the Drilling the 5/16 hole to hold the needles. It can be drilled before or after threading.
Page 6 Drill a 7/16 hole in the lid section that is about 1/2 deep. Then round over the front edge of the hole and cut a recess in the bottom of the hole to allow the chaser to cut a clean thread before it would hit the bottom of the hole. When the threads are satisfactory, you are ready to mount the base section for drilling and threading of the tenon that will be threaded. N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s With the threads cut and the lid fitted to the base section, it is time to final turn the outside of the needle case and put in a few decorations with a point tool or a skew. In this photo, the outside of the needle case has been turned and it is ready to part off just in front of the disk holding it in the chuck. Threading the tenon on the top of the base section. The sizing of this tenon can be calculated from the information supplied on the illustration on page 6 of this issue. For this case (with a 7/16 recess in the lid section) the tenon should be slightly over 1/2. I found that a 1/2 tenon cutter would cut a tenon just slightly over 1/2 and would work well for sizing the tenon on this project. I cut a tenon about 3/8 long with the tenon cutter and then cut away the excess down to the tenon. I then used a thin parting tool to make a recess at the rear of the tenon and rounded over the front edge, before hand chasing the threads. Incidentally, the threaded section is 16 tpi. On this project, I drilled the 5/16 hole for the needles after I had chased the threads, but it can be drilled just as well before cutting the threads.
N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s Page 7 This is the completed needle case. I simply sanded the base smooth after parting off. I like to put a bit of a shallow curve to the outside of the needle case. It seems to me to give it more elegant look than if it is just straight sided. You can also put some sort of decoration on top of the lid, which I do sometimes. However, Mildred likes the smoother top and since she is the one who will be using these things, that is good enough reason to make them smooth. The finished needle case with the lid removed. This drawing illustrates how to calculate the size of the tenon for the male threads when the diameter D of the inside threads are known. If you don t have any boxwood or other hard, dense woods, you have two other options. You can use material such as Corian, which threads very well. Or you can cut recesses in both the top and base sections and pour it full of epoxy. A needle case made from Corian. Corian threads very well. This one was not held with the disks, but only in the 25mm jaws of the chuck. I broke off the threaded tenon once and had to shorten the case. Epoxy also threads very well. I first learned of this technique from Petter Herod of Norway. I ve found that a 3/8 tenon cutter that I have works well to cut the recesses for the epoxy, but make sure your epoxy is mixed thoroughly. It must set up properly to work well.
Page 8 Palmiter School Youth Training Program By Ted Young Making a Difference: I continue to hear how we are making a difference in the behaviors of the students. It was the first session of the new school year. The students were working diligently at their lathes and the coaches were watching over them to make sure they were working safely and effectively. The room was silent except for the hum of the lathes. Principal Lauren Roth walked in as she usually does to see how things are going. Her first comment was it sure is peaceful in here. She went on to tell me about some of the conflicts she had to deal with that day. No wonder she loves us! The next week we had a new student. Lauren assigned him to the woodworking club in hopes that we could have a positive effect on him. We are helping staff solve behavioral problems. Permanent Shop: When we move into our new shop space we hope to set up a program where members will volunteer to man the shop during the week. Students will be permitted to go to the shop and work on their projects after they have completed their class assignments. Students will work independently on their projects and the members will be there to monitor for safe practices and help when needed. This is another win-win situation. Members can come and use shop equipment they may not have at home, and teachers can offer a reward for completing assignments. And there is more time to make items for sale at the school fundraisers. Kudos: Richard Bell and Dwight Rutherford are busy making fantastic stands for the new lathes. Jerry Hall is organizing training and preparing project plans. Neal Devore is preparing turning blanks for projects. Phil Harris is maintaining tools and equipment. Ted Young is preparing schedules and interfacing N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s with school staff. Six or seven coaches arrive every Friday to mentor the students. And the students of Palmiter School are participating in the best enrichment program Ms Roth has seen. A high five to all the coaches: Ben Richardson, Carol Myers, Clair Daugherty, Dewayne Stephensen, Frank Rinaldi, Gerald Pierce, Jerry Hall, Jim Sanders, Jim Terrill, John Landis, Lowell Huddleston, Norm Hinman, Pat Daly, Phil Harris, Phil Sargent, Steve Bennetts, and Ted Young. A heartfelt thank you to all the members who have contributed to the youth training program.
N o r - C a l S h a v i n g s Page 9 Raffle Hello everyone. It has come to my attention that some of the raffle prizes that we get from Woodcraft have been returned to the store for cash or credit. This is not the policy of Woodcraft in its relationship with the clubs that they donate to. They sometimes give us things that are on closeout and sometimes we get things at a reduced price, sometimes lower than employee pricing. The management at Woodcraft asks that when we buy things for our raffle that that sale is final and a no return policy is adhered to. Please help me by keeping the no return policy in mind when you win a prize in the raffle. If you have a problem with a raffle prize, please feel free to bring it to my attention. Thank you for your cooperation on this. Our relationship with Woodcraft is important to our club as well as being important to Woodcraft. Please remember to support Woodcraft as they support us and the other clubs. Tony White going to use it? Help is at hand. Epoxy a rareearth magnet to the top of the headstock and you are done. One magnet will hold several items at a time. Dennis J. Gooding, Grants Pass, OR Courtesy AAW Band Clamp for Lathe Storage of Chuck Key Are you always searching for the chuck key or toggle bar? Do you have to stoop or turn around to pick it up every time you need it? Wouldn t it be nice if it were always right on top of the headstock, inches from where you are I like to use my lathe as a stationary workholder to do detail work on turnings. The lathe serves as a third hand, holding the workpiece securely, allowing me to use both hands. I clamp the spindle using a band clamp over the spindle (or chuck) and around the bed of the lathe. I tighten the strap sufficiently to prevent the workpiece from moving, but not so tightly that I cannot easily reposition the work as needed. When I am ready to work another section of my piece, I just grab the strap and give it a little tug. Caution: To be extra careful if you think you might forget the clamp unplug the lathe before clamping the spindle. Wes Jones - Lawrenceville, Georgia Courtesy AAW
