1 Intrductin 1. Maritime Safety Infrmatin (MSI) is defined as navigatinal and meterlgical warnings, meterlgical frecasts, and ther urgent safety-related messages. This infrmatin is f vital imprtance t all vessels at sea. Nte that cmmunicatins related t search and rescue peratins such as distress alerts, crdinatin f peratins, lcal cmmunicatins and psitining signals are never MSI. Search and Rescue peratins may, hwever, invlve the bradcasting f MSI in the navigatinal warning categry, described in 3(f) belw. Navigatinal warnings are designed t give the mariner infrmatin relating t dangers and aids t navigatin and are primarily t assist mariners in navigatin up t the entrance f prts. Infrmatin f a less essential nature, and matters within a harbur entrance, which may frm the subject f a Ntice t Mariners r lcal harbur warnings, will nt nrmally be bradcast by cast radi statins. Such infrmatin is available frm harbur authrities, and all vessels are advised t cntact the harbur raditelephne statin befre entering the prt. Navigatinal warnings are bradcast fr as lng as the infrmatin is valid and shall remain in frce until cancelled by the riginating authrity. Types f Warnings 2. There are three types f navigatinal warnings: (a) Lng Range Navigatinal Warnings these warnings are part f the NAVAREA system f lng range navigatinal warnings cncerned with infrmatin which cean-ging mariners require fr their safe navigatin. This includes, in particular, new navigatinal hazards and failures t imprtant aids t navigatin as well as infrmatin which may require changes t planned navigatinal rutes. (b) (c) Castal Navigatinal Warnings these warnings prvide infrmatin which is necessary fr safe navigatin within areas seaward f the fairway buy r pilt statin, and shuld nt be restricted t main shipping rutes. Lcal Navigatinal Warnings these warnings are bradcast t supplement Castal Navigatinal Warnings by giving detailed infrmatin within inshre waters and ften within the limits f a harbur r prt authrity. These warnings are bradcast via the lcal harbur VHF radi and are ften made available by the prts and harburs n their websites. 3. Types f MSI (Jint IHO/IMO/WMO Manual n Maritime Safety Infrmatin, IHO Publicatin S-53, sectin ): (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) (j) (k) (l) Casualties t lights, fg signals, buys and ther aids t navigatin affecting main shipping lanes; The presence f dangerus wrecks in r near main shipping lanes and, if relevant, their marking; Establishment f majr new aids t navigatin r significant changes t existing nes when such establishment r change might be misleading t shipping; The presence f large unwieldy tws in cngested waters; Drifting hazards (including derelict ships, ice, mines, cntainers, ther large items ver 6 metres in length etc.); Areas where search and rescue (SAR) and anti-pllutin peratins are being carried ut (fr avidance f such areas); The presence f newly discvered rcks, shals, reefs and wrecks likely t cnstitute a danger t shipping and, if relevant, their marking; Unexpected alteratin r suspensin f established rutes; Cable r pipe laying activities, seismic surveys, the twing f large submerged bjects fr research r explratin purpses, the emplyment f manned r unmanned submersibles, r ther underwater peratins cnstituting ptential dangers in r near shipping lanes; The establishment f research r scientific instruments in r near shipping lanes; The establishment f ffshre structures in r near shipping lanes; Significant malfunctining f radi-navigatin services and shre-based maritime safety infrmatin radi r satellite services; (m) Infrmatin cncerning events which might affect the safety f shipping, smetimes ver wide areas, e.g. naval exercises, missile firings, space missins, nuclear tests, rdnance dumping znes, etc.; (n) () (p) Operating anmalies identified within Electrnic Chart Display Infrmatin Systems (ECDIS) including Electrnic Navigatinal Charts (ENC) issues; Acts f piracy and armed rbbery against ships; Tsunamis and ther natural phenmena, such as abnrmal changes t sea level; Authrities: Land Infrmatin New Zealand, Maritime New Zealand 234 ANNUAL NZ NOTICES TO MARINERS New Zealand Nautical Almanac

Lng Range Navigatinal Warnings (NAVAREA XIV Suthwest Pacific) Area Crdinatr 4. Under the Wrld Wide Navigatinal Warnings Service (WWNWS), New Zealand is the area crdinatr fr NAVAREA XIV see diagrams at the end f this Ntice fr extents. Warnings are prefixed NAVAREA XIV and numbered cnsecutively n an annual basis. Land Infrmatin New Zealand (LINZ) is the NAVAREA XIV Crdinatr, the authrity charged with cllecting and issuing lng range navigatinal warnings. Warnings are bradcast n receipt and repeated at scheduled bradcasts 0900 and 2100 UTC until cancelled. The Rescue Crdinatin Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is the natinal authrity charged with cllating and issuing castal warnings fr New Zealand. They are bradcast t the New Zealand Castal Warning Area Z. See Diagrams 1 and 2 illustrating New Zealand Castal Frecast Areas and the New Zealand Castal Warning Area respectively. Warnings are prefixed Castal Navigatin Warning and numbered cnsecutively n an annual basis. An in-frce bulletin f current Castal Navigatinal Warnings will be bradcast each Mnday at 0900 UTC via Inmarsat SafetyNET. When there are n Castal Navigatinal Warnings t be disseminated at the scheduled bradcast time, a message will be issued advising f this. Many warnings are f a temprary nature, but thers may remain in frce fr several weeks and may be superseded by NTMs. The mre imprtant castal navigatin warnings, such as the failure f landfall lights, may be repeated and cntinued t be bradcast as NAVAREA XIV Warnings. Castal Navigatinal Warnings will nt cntain meterlgical infrmatin such as frecasts f gales, strms, cyclnes r trpical revlving strms. Meterlgical infrmatin is bradcast at scheduled times. 8. Castal R/T Bradcasts by Taup Maritime Radi Nte: the times shwn belw are the time f cmmencement f the transmissins. Maritime Safety Infrmatin (MSI) is transmitted by Taup Maritime Radi (ZLM) n receipt f the message frm Maritime New Zealand at the end f the next silence perid after receipt and at: 0133, 0533, 1333 and 1733 New Zealand Standard Time (NZST) r New Zealand Daylight Time (NZDT). An initial call will be made n the calling frequencies 2182, 4125 and 6215 khz. Warnings will then be bradcast n the wrking frequencies 2207, 4146 and 6224 khz. Masters are recmmended t arrange, whenever pssible, fr a radi peratr r an fficer t listen at the scheduled time befre sailing at which this infrmatin is bradcast, in case any dangers affecting their rutes are ntified. A warning will be repeated n request by a ship t ZLM. Operatrs shuld, hwever, make every effrt t get these warnings at the scheduled hurs f transmissin. Nrmally warnings will be bradcast at rutine times fr as lng as may be deemed necessary. Vessels fitted with R/T are requested nt t make rutine transmissins 2182, 4125 r 6215 khz during the perids referred t in the schedule f R/T bradcasts. 9. Castal VHF Bradcasts by Taup Maritime Radi (ZLM) Maritime Safety Infrmatin (MSI) is transmitted by Maritime Radi VHF statins lcated arund the New Zealand cast at these times: New Zealand Castal Areas * NZST r NZDT Chatham Islands Chatham Islands time (45 minutes ahead f NZST r NZDT) Bradcasts will include navigatinal and meterlgical warnings, the situatin and frecast fr all New Zealand sea areas, and Castal Reprts fr Shipping. The *1033 bradcast will include all warnings in frce and the castal reprts as at 0900 NZST r NZDT (i.e. n situatin r frecast infrmatin). Transmissins will be made simultaneusly, but separately, fr the Nrth and Suth Islands n the wrking channels fllwing a bradcast annuncement call n VHF Channel 16. Vessels must then ensure they select the apprpriate wrking channel based n their lcatin at the time see paragraph 5 f Annual New Zealand Ntice t Mariners, N. 10. Castal Navigatinal Warnings will be bradcast n all statins with the area f interest indicated by the sea area as a prefix.
