5 2 Z-Accel Overview. Wireless Made Easy. Z-Accel is a new cncept by TI t make the design f a new wireless prduct r the additin f wireless int existing prducts easy. Z-Accel devices functin as ZigBee netwrk prcessrs, encapsulating all f the cmplexities f wireless int a black bx. A hst prcessr running the applicatin simply cmmunicates t a Z-Accel device via a simple serial interface and well defined API. Z-Accel cleanly separates applicatin and netwrking cmpnents fr simple system design and integratin. The CC2480, ur first prduct in the Z-Accel family, prvides ZigBee made simple. CC2480 prvides a fully cmpliant ZigBee slutin based n the ratified ZigBee-2006 specificatin, and includes a unique preprgrammed IEEE address fr each device. This includes full mesh capabilities, Crdinatr / Ruter / End Device functinality, security, pwer savings, reliable cmmunicatin, interperability, and much mre. The ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit is a cmplete USB-based MSP430 wireless demnstratin tl prviding all the hardware and sftware t evaluate the CC GHz ZigBee netwrk prcessr and the MSP430F2274 micrcntrller. Our demnstratin kit has everything needed t understand and fully evaluate the capabilities f CC2480 in a shrt amunt f time with minimal effrt. The ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit utilizes a free Kickstart versin f the IAR Embedded Wrkbench Integrated Develpment Envirnment (IDE) t write, dwnlad, and debug yur applicatin. 8 4 ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit Quick Start Instructins T get up and running with yur ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit please perfrm the fllwing: Install the ez430-rf2480 Sensr Mnitr applicatin frm the ez430-rf2480 website Cnnect ne f the CC2480 Target bards t the ez430 USB Emulatr bard creating a ez430-rf2480 Dngle which will act as the ZigBee netwrk Crdinatr and a gateway fr cmmunicatin with yur PC. Plug the Dngle int the USB prt. When the Dngle is cnnected t the PC initially yu will see bth RED and GREEN LEDs blink shwing it is awaiting cnfiguratin. Figure 1: ez430-rf2480 Dngle If this is yur first time cnnecting the Dngle yu will be ntified that yur PC has detected new hardware. The driver is a standard windws driver (usbser.sys) and will be detected autmatically. When the first dialg bx appears select N, nt at this time. Then chse t install this driver autmatically. When yu are ntified that the sftware has nt passed Windws Lg testing, select Cntinue Anyway. Please see the ez430-rf2480 Sensr Mnitr User Guide fr further infrmatin if yu have prblems installing the hw driver. Cnnect the remaining tw target bards t the prvided ez430 Battery bards with batteries installed t create Battery Ndes. When the target bards and battery bards are cnnected yu will see bth RED and GREEN LEDs blink shwing the Ndes are awaiting cnfiguratin 6

Run the ez430-rf2480 Sensr Mnitr applicatin The applicatin can be run frm the start menu at All prgrams - Texas Instruments - ez430-rf2480 Sensr Mnitr Establish the Dngle as netwrk Crdinatr-Sink by pressing the buttn n the target bard nce. The device culd take as lng as 10 secnds t setup a netwrk s please be patient. When setup as Crdinatr-Sink the Dngle will display the RED LED as always n. Nte: If bth LEDs remain OFF the Crdinatr has failed t create a netwrk. Please discnnect and reapply pwer and attempt cnfiguratin again until a valid netwrk and Crdinatr is established. Nte: The Dngle is nw bth the netwrk Crdinatr and the applicatin data Sink fr ther devices in the netwrk. Setup a Battery Nde as a Ruter-Surce, meaning it will act as bth a ZigBee Ruter and an applicatin Surce f sensr data, by pressing the buttn nce n the target bard f the Battery Nde. The Ruter can take up t 10 secnds t scan, jin, and bind int the netwrk, s please be patient during this step. When setup as Ruter-Surce the GREEN LED n the Battery Nde will remain ON. Nte: If after trying t cnfigure the Ruter-Surce, bth LEDs remain in the OFF psitin, the attempt t discver r jin the netwrk has failed. Verify that the netwrk Crdinatr has its RED LED ON. If the RED LED is blinking n the Crdinatr then permit jining has been disabled. Press the buttn a single time n the Crdinatr t tggle the permit jining flag t allw jining (the RED LED shuld g int an always ON state). If the Ruter- Surce will nt jin when reset (remve and reapply pwer) then try bringing the device clser t the Crdinatr t make sure it is in RF range). Setup a Battery nde as an End Device-Surce, meaning it will act as bth a ZigBee End Device (lw pwer) and an applicatin Surce f sensr data, by pressing the buttn twice n the target bard f the Battery Nde. The End Device can take up t 10 secnds t scan, jin, and bind int the netwrk, s please be patient during this step. When setup as End Device-Surce the GREEN LED n the Battery Nde will blink at 1 Hz. Nte: If after trying t cnfigure the End Device-Surce, bth LEDs remain in the OFF psitin, the attempt t discver r jin the netwrk has failed. As befre, verify that the Crdinatr r Ruter has the RED r GREEN LED in the 7

10 always n psitin allwing jining. If either r bth des nt, press the buttn a single time t tggle jining state and remve and reapply pwer t the End Device t attempt jining again. Once all devices are cnnected n the netwrk the Surce devices will autmatically perfrm binding t the Crdinatr-Sink Once binding is cmplete the Surce devices will begin t peridically (every 10 secnds) reprt temperature and battery vltage data t the Sink Nte: The RED LED will be used by the Ruter-Surce and End Device-Surce t depict the successful transmissin and receptin f an acknwledgement fr a sensr reprt. If, upn startup, yu d nt see the RED LED blink peridically please first check t ensure that the device is in range f the Crdinatr r a wrking Ruter, and if prblems persist, discnnect pwer frm the device and perfrm cnfiguratin again t try and reslve the prblem. Watch the ez430-rf2480 Sensr Mnitr t see bth Surces cnnect, bserve the netwrk tplgy, and peridically reprt their temperature and battery vltage readings Nte: Once jined t the netwrk, the buttn n the Crdinatr and Ruter devices can be used t turn Permit Jin n and ff. This cntrls whether additinal devices are allwed t jin the netwrk thrugh that specific Ruter and Crdinatr. If yu wuld like t see an End Device jined a hp frm the Crdinatr, simply cnnect the Crdinatr, then Ruter, and turn permit jining OFF n the Crdinatr (press the buttn nce) prir t setting up the End Device. 8

11 5 ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit Hardware 5.1 CC2480 Target Bard Design The ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit cmes with the hardware necessary t demnstrate ZigBee functinality using the CC2480 device. This includes 3 CC2480 Target Bards, 1 ez430 USB Emulatr Bard, and 2 ez430 Battery Bards. All schematics fr these bards are available n the web page. The CC2480 target bard demnstrates Z-Accel by cnnecting a MSP430F2274 t ur CC2480 Netwrk Prcessr ver SPI. The CC2480 target bard is a reference design fr CC2480 and demnstrates the use f Z-Accel designed t minimize bard size utilizing a chip antenna. The target bard includes tw LEDs, ne Red and ne Green, a push buttn, and 5 GPIO lines expsed fr expanding the I/O interface. The MSP430F2274 GPIO pins available n the target bard include P2.2, P2.3, P2.4, P4.4, and P4.5. 12 5.3 ez430 Battery Bard Design The ez430 Battery Bard interfaces t the CC2480 target bard t prvide pwer fr use in mbile situatins. Figure 5: ez430 Battery Bard 10

13 6 ZASA ZigBee Acceleratr Sample Applicatin 6.1 ZASA Applicatin Descriptin The ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit cmes with the ZigBee Acceleratr Sample Applicatin (ZASA), built t demnstrate the functinality and ease f use f the CC2480 device. ZASA runs n the MSP430F2274 and interfaces t the CC2480 device via SPI. The CC2480 dem hardware and MSP430F2274 ZASA sftware, cupled with the ez430- RF2480 Sensr Mnitr applicatin prvides everything needed t demnstrate Z-Accel. The ZASA prject is prvided as a reference prject fr custmers interested in evaluatin r reference sftware n the hst side f Z- Accel. The ZASA prject is built using the IAR Embedded Wrkbench Kickstart fr MSP430 V4, available fr dwnlad n the IAR website ( When running the installer, the ZASA Prject is installed in the C:\Texas Instruments\eZ430-RF2480\Prjects\zaccel\ZASA\IAR\ flder and is titled SampleApp.eww The ZASA applicatin is cmprised f tw types f devices, Surces and Sinks, perating in ptentially all three ZigBee rles; Crdinatr, Ruter, and End Device. Surces prvide temperature and bus vltage readings cllected by the MSP430 using its n chip temperature sensr and A2D cnverter. The ZASA applicatin prvides cde fr perating as either type f device, and allws fr easy cnfiguratin via the buttn n the CC2480 target bard. 11

15 6.1.1 Startup and Cnfiguratin Startup Upn nrmal startup a device will blink bth the RED and GREEN LEDs awaiting cnfiguratin Cnfiguring the Device Type A device can be cnfigured in 2 ways using 1 buttn press r 2 buttn presses based n the desired functinality Pressing the buttn 1 time in 2 secnds will first attempt t jin the device as a Ruter-Surce in an existing netwrk, and if n netwrk exists, will then create a new netwrk as the Crdinatr-Sink. Frm the applicatin perspective nly a single Sink, the Crdinatr, will reside in a netwrk s that all Surce reprts are sent t a single device Pressing the buttn 2 times in 2 secnds will cnfigure the device as an End Device-Surce If, after using the buttn t attempt t cnfigure a device, the device s LEDs are bth OFF and d nt display a clear state (see belw fr LED cnfiguratins as per device state), simply reset the device and try again as there may have been a prblem during scanning r jining. Please make sure a Crdinatr has successfully created a netwrk befre prceeding t cnfigure additinal devices ZigBee Device Types Crdinatr The Crdinatr, upn initializatin, will display the RED LED as always n. The buttn n the Crdinatr will allw the user t tggle permit jining n and ff, with the RED LED in an always ON mde when jining is allwed, and blinking at 1 Hz when jining is nt allwed. The Crdinatr will act as a Sink at the applicatin layer Ruter The Ruter, nce jined t a netwrk, will display the GREEN LED as always n. The buttn n the Ruter will allw the user t tggle permit jining n and ff, with the GREEN LED in an always ON mde when jining is allwed, and blinking at 1 Hz when jining is nt allwed. The Ruter will act as a Surce at the applicatin layer End Device The End Device, nce jined t a netwrk, will blink the GREEN LED at 1 Hz t shw it is cnnected t the netwrk The End Device will act as a Surce at the applicatin layer 13

16 6.1.3 ZASA Applicatin Rle Sink Surce The Sink will allw binding by a Surce at any given time. When data is received frm a Surce the Sink will blink the GREEN LED nce t shw data has been received. If cnnected t a PC running the ez430-rf2480 Sensr Mnitr, the Sink will als send the received data reprt up t the PC fr display n the GUI. Once jined, the Surce will initiate binding t discver and establish a cnnectin with the netwrk Sink. Once bund, the Surce will send peridic sensr reprts. These reprts cntain temperature and battery vltage infrmatin fr the Surce. Reprts will be sent nce every 10 secnds althugh this rate is cnfigurable (see cnfiguratin sectin belw). Data reprts by the Surce will utilize applicatin level acknwledgements. 17 6.2 ZASA Detailed Cde Descriptin This ZASA is intended t demnstrate as cleanly and quickly as pssible hw t drive the CC2480 device, implementing the RPC prtcl acrss the SPI bus, and t prvide a simple demnstratin f ZigBee thrugh the sending and ruting f sensr data. Althugh Z-Accel supprts an extensive range f functinality thrugh a cmplete set f API calls dcumented in the CC2480 Interface Specificatin, this Sample Applicatin nly utilizes the subset f ZigBee functinality prvided by the SAPI, and thus nly implements the RPC fr SAPI (and ne interface n RPC fr SYS.). The Sample Applicatin cde is rganized int the fllwing 5 grups f mdules: APP - Applicatin: This is the custmer-specific cde that implements the applicatin functinality previusly described. HAL - Hardware Abstractin Layer: This is the hst prcessr specific cde that implements the device drivers required fr the UART and SPI; the hardware timer that drives the virtual sftware timers; and the methd f receiving manual user input and f implementing lw pwer peratin. MT - Mnitr-Test: this cde is a sftware abstractin t cmmunicate with a PC Tl. SAPI - Simple API: this bdy f cde prvides the identical r very similar API t the APP cde that it wuld have if it were being written t be cmpiled directly with the ZigBee Stack cde. ZACCEL - This bdy f cde implements the RPC and SPI prtcl required by the ZigBee Acceleratr (CC2480) acting as a slave n the SPI bus. In the Sample Applicatin, a device that is cnfigured t be a sensr is referred t as a "Surce" and a device that is cnfigured t be the single, cmmn cllectr f sensr data is referred t as the "Sink". Thus Sink and Surce are rles defined by the APP cde in slving the case prblem and FFD and RFD are rles defined by the ZigBee Acceleratr in rder t fulfill the ZigBee specified behavirs fr ruting and lw-pwer respectively. This Sample Applicatin itself cmprises the functinality referred t as "hst" - this applicatin must drive the SPI bus as the master and implement the client respnsibilities described in the "CC2480 Interface Specificatin" dcument while the CC2480 fulfills the server respnsibilities. The methd f user input t cnfigure the device is the buttn press. The manner fr cmmunicating state back t the user is by the LEDs. The cde transitins thrugh a series f states depending n user input and CC2480 feedback. The state is tracked by this C-cde variable: static AppState appstate; 15

18 The pssible states are defined by this C-cde enumeratin: typedef enum { appiniting, appwaiting, appjining, appjinwaiting, appbinding, appbindwaiting, apprunning } AppState; // Valid appstate values. The first cde t run after reset is cmpiler-generated and includes such huse-keeping as initializing glbal variables. The first Sample Applicatin cde t run is fund in sample_main.c in this C-cde functin: vid main(vid) After essential initializatin, the prgram lps infinitely, servicing the HAL events that are set bviusly by hardware events, and the ZigBee Acceleratr events that are set by feedback frm the CC2480. The primary respnsibility fr the hst is t act n the ready indicatin frm the CC2480 knwn as slave ready (SRDY) - this signal is plled in the functin appexechst(). The afrementined functin is where the applicatin fulfills its respnsibilities as the hst. After pwer up, this Sample Applicatin (the hst), is in the state appiniting which is t say, it is waiting t initialize the CC2480. CC2480 will always restre its previus netwrk state frm NV memry, unless it was pre-cnfigured nt t d s by the hst befre the last reset. This Sample Applicatin des nt take advantage f the NV restre behavir s as t have a perfectly predictable ut-f-the-bx behavir. Whenever the CC2480 resets, it always sends a SYS API message t indicate that it has reset. Thus, the hst is waiting fr this indicatin when it is in the appiniting state. Upn receiving the reset indicatin, the hst precnfigures CC2480 t nt perfrm NV restre n the next reset and transitins t the appwaiting state. When the hst is in this appwaiting state, bth LEDs will blink at 1-Hz. The user can cnfigure the device as fllws: One mmentary buttn push in a tw-secnd windw cnfigures the device t be an FFD. Tw mmentary buttn pushes in a tw-secnd windw cnfigures the device t be an RFD. When the tw-secnd windw expires, the device is cnfigured and transitins t the appjining state. An FFD will try t jin an existing netwrk as a ZigBee Ruter fr 10 secnds. If it fails t jin, it will start a new netwrk as a ZigBee Crdinatr. An RFD will try t jin an existing netwrk as a ZigBee End Device fr 10 secnds. If it fails t jin, it will stp, the state will transitin t appjinwaiting, and it will enter lw 16

19 pwer fr 30 secnds, and try again repeating the sequence until it succeeds in jining. While in the appjining r appjinwaiting state, the LEDs will be ff. When an FFD starts a new netwrk as a ZigBee Crdinatr, it will set the red LED slid n and allw devices t bind the state will transitin t apprunning and its sub-state will be allwing jins as set by the flag apppermittingf in the variable appflags. The device als maintains a tertiary state, that it is sinking data, as set by the flag appsinkingf in appflags. Whenever a message is acknwledged, the device blinks the green LED nce. The sub-state f allwing jining can be tggled n the Crdinatr by a mmentary buttn press. The sub-state transitins t nt allwing jining by clearing the apppermittingf and the red LED starts blinking at 1-Hz. When an FFD successfully jins an existing netwrk as a ZigBee Ruter, its state transitins t appbinding, and the device sets the green LED slid n. The device uses the SAPI t negtiate OTA and find the device that is sinking data. The FFD will cntinue t request a bind frm the SAPI every 30 secnds until it is successful. Upn successful binding the state will transitin t apprunning and its sub-state will be allwing jins as set by the flag apppermittingf in the variable appflags. The sub-state f allwing jining can be tggled n the Ruter by a mmentary buttn press. The sub-state transitins t nt allwing jining by clearing the apppermittingf and the green LED starts blinking at 1- Hz. Every 10-secnds, the device sets a tertiary state, that it is sending data, as set by the flag appsendingf in appflags. The device requests that the sinking device shuld acknwledge receipt f the data message OTA, s it retries sending the same data OTA up t 3 times every time that the SAPI feedback frm the CC2480 indicates that the message has nt been acknwledged. When the message is acknwledged r the retries have expired, the sub-state f sending data is cleared by clearing the appsendingf flag. Whenever a message is acknwledged, the device blinks the red LED nce. When an RFD successfully jins an existing netwrk as a ZigBee End Device, its state transitins t appbinding, and the device starts blinking the green LED at 1-Hz. The device uses the SAPI t negtiate OTA and find the device that is sinking data. The RFD will wait up t 10 secnds fr a bind request t succeed and then transitin the state t appbindingwait and enter lw pwer fr 30 secnds. The device will cntinue t alternate between the tw binding states and lw pwer every 30 secnds until it is successful. Upn successful binding the state will transitin t apprunning and its sub-state will be allwing lw pwer as set by the flag applwpwrf in the variable appflags. Every 10-secnds, the device sets a tertiary state, that it is sending data, as set by the flag appsendingf in appflags. The device requests that the sinking device shuld acknwledge receipt f the data message OTA, s it retries sending the same data OTA up t 3 times every time that the SAPI feedback frm the CC2480 indicates that the message has nt been acknwledged. While awaiting the acknwledge, the device enters lw pwer and awakes every 2 secnds by a timer in rder t pll fr the SAPI feedback frm the CC2480. When the message is acknwledged r the retries have expired, the sub-state f sending data is cleared by clearing the appsendingf flag. Whenever a message is acknwledged, the device blinks the red LED nce. 17

20 6.3 ZASA Cnfiguratin and Cmpile Optins The ZASA includes cnfiguratin ptins that can be changed based n perfrmance requirements. Many cnfiguratin ptins are prvided but nt all are meant t be changed fr the ez430-rf2480 Dem Kit. The cnfiguratin ptins f interest fr ZASA are as fllws: HOST_PROFILE_ID The Prfile ID defines the ZigBee Prfile being used by the applicatin. In the case f ZASA we use a TI specific Prfile ID. 23 9 Frequently Asked Questins 1. I am getting incnsistent temperature readings reprted by ndes. Is there smething I need t d t make temperature readings mre accurate? The temperature sensr n the MSP430 needs t be calibrated in rder t prvide a crrect temperature. The sensr is nt calibrated in the factry, and it is left up t the user t perfrm this calibratin and stre the calibratin ffset smewhere in the infrmatin area f the MSP430. ZASA des read frm the infrmatin memry (at address 0x10F4) but will nly read FF if a value has nt been set by the user. 2. Why des the Crdinatr take a few secnds t setup a new netwrk? T keep things simple, ZASA was designed s that a single buttn press was used t first attempt t jin an existing netwrk, and if ne cannt be fund, t then initiate the frmatin f a new netwrk as the netwrk Crdinatr. Because a device first attempts t jin an existing netwrk, there is a nticeable lag in time during which the device is perfrming an active scan t discver any netwrk in range that meet the jining criteria. After determining that n netwrk exists, t start a netwrk as a Crdinatr the device must then als perfrm an active and passive scan. This entire prcess takes several secnds and creates a nticeable delay t the user. 3. Why des it take a few secnds fr the nde t jin r bind t the Crdinatr? T keep things simple, ZASA was designed t incrprate jining and binding int the netwrk startup prcedure. When triggered by ne r tw buttn presses (depending n the device type), a nde first must scan and perfrm a jin t an existing netwrk (assuming ne can be fund), and then must g thrugh a several step binding prcess which establishes a cnnectin between the Surce and Sink. This prcedure takes a few secnds t cmplete and can cause a nticeable delay t the user. 4. What kind f range shuld I expect t get with the ez430- RF2480 hardware? Based n practical range testing, using ZASA, with ne nde cnnected t a PC and the ther nde cnnected t the battery bard, we have measured indr line-f-sight range f mre than 35 meters.
