1 1. Firing and bmbing practices and defence exercises take place intermittently in a number f areas ff the cast f New Zealand. 2. In view f the respnsibilities f range authrities t avid accidents, limits f practice areas are nt shwn n New Zealand and British Admiralty charts, and descriptins f areas d nt appear in the Admiralty Sailing Directins fr New Zealand, New Zealand Pilt (NP 51). Diagrams f danger areas are included at the end f this Ntice. Aircraft fire at a large white r red sleeve r flag (which may be illuminated by a bright white light) twed by anther aircraft mving n a steady curse. Firing frm shre batteries r ships at fixed r flating targets. May be (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) r (g) abve. Warning signals are usually shwn. Firing takes place t seaward f land targets. All marine craft perating as range safety craft r targets will display, fr identificatin purpses, while in the vicinity f the danger area by day a large red flag at the masthead. Ships shw a red flag by day; a night signal is nt shwn. All such firings under Clear (Air and Sea) Range prcedure. Devices are generally incrprated whereby the missiles may be destryed shuld their flights be erratic. Ships shw a red flag by day; a night signal is nt shwn. Ntificatin f Practices 4. Warnings will nt be issued in respect f exercise areas D130, M103 and M306 as these areas are cnsidered t be in cntinual use. These areas are described in the fllwing pages. Fr the infrmatin f ships at sea, warnings f practices will be ntified by: (a) The bradcast f VHF and R/T (Radi-Telephny) messages which will be prmulgated during evening and mrning transmissin times befre any practice takes place. Fr times and frequencies f these transmissins, see New Zealand Annual Ntice t Mariners 9, pages ; (b) New Zealand Ntices t Mariners (NTMs), if practices are t be f lng duratin, i.e. seven days r mre; (c) Additinal warnings f Army live shell practices nly will be ntified by advertisement in a newspaper r newspapers within the prt cncerned nt less than twenty fur hurs befre a practice begins and by the reginal YA bradcast statin fr the prt cncerned nt less than twelve hurs befre any practice; (d) In additin t 4(a) fr all firings in the New Zealand area, whether in prescribed areas r nt, firing warnings are t be passed n R/T 2182 khz and VHF Channel 16, 5 minutes prir t the cmmencement f live firing, every 30 minutes thereafter, and immediately n cmpletin f firings. 2 Frm f Warning 5. In rder t prmulgate the danger areas, radi warnings will generally be in the fllwing frmat: Castal Navigatinal Warning N. 23 begins Weapns Practice Hauraki Gulf area Nvember 23 frm 1000 t 1400 NZDT/NZST Danger Area M109 ends. Nte: Warnings may be prmulgated in NTMs, see 4 (b) abve. Warning Signals Visual 6. These cnsist f a large red flag by day and a fixed red light at night. The absence f any such signal cannt, hwever, be accepted as evidence that a practice area des nt exist. Warning signals are shwn frm half an hur befre practice cmmences until it ceases. Ships and aircraft carrying ut night exercises may illuminate with white, green, r red flares. Cautin 7. The range authrities are respnsible fr ensuring that there shuld be n risk f damage frm falling shell splinters r bullets t any vessel that may be in a practice area. If a vessel is in an area where practice is in prgress, the vessel shuld maintain its curse and speed, but, if prevented frm ding s by the exigencies f navigatin, the vessel shuld endeavur t clear the area at the earliest pssible mment. Practices will nt nrmally take place while a vessel is in a danger area, but the areas must be cleared as sn as pssible after the warning has been shwn. Clear Range Prcedure 8. The fllwing limits are used by RNZAF crews engaged in drpping live weapns: (a) The drpping area is t be at least 30 nautical miles (15 miles*) frm the nearest land, utside the 100 metre line and at least 20 nautical miles (10 miles*) frm all shipping; (b) The visibility is t be ver 5 nautical miles and all attacks are t be made frm belw clud base. The target is t be visible at the time f the drp; (c) The area thrugh which and int which any weapns will pass r fall is t be clear f all air and sea traffic. *Limits used fr practice weapns Ordnance Brught t the Surface 9. Fishermen perating in the vicinity f firing practice and exercise areas may ccasinally bring unexplded missiles r prtins f them t the surface in their nets r trawls. These bjects may be dangerus and shuld be treated with great cautin and jettisned immediately (fixing the psitin, if pssible).
