FRINGE 2005 Workshop Envisat and ERS missions: and services Henri LAUR Envisat Mission Manager
Our top objective: ease access to Earth Observation Common objective for all missions handled by ESA: Envisat, ERS, Earth Explorers, and third party missions (e.g. ALOS, SPOT-4, CHRIS-PROBA, ) Simplified application procedure for Category 1 use Multimission catalogue, multimission user tools Gradual implementation of Internet access to : Near Real Time and archived
How How to to apply apply for for access within within a Category Category 1 use use framework framework Application for Category 1 use access can be submitted to ESA at any time using ESA Earth Observation Principal Investigator portal When When requested requested is is systematically systematically available available on on ESA ESA Internet Internet servers servers (e.g. (e.g. MERIS MERIS Reduced Reduced Resolution) Resolution) : : Registration Registration (i.e. (i.e. a a simplified simplified proposal) proposal) When When requested requested is is related related to to specific specific acquisition acquisition or or dissemination dissemination constraints constraints (e.g. (e.g. ASAR ASAR High High Rate Rate ) ) : : Project Project proposal proposal The The proposal proposal is is submitted submitted to to a a peer peer review review process process [average [average 8 8 weeks weeks before before acceptance acceptance notification] notification] Terms Terms and and conditions: conditions: to to use use provided provided for for Category Category 1 1 use use only only within within project project team team (i.e. (i.e. PI PI and and co-pis) co-pis) and and only only for for purpose purpose described described in in project project proposal, proposal, to to widely widely publish publish project project results results in in scientific scientific publications publications or or presentations presentations (with (with citation: citation: [mission [mission or or instrument] instrument] Data Data provided provided by by European European Space Space Agency ). Agency ).
Data catalogues A single catalogue for all EO missions handled by ESA ERS SAR Envisat ASAR Image Mode Catalogue collection for period 1 st to 7 th November 2005 Envisat ASAR Wide Swath Mode
Data catalogues Envisat ASAR : Wide Swath Mode Arctic Most Most of of acquired acquired thanks thanks to to ASAR ASAR Background Background Regional Regional Mission Mission Antarctica since mid-2002, all polarisations
Data catalogues The ASAR Background Regional Mission Defines planning of ASAR when re is no specific user acquisition request Emergency High priority Cat. 2 Category 1 Archive built by specific user acquisition requests Data acquisition 25% confirmed to users Acquisition priorities defined by High Level Operation Plan Low priority Background Regional Mission (BRM) (implemented with aim to minimize conflicts with existing user requests) Archive built by BRM 75% Data acquisition NOT confirmed to any user group ENVISAT ASAR archive
Data catalogues Envisat ASAR : Image Mode glacier tectonics subsidence volcanoes More More than than % of of IM IM are are in in ERS-like ERS-like mode mode (Swath (Swath 2, 2, VV) VV) FRINGE 03 recommendation to acquire more IM for motion analysis implemented. FRINGE 03 recommendation to acquire more in IM mode over volcanoes implemented. since mid-2002, all swaths, all polarisations FRINGE 03 recommendation to acquire IM over Greenland implemented. Over Antarctica, WS acquisitions.

Data catalogues ERS SAR : Tandem ERS-1/ERS-2 ERS SAR tandem : a unique set! 30 m < baseline < 100 m Nb of couples m < baseline < 200 m 73% of tandem meet optimal baseline requirements for DEM generation of 50 to 300 m
EOLI: ESA multimission EO catalogue EOLI Stand Alone (EOLI-SA) both an on-line and off-line multimission EO catalogue on-line ordering a copy of on-line inventory can be downloaded for off-line work visualisation of quick-looks Version 3.3 available at
EOLI: ESA multimission EO catalogue EOLI Stand Alone (EOLI-SA) Interferometric search Current EOLI-SA version (3.3) supports Envisat ASAR interferometric search (using local inventory): - with baseline criteria - for all valid combinations between IM, WS and AP modes Version 3.3 available at
EOLI: ESA multimission EO catalogue EOLI Stand Alone (EOLI-SA) Interferometric search 4.1 Future EOLI-SA version (4.1, expected in Spring 2006) will support both ERS and Envisat interferometric search (using local inventory): - for all valid combinations between ASAR IM, WS and AP modes, - for all valid combinations between ERS-1 and ERS-2 (depending on orbital phases), - for all valid combinations between Envisat/ASAR and ERS/SAR (cross satellite interferometry), - with baseline criteria, and later, with Doppler centroid criteria (for ERS) and burst synchronisation criteria (for ASAR Wide Swath). Version 4.1 will be available at EOLI-SA demo during workshop with EO Help Desk (outside this room)
Catalogues Catalogues interfaces interfaces Alternative search tools for ERS 1- ERS interferometric search with specific on-line EOLI interface, using outputs of Interferometric Quick Look (tandem mission) FRINGE 03 FRINGE 03 recommendation recommendation to to provide provide info info about about baseline: baseline: implemented implemented 2- Interferometric search with specific off-line DESCW tool 3- ERS baseline listing 4- Doppler Frequency for ERS-2 Zero-Gyro-Mode baseline/baseline.html pcs/ers/sar/doppler
SAR products distribution Archived Archived availability period coverage Envisat ASAR On request Whole mission since 2002 Worldwide coverage ERS-1/2 SAR (CD-Rom or DVD-Rom) Whole mission since 1991 Within ERS station masks FTP distribution service for archived will be implemented gradually from 2006 onwards, priority to emergency and Cat.2 requests Near Real Time Internet NRT availability period coverage Envisat ASAR Systematic Medium Resolution (75 m) [e.g. Wide Swath Mode image] Global Monitoring (1000 m) (i.e. processing of all ) Product available 3 hours after acquisition Rolling archive of last 7days Worldwide coverage Envisat ASAR Full Resolution (12.5 m) [e.g. IMS, APS] On request (i.e. limited number, priority to emergency and Cat.2 requests) Few hours after acq. Worldwide coverage ERS-2 SAR Full Resolution (12.5 m) On request (i.e. limited number) Few hours after acq. Sourn Europe (Matera mask)
ALOS access at ESA ESA is responsible for distribution to all PIs in Europe/Africa (ADEN) zone. ADEN ALOS distribution is similar to Envisat/ERS distribution, i.e.: Cat.1 projects served directly by ESA, Cat.2 use served via commercial distributor ADEN ESA ALOS AO is currently open: ESA will receive from JAXA all off-line acquired over ADEN zone for archiving and distribution. In addition, ESA is currently planning to have additional NRT acquisition stations, primarily to cover Europe, but tentatively also to cover Africa; this will depend on user needs (AO, etc.).
SAR Toolbox: BEST BEST is a collection of software tools which has been developed to help remote sensing community to exploit ESA SAR Data Import and Quick Look Tools Data Export Tools Data Conversion Tools Statistical Tools Resampling Tools Co-registration Tools and Support for Interferometry Coherence image generation Baseline calculation, altitude of ambiguity, sensitivity vector Geometric correction of ASAR medium resolution imagery Speckle Filtering Calibration Tools Backscattering Coefficient Image generation ASAR retro-calibration ASAR Wide Swath imagery enhancement Version available at
