2 October was the first meeting in the new location at the Agriculture Engineering building. There were not as many attendees as have been in the past so I hope to see more of you at the November meeting, Tuesday, 9 November, at 7:00 PM. If you missed the October meeting and need directions, see page 3 of this newsletter or go to the COW website, Last month s newsletter is there with a map as well as some directions at the top of the web page. Thanks to all who did attend in October. A special thanks to Barb Crockett for her demonstration of the three sided bowl. I am sure several who attended have attempted this challenge and I hope to see some at a future meeting s Show and Tell. Thanks to Fred Dutton for conducting the Show and Tell. There were many excellent turnings as usual as the photos will attest. If you have not brought something in for Show and Tell I challenge you to do so. Our November program features Andi Wolfe who will demonstrate textures via carving and pyrography. Her skill with these techniques turns a normal turning into a piece of art. The total process if very time consuming, so you will only get to see a small portion, but I am sure she will have pictures or items to show the finished products. Andi will be in the main lecture room and John Lloyd will conduct a Beginners Corner in the woodshop. John will demonstrate a Christmas project, whistles. After he shows you how, we will have lathes available for you to turn a whistle. We will have everything there; tools, wood, mentors, etc., all you need is the willingness to try. One last note before I close. The President s Challenge for November is an ornament. There are two categories; 1) 2 inches and smaller; 2) over 2 inches in length. Measurements are from top to bottom of finials. Ornament must be turned, material of your choice, and can incorporate shells or other forms. We will vote for the winners of each category. See you at the meeting. Bruce Bruce Kerns 2
3 New Meeting Location This year we will be meeting at a new location!!!!! Ag Engineering Building Bldg 298, 590 Woody Hayes Drive, Columbus, OH Don t panic, parking is the same. Just walk to the opposite end of the parking lot and go in the Agricultural Engineering Building, that s where the meetings will be. We will be using the large lecture hall for the business meeting (enter through door on far right) and the demos and chip flying will be in the woodshop at the rear of the building. I would suggest that you pay at the parking machine first and then drive closer to the building and park. Parking fees from 6 pm to 4 am in this lot are $5. Parking violation tickets in this lot will run $50. The map below may help with directions. If you click this link: map/building.php?building=298 you will be taken to a section of The Ohio State University Website, that contains a campus map as well as links to Driving directions and a Google Map. 3

November meeting: a. Andi Wolfe will demonstrate surface enhancements in the main class room. She will be able to use the camera system to project if she wants. It can also be used for Show-and-Tell. b. Beginners corner: John had samples of the whistles they will be making. Will need: the grinder, 4 lathes, 4 chucks and 4 sets of tools. Bruce and Mike will arrange to get the equipment. John will need a mentor at each lathe to assist the beginners. There will be a link in the newsletter so people can download the directions for the whistles. Would like to have about 20 chairs in the workshop for the beginners corner. c. Snacks: Nancy will contact Ruth Thomas to see if she can do them. d. Moving the Powermatic: Bruce had sent s about moving it on Thursday since he is off work, but due to people working and the classroom where it will be stored being in use, it was changed to Friday at 1:00. Paul will contact Larry and Bruce will contact Sharon to unlock the current location. Jim will provide a lift truck from WoodCraft. e. Newsletter: Tom has most people s articles f. Mentoring: November 11, 12, 13 at WoodCraft for the Pens for Troops Still need people on Thursday and Saturday to help. At the December 4 th mentoring Walt will demonstrate tops and toys g. The November Steering meeting will be November 30 th instead of the 23 rd. It was decided that the steering meeting would be the last Tuesday of the month instead of the 4 th Tuesday. There will be no steering meeting in December due to the holidays, so everyone needs to be ready to discuss December and January at the next meeting. h. The date of the February meeting might have to be changed to accommodate Kirk De- Heer s schedule, if he is able to work us in his schedule. i. There was a discussion about the Empty Bowl challenge Bruce had talked about at the meeting. The Return to the community project the AAW each year at the symposium is also Empty Bowl. Since we are doing it to thank OSU and to help the local communities, it was agreed that we wanted to still do the local project, but would also support the AAW project. Details to follow on how to accomplish this. j. Jim Baumgardner gave Bruce WoodCraft gift certificates so use as prizes for Show-and- Tell participants. k. Paul mentioned that OSU may want the club to teach woodturning to one of their classes. He will get more details. The condition of the old lathe that OSU has was discussed. 4
