5 Support European EO Service Industry to grow use of EO-based information mainly with private-sector users. New EO Services (20 activities): Novel developments in EO services, New European & Canadian national missions (TerraSar-X, CosmoSkyMed, RadarSat-2, Deimos-1, DMC, RapidEye) New Markets (16 activities): 51 service suppliers, 57 users (75% private sector), Waste management, Geo-marketing, Tourism, Media, Agro-chemical, Insurance,. Export Markets (4 activities): Investigating new prospects outside EU, China, SE Asia, N. Africa, Persian Gulf. ESA EO Value-Adding Element

7 Oil Industry : Environmental Impact 2005 Unbiased, timed satellite images help building stakeholder trust because they clearly illustrate the activities taking place in our oil sands mine leases; they present clear, accessible visuals to stakeholders such as First Nations people who live in the area; they provide objective information on development and eventual reclamation of our oil sands leases and help us to expand our annual reporting on environmental performance, including future reclamation areas. Using 2006 as a baseline, we intend to repeat monitoring by satellite on a yearly basis, to record our mine development and our progressive reclamation of involved areas. 13 Some Messages A large number of satellites with a wide range of capabilities (and constraints) is becoming available, Long-term continuity of these sources and types of information is assured, Europe has an innovative industry specialised in provision of EO-based information services, EO is moving from an R&D technology to a basis for provision of operational geo-information services, Europe is in a leading position, GMES will be a major step forward (next 5 years)

14 This Workshop This Workshop - an opportunity To inform Oil & Gas sector of (some) EO Service capabilities, To understand better the information requirements (current & future) within the Oil & Gas sector, To decide what (if any) future actions are required (by all parties) to grow & expand the use of EO information. Your contribution is essential

15 Some Questions Current use of EO : What works?, how is it is used?, how widely? Current information requirements : What is needed but is not being delivered? (now and in the near future), Longer-term perspectives : What is happening in the Industry leading to new information requirements? What types? When? How to work together : Establishment of best practises or industrial guidelines for use of EO based services? R&D via Joint Industry Working Group?
