Thanks to the efforts of Sharon Bierman we have been able to relocate in the Ag. Admin. building which is also located on the OSU campus. lease review the calendar in this issue carefully and note that most of this year s meetings will be on a Thursday night rather than Tuesday. The new facility is not available to us on Tuesday nights. The October meeting with Jean-Francois Escoulen could not be moved from Tuesday because of his travel schedule. For this reason, we will meet in the classroom at Wood Werks Supply. This presents space limitations but was the best option available. See details of this meeting elsewhere in this publication. Our new location is a wonderful facility with lots of space to do our thing. The only downside is that we must pay for parking. lease see page 19 for details of the university s ay and Display system. Consectetuer #00 AAW news 11 Officers 12 Ag. 2 Many Good Turns 2 Sept 2009 resident s Ramblings September 2009 Chuck Kemp Well it has been a summer of ups and downs. Just before the AAW Symposium I had to have my gall bladder removed. I had an attack and found out that on a scale from 1-10 my pain was a 15. Two weeks after the surgery Linda and I left for Denver to visit friends and drive to Albuquerque. Our friends live at 7000 ft. and I had altitude sickness for a few days until my body began to adjust. The symposium was a big up. Our own Sharon Bierman was the editor of the AAW Handout Book and rogram. She did an outstanding job and everyone at the symposium agreed that this was the best handout ever. When you see Sharon, ask her to share her copy of the handout book so that you can see the great job she did. There were about 1300 Turners at the Symposium and I particularly enjoyed two sessions. The first one was by ascal Oudet from France. He demonstrated how to make a Sphere Emerging from a Cube. (See picture) The second session s that I enjoyed was by David Springett, Author of Woodturning Wizardry. He showed us how to turn a 6-pointed star inside a cube. I tried this when a got home and my first trial was a dismal failure. I plan to try again. In the middle of the Symposium I got a big down when I found out that OSU had pre-empted our Tuesday night meeting time for use by an OSU organization. As you can see, elsewhere in this newsletter, our first meeting will be on Thursday September 24 th. Remember that we have to pay $3.00 to park and the meters only take coins or credit cards. lan to car pool with friends to save a buck or two. I returned home from the symposium with the task of finding a new meeting night, a new newsletter editor, and a new show-n-tell photographer. Fortunately Barbara Crockett came to our rescue. She is the new Newsletter editor and the coordinator for our December Gallery Show. We still need someone to step forward to be the club photographer. Let me know if you can help. The club offered, for the second time, a Young Turners rogram and we had six young turners attend 3 sessions in July. Our article about the program has been accepted by the AAW for publication in the Journal either late this year or the first part of next year. If you haven t helped with one of these classes you re missing a real treat. Thanks to Joel Hawley, Don Leman, Devon almer, Bruce Kerns, Jim Burrowes, Barbara Crockett, Walt Betley and Jeff Gerken for acting as instructors and mentors for the program. We had four open shops this summer and I have a serious case of shop envy after visiting the shops of Denise Brooks, Ron Coleman, Jim Burrowes and JR Beall. At JR Beall s open shop, Mark Damron bought one of JR s old metal lathes for $1.00 see what you missed? Get Mark to tell you about the monster. Your officers met on August 13th and have developed a plan for the coming year that has me really excited. Visits from Jean-Francois Escoulen, Betty Scarpino, and Mike Mahoney will let us see some of the best-of-the-best. Meeting demos by Freddy Dutton, Devon almer and Jim Burrowes will highlight some of the great turners we have in the club. So, all in all, I am excited about the upcoming year. But we have yet another down note to start the year. On August 25 th while your steering committee was meeting to finalize plans for the year, someone stole our trailer with all our Jet 1220 lathes and tools. We are doing all we can to help the police find the thieves but I am not optimistic. If you see someone trying to sell used JET 1220 lathes let your club officers know, they may be ours.

COW MENTORS AT WORK... Many Good Turns 4 Sept AND AT LAY! s MORE MENTORING ON THE SCHEDULE FOR THIS YEAR It is that time of year when the leaves start to turn, the temperature starts to drop and the COW mentoring program gets back under way. This year, the mentoring program will have a different format. First there will be a featured topic for each mentoring session. Second we will have some well experienced turners to help answer question. and lastly: more fun will be had by all. At the regular monthly meetings, we will be holding a Q & A at the break. So mark your calendar for the following dates. September 19 from 9-12 our first mentoring will be held a Wood Werks. October 12 Wood Craft will have the factory rep there to a demo the sorby tool, 1:00-4:00 & 6:00-9:00 November 14 from 9-12 will be at Wood Werks. December 12 From 9-12 will again be at Wood Werks. Topic will be announced at the meeting. If you have any questions or topic that you would like to see or discuss please give aul N Courtright a call at or him at courtright.23@osu.edu

RESIDENT S CHALLENGE Thanks to all of you who participated in last years resident s Challenge. This coming year I am planning something different. The resident s Challenge will be in four parts. At the September meeting I will accept sign-ups for the challenge and each person wanting to be in the challenge will pay a one-time $5.00 fee. This money along with any other money we collect for the challenge will be given to a charity of the clubs choice. So far the suggestion we have for a charity are: Operation Feed and Meals on Wheels. If you have a favorite charity let me know and I will add it to a list. At the end of the year all money collected will be donated to a charity selected by the club Here is how the challenge will work. When you sign up you will receive a block of wood to be turned. The block for September will be a 4 x 4 x 6 block of Ash and you must return a finished turning at the November meeting. Members of the club will vote for their favorite turning by putting a quarter in a can associated with each entry. Members may vote, as many times as they wish but each vote will cost a quarter. At the November meeting the turning that gets the most votes will receive a $20.00 gift certificate to Woodcraft. All the votes, (quarters) will be added to the fund for the club charity. At the November meeting, all members participating in the challenge who submit an entry will receive a second block of wood to turn for the meeting in January. In January you will get a third wood block to be turned and returned at the March meeting and the fourth part of the challenge will be due at the May meeting. You can sign-up for the resident s Challenge in September or any meeting in which we vote for the best-turned piece. Many Good Turns 5 Sept 2009 The rules are: 1. Any object submitted must have some part of it turned on a lathe. 2. You cannot add any other wood to the project but you do not need to use the entire wood blank. 3. You can add surface enhancements to the piece as long as they do not include additional wood. i.e. color, epoxy, inlace, gold leaf, scorching, pyrography, etc 4. You can cut up the wood in parts to do things like segmenting or turning two different things from the block. 5. If you cannot attend a meeting where there will be voting on the projects you may send your entry with someone else and this will entitle you to the next wood block. I need to know in advance if you plan to participate so that I can have a wood blank for you at the meeting. So please send me an (ckemp001@columbus.rr.com) so that I can have a blank for you. Here is any example of how it will work. Say, at the September meeting 12 people sign up and pay their $5.00. Each of them will be given a 4 x 4 x 6 ash blank. At the November meeting, suppose that 8 members turn in an entry and have it voted on by the members at the meeting. The person getting the most votes (remember vote the Chicago way early and often) at 25 cents a vote will receive the $20.00 gift certificate to Woodcraft. All of the 8 will receive a second wood blank. If any member wants to join the challenge they can pay $5.00 and receive the second wood blank. If you get a wood blank and don t return it at the next challenge meeting you can buy back in for another $5.00. Anyone who returns a finished project at the meeting gets the next wood blank at no cost.. At the end of the year, (May Meeting) all money, including the 25-cent votes, will be donated to charity. All submitted entries become the property of the club and will be auctioned at a club meeting next year. Any money we make from the auction will also be donated to charity.

ASK THE ROS... Each month we will submit your questions to some of our more experienced turners. lease send questions you would like to have answered in this newsletter to Chuck Kemp. Many Good Turns 6 Sept 2009 This month s question was: When I do cross grain bowls I have trouble with tear out in the two areas where I am turning up-hill. i.e. where the end grain is not supported by flibers below it when cut. What can I do to eliminate this problem or at least make it such that I can sand out any small pits? response from Freddy Dutton To prevent tear out in crossgrain wood, the following techniques have worked well for me: On the outside of the bowl, use the left side pulling from the bottom to the top with a shearing cut. I use a bowl gouge that is sharpened, and on the inside of the bowl use the very sharpest side. Use the left side of a very sharp bowl gouge, and do a very light cut (two or three passes to remove the tear out) Also, take very light cuts to remove all the tear out In stubborn woods, apply some oil to soften the grain. This has worked well for me. If you have other questions, let me know. Freddy Dutton response from Floyd Anstaett Use a freshly sharpened gouge. s Use a freshly and properly sharpened scraper Make light finishing cuts with the gouge with the bevel rubbing and the cutting edge at a shearing angle of maybe 35 to 45 degrees to the material being cut. Cut from the small to the large diameter with the gouge if possible. Cutting from the large to the small diameter, if done with a light, shearing cut with a freshly sharpened gouge will also work. I probably cut from the large to the small diameters as often as I cut from the small to the large diameter. It s critical that the bevel is rubbing on the large to small cut. Using a properly sharpened scraper in a shearing angle from the small to the large diameter will help to clean up the surface. When sharpening a scraper one needs to remember that the existing burr is the edge that has been used and is probably dull and possibly broken. As a result, I like to lay the face of the scraper on a flat stone and remove the old burr and polish the surface of the scraper. Then I sharpen the scraper using the grinder which raises a new burr. I then again lie the scraper flat on the stone and remove the new burr which leaves me with a perfectly sharpened edge at the junction of the top or the scraper and the bevel. I then raise a new burr using a light touch on the Veriitas bench mounted burnishing tool. All this messing around with the scraper, if done correctly, will produce an extremely sharp, smooth and strong burr which if used in a light, pulling type shearing cut from the small to the large

diameters will produce shavings and fluff and will probably do as much to smooth up the surface of your bowl as anything you can do. One needs to remember that what you are dealing with here is both surface damage and subsurface damage since regardless of what you do you will be cutting against the grain at some point on the bowl. The sub-surface damage is what will give you fits. You can have a perfectly smooth looking surface only to wind up with a splotchy looking finished surface if only the surface damage is dealt with. roper sanding, and despite what some people will claim, quite a lot of it is the answer to a well finished bowl. Using water between the grits to raise the grain is helpful as is sanding in both a clockwise and counter clockwise rotation if you are fortunate enough to have an electronic variable speed lathe. A reasonable amount of back and forth spot sanding by hand is also sometimes required. response from Jim Burrowes Sharp tools and proper speed. Many Good Turns 7 Sept 2009 AAW resident Bill Haskell recognized Sharon Bierman at Albuquerque for the design and development of this year s symposium handout book. With profiles and instruction provided by more than 57 world-renowned turners and with more than 510 color pixtures and drawings, it became a favorite with the attendees. Order your own copy of this keepsake by visiting $15 for AAW members, $25 for non-aaw members. hoto Credit: Andi Wolfe

GUEST WOODTURNING DEMONSTRATOR Many Good Turns 8 Sept 2009 JEAN-FRANCOIS ESCOULEN Will be demonstrating for Central Ohio Woodturners for their monthly meeting on Tuesday October 13 th. The Ohio State University does not have available space for us on that evening and because of Jean-Francois travel schedule, the date could not be changed. WoodWerks Supply has kindly offered the use of their classroom for the evening. Space in the classroom is limited to 80 persons. For that reason we will be taking sign-ups in advance beginning at the September meeting. We are asking for a sign-up fee of $5 to help insure that those who sign up will actually attend. If there are more than 80 sign-ups, a waiting list will be kept and we ask that anyone signed up who decides not to attend let Craig Wright know immediately so that the next person on the waiting list might be offered the opportunity. If you cannot make the September meeting but want to attend this session, please contact Craig Wright by at woodturnerdude@gmail.com or by phone at Jean-Francois Escoulen has been turning wood since 1972.He began as an apprentice in his father s cabinet shop where he turned spindles for furniture for 15 years. As a result of this intense practice, his tool skills are s phenomenal. By the time he was ready to turn artistic pieces he had the tool technique to turn pieces that are limited only by his imagination, which seems to know no end. He is an outstanding teacher with incredible patience and a gift for explaining his techniques to others. Don t miss out on this exciting opportunity to learn from one of the world s finest right here in Columbus, Ohio. HANDS-ON CLASS WITH JEAN-FRANCOIS Jean-Francois will also be teaching a three day hands-on class on Sat, Sun, & Mon October 10, 11 and 12. This will be an intermediate/advanced level class for a maximum of 6 students. Cost for the three days will be $350 which will include lunch each day. To sign up contact Craig Wright at woodturnerdude@gmail.com or by phone at

WHAT WE DID ON OUR SUMMER VACATIONS The COWs summer has been filled with woodturning fun and learning. We have had four wonderful opens shops by Denise Brooks, Ron Coleman, Jim Burrowes & Lowell Converse and JR Beall. Thanks to all who hosted these events and a special thanks to Bruce and Nancy Kerns for their terrific organizational skills in managing the picnic portion of these events. In addition to the open shops, many of us attended the American Association of Woodturners national symposium that was held this year in Albuquerque, NM. I will not attempt to list our attendees here because I am sure I would miss someone. A highlight of the symposium for Central Ohio Woodturners was when our own Sharon Bierman was presented with an award at the Saturday evening banquet for the outstanding job she did publishing the symposium handout book which amounted to several months and over one hundred pages of hard and well done work. A picture of Sharon receiving this award can be found on page 12 of the latest American Woodturner Way to go, Sharon! There was also another round of our Young Turners program coordinated once again by Chuck Kemp. Although there were only 6 students this summer, they were eager to learn and well on their way to becoming addicted to the passion of woodturning. The end of the summer always brings with it the Ohio State Fair and this year was no exception. Several COWs were on had the final Friday of the fair to demo, eat junk food and bond with their fellow COWs (both human and bovine) Many Good Turns 9 Sept 2009 Unfortunately we didn t get pictures from all of these events but here are some highlights of our summer..

American Association of Woodturners AAW is the parent organization of Central Ohio Woodturners and as such offers us a wide variety of services and opportunities that only an organization of this size can provide. The American Woodturner will now be published six times per year rather than four. This publication is packed full of tips, tricks and inspiration for woodturners at any skill level and is well worth the price of membership all by itself. Although membership in our parent organization is not required, it is a terrific opportunity to learn more about woodturning and what others are doing across the nation and around the world. Check them out at This year I was appointed to AAWs rofessional Outreach Committee. Our function is to promote professionalism among woodturners and promote the art of woodturning. You will be hearing more from me throughout the year about some of the opportunities we offer. 18 Many Good Turns 18 Sept 2009 Each person who brings back their project will receive a new piece of wood to be returned at the next meeting. Wood will be issued in Sep, Nov, Jan, Mar and voted on in Nov, Jan, Mar, May. You will only have to pay the $5.00 one time. Ron Damon suggested that instead of one poker chip, members could use money(quarters)to vote and the proceeds could be donated to a charity. It was suggested that the $5.00 charge for the wood and the profits from the raffle also be donated. Since our treasury is in good shape everyone thought this was a good idea. There will be a request in the newsletter for ideas for a charity. Craig will track the donations and include the figure with his regular report. A check will be presented to the selected charity at the end of the club year. 6. Mentoring-aul Courtright said they are planning to only have mentoring every other month; Sep 19 and Nov 21 at WoodWerks. aul would like to have 2 lathes; one will demonstrate a specific topic and the other to answer questions. aul will be sure to call and have people lined up to teach the mentoring. He also is planning to have an area at the meetings where people to go to ask questions. Barb suggested having a mentoring list of turners in various areas of the city who would be willing to assist other club members with problems. 7. In conjunction with mentoring there will be a column in the Newsletter called Ask the Experts. Members can submit questions to be answered in the newsletter. 8. Sharon talked about the Ag Admin building. a. Need door stops to hold the doors open b. Keys must be picked up before 5:00 on the day of the meeting c. We need to provide our own cleaning supplies and trash bags-dumpster is outside the kitchen; facility must be left exactly as found. d. The owermatic lathe will be stored on site; Sharon has the key to the room e.
