2 Page 2 On Tour With Steve Sinner The Demo From the Other Point of View I thought you might like to know what it is like to do a demo for another club. I did an all-day demo and a hands-on for the Ohio Valley Woodturners guild in Cincinnati on the weekend of May 5 th. On Thursday, I spent most of the day disassembling, packing, and loading what seemed like a ton of stuff into my SUV. Wood for demos and some for the hands-on class had been prepared and was included. Friday morning, I left for Ohio and arrived at the home of Len and Lorie Cribbs a little after 6:30. Len and Lorie were to be my hosts for the weekend. They have a beautiful home in a Cincy suburb. We enjoyed a nice red wine while we dined on a variety of finger foods on their deck overlooking the woods behind their home. No gnats, and plenty of birds to watch at the feeders. L & L are native Texans and good conversationalists. Soon it was time to for rest. Saturday morning, Lorie had fixed a breakfast casserole of eggs and sausage. Spicy, and very good. I had to curb my desire to fill up, as I m determined to keep my weight under control. Len rode with me as we drove to the demo site in a church basement. OVWG s meeting room is large and well-equipped. But for moving heavy equipment, it is accessible only by a small elevator. The club s OneWay lathe is a shortbed with a bed extension, to make the trip possible. They keep the lathe and their other equipment in a trailer in the church s parking lot. It works well, and if they wish to take the equipment to another location, it is ready to go. When we arrived, the room was already busy with lots of members socializing and enjoying coffee and doughnuts. There was a display of their work, a table or two of mostly exotic wood for sale, and some other activities, but I had no time to look at any of that. We sat up my stuff and rearranged the audio-video setup to suit my boring demo, which requires different camera angles than most demos. After a few announcements, I was introduced and began my spiel. Time passed very quickly. We had a short break, and soon it was lunch time. Pizza was brought in. Fortunately, Linda Suter, who had contracted my services for the club, was looking out for me and brought me a couple of slices and a Coke. As is common when you demo, there are always those who wish to ask questions and are probably too shy to do so in front of the crowd, so they ask during breaks or after the event is over. I don t mind that I expect it, but it is nice to have help with obtaining food and drink, as well as the more mundane aspects of accomplishing physical setups for the demo. As I chatted with members, I worked at adapting my Robust 25 center steady to the 24 OneWay lathe. With much help and some jury-rigging, we got the job done and the afternoon segment of the demo started.

3 Volume 5, Issue 6 Page 3 After completing the high efficiency deep hollowing demo, I set my Jet Mini on the ways of the OneWay and made a small goblet. The first one was done slowly and with much commentary. Then I began a second one to be done quickly. I d leave them both for the club to keep, raffle, or whatever. But it was suddenly time to quit. I had failed to realize that the demo had to end at three instead of the usual four. No time left now for the micro goblet demos or for a question and answer session. I had to stop right away and we needed to get all that mess cleaned up and all that stuff loaded up, moved upstairs and into the vehicles, as people were already arriving at the church for a wedding that was to begin at 3:30. Again, many members had questions and some wanted to buy tool rests or boring bars, so other members came forward to do the necessary work. We were soon clear of the church basement and ready to load the SUV. This is a bit tricky, as lots of the heavy stuff has to be packed right to avoid damage to it or the other equipment. Len and I returned to his home, and we had a beer and chips to wind down a bit. After a little freshening up, we went to an Italian restaurant for dinner with several members of the OVWG board and their spouses. Next morning, after breakfast, I said goodbye to Len and Lorie and punched in the address of Keith Bundy across the Ohio River in Kentucky. It was about a 45 minute drive. Keith was just back from a teaching stint at John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. His shop is in a two car garage and features a 20 OneWay, a 24 OneWay, and associated equipment, including a good dust collection system. Four of the club s Jet Minis were on hand. To accommodate the deep hollowing, I decided to have each of the six students create a shape on the 20, then hollow it on the 24. Meanwhile, the minis would be used to do the small goblet and the micro goblets. My main problem was to get each student through the hollowing process on just one lathe. The class decided who was the most likely to be fastest at creating that first shape, and he began the process. By the end of the day five of the six had completed the hollowing process. The sixth had to leave early to drive back to Indianapolis. Keith s wife made Sloppy Joe s for lunch, and we had a short break to eat. All the students seemed to have fun making the goblets, finding that what seems to be impossible just takes a bit of knowledge and some practice to develop the skill. We had a small problem with one of the minis, but Keith fixed it and the class hardly missed a beat. Keith also helped me a great deal by offering suggestions to some of the students and keeping an eye out for safety during the day. We finished at four, cleaned up, and loaded the SUV one more time. I headed for home about 4:30, and arrive here about 11:00 with help from the time change. All that was left was to unload the SUV and put all that stuff back where it belongs. Nothing to it!!! 6 Page 6 Making Natural Edge Bowls Ray Hamilton did the May demo and gave us all a chance to see how he makes his natural edged bowls. He mounts the blank with the bark still intact and facing the headstock. He uses a two prong drive center so he can easily reposition the blank so the resulting edges are balanced. After turning the bottom, he adds a tenon for holding in the chuck, then reverses the bowl to finish up. Those of us who went on the shop tour last month got to see Ray s work spaces first hand and his large storage racks of blanks drying and bowls finished. Ray may leave the rough turned blanks to dry for several months before he finishes them.

7 Page 7 Making Pens Dave Vandenboom Session # 1 Sierra Pen Needs- All attendees need to order the following items Sierra Pen Kit Sierra Pen Bushings Drill Bit- 27/64 In My Opinion-- You should order a drill bit so you have the bit for later incase you want to do more of this style pen. ** However you do not need to have one for doing this pen as we will have a drill bit there so you can get your blank drilled. Other things needed for the 1st night Piece of wood-- The wood needs to be 3/4 inches wide x 2 1/8 th -2 1/4 inches long Plans for the first night of pen making. 1. We will go over drilling the blanks. 2. We will cleaning the tubes. 3. We will go over inserting and gluing the tubes in the wood. 4. We will go over milling the blanks. This makes the ends square for turning. 5. We will then do all the above with your blank and tubes. Except for milling as I like to wait until the glue dries. 6. We will have a question and answer session to help clarify any uncertainties you might have. 7. Depending on time we might go over different finishes that you can put on your pen. My basic thoughts are to show you how to do everything you need to get your blank ready to turn into a pen the next meeting. Places to order your Sierra items- Bear Tooth Woods P.O. 8 Page 8 Member News Peaceful River Trading Company Hours: Wed - Sat: 10am - 5pm, Sun 11am - 4pm In our store, called Peaceful River Trading Company, we are trying to showcase local artists. Currently we have paintings by 4 local artists, a potter, a sewer (Eldridge), a sign/plaque maker (DeWitt), and silk flower arrangements (Park View) and a jewelry maker (Princeton). There is a farmer's market vendor (Barb's Garden) on Thursdays from 4-6pm with fresh breads, cookies, granola, assorted jellies and fresh produce (seasonal), and the first Saturday of each month fresh baked goods (cookies and dessert breads). We also carry Amana Salsa in Peach, Pineapple, Cherry and Raspberry in medium and mild flavors along with "Hugs in a Mug" and assorted dips and bread mixes. And everyone is welcome to a free cup of house coffee. Crafters set their own price for their items (we can assist) and Sheila has a tiered space rental & sales commission depending on the amount of items a vendor brings into the store to sell. She also has a contract to be signed, and an inventory sheet for tracking. We have antique furniture and dolls, old and used furniture and other household items, things for the garden or patio, a kids room, an adventures room (A.K. the man's cave) which has camping, hunting and fishing items and some tools. We do have both new and old and seasonal items. We go to auctions, garage sales and estate sales to fill in with odds and ends. We are also starting a list of names of people who do specialty work like restoring and repair of furniture in case customers need someone to refinish or fix something they bought. By the end of summer we should have everything up on our webpage and we will be selling on the internet as well as the running a heat press and the embroidery machine. This is the web address of our site. Please stop by! Always looking for more crafters! So if anyone is interested in selling something they have turned, carved, or hand-made please call the store and ask for Sheila or me. Kit Gleason Dan Gascoigne has a product called TopCote which he buys in quantity and is available for QCWT members for the discounted price of $12. He should have more at our next meeting and it is highly recommended for keeping all equipment rust free and in tip top shape Denny Hurd also has a product used to rub out finishes called Wool Lube. See him for more details or if you want to purchase a quart at only $15 for members
