ESA Sensor Performance, Products and Algorithms Bojan R. Bojkov Head, Sensor Performance, Products and Algorithms Ground Segment and Mission Operations Department ESRIN, Frascati, Italy
ESA EO missions ERS-2 Envisat Extension Extension deorbiting Funding to be decided by ESA Ministerial Council (as part of EOEP-4) GOCE Extension SMOS CryoSat SWARM ADM-Aeolus EarthCARE Sentinel-1A, -1B Sentinel-2A, -2B Sentinel-3A, -3B Sentinel-5P
ESA s interest in calibrations Key words are Characterization, Interoperability and Documentation, applied to: Past missions Reprocessing, Climate Change Initiative (CCI), Long-Term Data Preservation (LTDB) Current missions best practise sensor performance monitoring, interoperability (increasing NRT requirements), product evolutions Future missions Use of accepted prelaunch methodologies (and all the above)
Envisat data gap: Sentinel characterisation L1 characterisation/intercomparisons alone are not sufficient to characterise sensors and products, especially during initial satellite operations
MERIS water leaving radiances assessment using BOUSSOLE/MOBY/NOMAD Reprocessing 2 (top), reprocessing 3 (bottom)
MERIS stray light Stray-light remains a serious issue with MERIS in col. 3 as demonstrated by Lindstrot et al. (2010) for cloud top height retrievals (rigorously validated using FBU aircraft measurements).
AATSR Long-term geophysical validation essential for data credibility and reliability
AATSR Sea Surface Temperature derived from several EO missions (ESA Medspiration project)
Altimetry Recent Envisat result based on latest Envisat altimetry reprocessing and on an updated Point Target Response (PTR) correction. Global mean sea level rise
How does SPPA work? Mission Feedback Science community input Comparison with independent products Evolution of protocols (QA4EO) Feedback Satellite Data from Calibrated Sensors Calibration Strategy Pre-launch (Phase A-D) Satellite Commissioning S (Phase E1) Operations (Phase E2) Postla Post-Operations (Phase F) S L Improved Products and Algorithms Reprocessing resulting from improved calibration and algorithms Interface to collaborative algorithms c SPPA (with ESLs and QWGs) M c In-Situ Data Collection of data against welldefined requirements Inter-calibration of in-situ systems Data collection following community accepted protocols (QA4EO) Maintenance of Cal/Val information and data portals Tools Cal/Val tools Diagnostic data-sets (DDS) Algorithm breadboards Radiative Transfer Models Product and Algorithm Validation Algorithm development and Validation Operational QC on products Match-up, long-loop evaluation, Satellite-Satellite
ESA and GSICS To meet characterization, interoperability and documentation requirements/commitments, ESA is very interested in continued involvement with GSICS by: Actively participating in and contributing to the GSICS working groups Applying/following GSICS developed calibration inter-calibration best practises both for past, current and future missions but ESA, at this time, will remain an observer in GSICS: ESA is a R/D organisation, with international interfacing (primarily) through CEOS Participation/status in GSICS in process of being reviewed, with a final decision later this year
Thank you!
Some words on Envisat
ENVISAT mission: 10 years Iceland 2010 Arctic 2007 Ozone hole 2005 L Aquila 2009 Japan 2011 Launch Global air pollution Prestige tanker oil slick B-15A iceberg Bam earthquake Hurricane Katrina Chlorophyll concentration CO2 map serving 4000 scientific projects and many operational users Mar 02 Sep 04 Envisat Symposium Salzburg (A) Apr 07 Envisat Symposium Montreux (CH) Living Planet Symposium Bergen (N) Jun 10 and many workshops dedicated to specific Envisat user communities (e.g. Fringe, MERIS, Atm. Conference, etc ) Apr 12
Envisat: 10 years of good performances Envisat satellite celebrated its 10 th year in orbit on 1 st March 2012 Envisat satellite nominal lifetime was 5 years Overall good performances until 8 th April 2012 Last MERIS image before anomaly (8 April 2012, 11:05 UTC) Last ASAR image before anomaly (8 April 2012, 11:09 UTC)
External observations & Analysis External observations from on-ground radar (Fraunhofer TIRA), Pleiades satellite and laser ranging stations: 1. No visible damage to Solar Array or to the main body No debris collision 2. Solar Array close to anti-canonical position Safe Mode not triggered or uncompleted Electronic Decoder and Reconfiguration suspect of not working (power?) 3. Satellite slowly rotating around two axis (~once per orbit?) Attitude Control System or Safe Mode Attitude Control not operational Coherent with satellite geometry Fraunhofer TIRA image (10 April 2012) Credits CNES Pleiades images (15 April 2012) Credits CNES
Envisat Failure Scenarios Based on the anomaly events on 8 th April and on the external observations since then, up to 9 possible scenarios have been devised, but two scenarios are considered as the most probable: Failure Scenario 1: Double failure in the Power Subsystem 1. Non-observable double failure in the Power Regulators Failure Scenario 2: Double failure in Central Communication Unit + Safe Mode Failure 1. Non-observable double failure in the Telecommand Coupler 2. then, Safe Mode failure
