6 Page 6 Lee Whiteside Turning a Three Sided Box Lee Whiteside gave a very interesting demo on making a three sided box using multi axis turning techniques. He begins by roughing a blank to a cylinder about 2-3 in diameter. He marks a horizontal line on the cylinder while it is still on the lathe going from one end to the other. Then he removes the blank from the lathe and using the horizontal line as a reference, marks three lines 120 degrees apart on each end of the piece. The next step is to draw a smaller circle about one half inch in diameter on the end using the same center. The intersection of the small circle with the lines are used as a center to draw an arc which determines the size of each side. Lee then remounts the piece on the lathe using the intersections as three different centers. The piece is turned so each of the three sides are the same. Lee cuts a tenon on each end and completes the box by parting it into two pieces and fitting the lid to the box. To the right is one of Warren Hadley s pieces which featured some of the techniques used in this demo.

7 Page 7 Embellish Your Turnings Demo by Gene and Larry Gene Vincent and Larry DeVries shared their learning experiences from a Dixie Biggs' Arrowmont workshop on carving and burning to enhance and embellish woodturnings. Video from their experience highlighted the Arrowmont grounds, its gallery of woodturnings, and examples of Dixie's work. feel inconvenient at times. ) Micro-motor machine that runs at 50,000 rpm The five basic power woodcarving tools are: ) Hand-held electric rotary tool runs from 5,000 to 35,000 rpm Very affordable and useful for all-around work at a decent power level. ) Flex-shaft rotary tool that runs from 15,000 to 18,000 rpm Lots of torque for plenty of power, but the cable may Not intended for roughing, but available at a reasonable price for detail work and texturing. ) Air turbine machine runs at 400,000 rpm Intended for piercing, will do light carving, accepts small bits only. ) Reciprocating carver- For heavy duty work. To Larry's description, Gene demonstrated carving techniques with a micro-motor machine on small, short grained, hardwood blocks. They followed the five simplified steps to relief carving as taught by Dixie. First, outline the subject with a "stump cutter" or piercing tool. Vertical cuts with square shoulders are the ideal. Second, "waste" or quickly remove stock outside the outline. Third, contour from the deepest relief of the outline cut out to zero depth back at the turned surface. This can be accomplished with a kutzall or a cone-shaped stump cutter. Fourth, using the same tool, contour the subject, which currently stands in full relief. Finally, put a texture on either the subject or the field of relief, adding contrast to enhance the illusion of depth. In the future Gene and Larry plan to offer the club an opportunity to do some hands-on work so members can get a sense of which tools may work well for their own future use. 8 Page 8 From the QCWT President I m not saying goodbye. I will be stepping down however as president of your club, the QCWT. I ll still be around as Vice President. The job of VP is to line up demos for club meetings. I will be trying to pull demos of you, so just be warned and be ready to volunteer. I would like to thank everyone who helped me the last two years. I was never turned down for help. It has been fun. The new president is Art Jackson. I hope everyone gives him the support you have given me. Art and myself have been a team for the last two years and will continue to be a team. I have accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish except for getting urinal fixed in the south bathroom. The QCW board members have accomplished a lot since moving into the DeSoto building two years ago. We have a new video system, four new larger lathes and a new Powermatic lathe for demo machine. We also have a very efficient vacuum system and a new band saw. The board has also expanded the library with help of Ron Curtis. The newsletter and website are second to none! Thanks to Denny Hurd and Teresa Allen for those. But we have accomplished even more than I mentioned. Our main goal has been to educate the public and art community on wood turning and we are accomplishing this. We are being invited to many art functions in the community. The QCW display at the airport gallery thru the QC Arts makes me proud. Twenty artists got their pieces into the Juried show. A few thousand people will view our woodturning art on display there. Pretty Cool! How to Use the new Vari-Grind 2 Jig The club purchased a new Wolverine Vari-Grind Jig with a new grinder. Since the jig is somewhat different to setup, users might want to watch the DVD included with it. Copies of the DVD are available for checkout from our library.. It explains that the tip of the tool should always be 1 3/4 from the jig regardless of the tool or the type of grind desired. It explains how to put a fingernail grind on a spindle gauge by placing the frame at the top of the jig. To put a side grind on a bowl gauge, move it down 4 graduations from the previous setup. For more details check out this DVD.
