3 Recall - ESA Technology Strategy drivers Cost: Schedule: how to substantially reduce the cost of space products to maintain industrial competitiveness and do more in institutional missions; Innovation: Capturing and maturing new ideas into competitive products. The ESA-TEC innovation chain from Advanced Concepts to flight demonstration plays a key role in delivering innovation and growth; schedule is a key factor in terms of competitiveness. This calls for infusion of production technologies from other domains, but also faster cycle time in Institutional processes. Sustainability: ESA is committed to maintaining the highest environmental standards for European citizens. On the ground, and in space. 9 Space Technology Coordination and Harmonisation Acknowledged need to coordinate, harmonise and share information to ensure complementarity, promote synergies and avoid unnecessary duplication This coordination can happen at various levels (Roadmap, Workplan, individual activity/project/assessment) Some well established processes in place for Mapping/Roadmapping: Technology Harmonisation since 2001, with EC participation since Strengthened participation being discussed. 10 Synergies with other sectors Spin-in from terrestrial sectors (ICT, Energy, ) occurs naturally in some areas as part of the normal space technology development process (e.g microprocessors, batteries, ) Looking at synergies with other sectors (e.g. Energy) means also finding benefits for other sectors Sustainability of many supply chains for space depends heavily on other sectors Use of COTS being looked at more and more, in particular for commercial applications Processes and practices of other sectors are being adopted by the Space industry (ALM, Design to Produce,..) Promote synergies between space and other sectors through specific actions in H2020 with the aim to mainstream space in EU policies and initiatives. 11 Implementation/Funding Instruments Across the variety of programmes in Europe addressing technology there are different types of funding instruments, e.g. Open Calls Procurement / ITT Prizes each with suitability for certain types of activity, depending on, e.g.: TRL Area of application (Science, Telecom, ) Funding approach (e.g. full vs co-funding) Requirements/Restrictions in terms of participation, return Make the best use of funding by ensuring compatibility of topics and associated funding instruments. e.g. Open Calls suit well Low TRL activities ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 27/09/2016 Slide 11

12 General Suggestions for Space Technologies H2020 may focus on areas complementary to ESA, where there is a broad strategic value for EU and that fit with the specific funding mechanisms and rules of participation Harmonisation Roadmaps can support the identification of specific activities Continue funding of Technologies identified by the JTF on Critical Space Technologies and the 2 PSAs on Electric Propulsion and Robotics technologies European Space Components (Low TRL in Open Calls, Higher TRL (component evaluation and qualification) requires other instruments). Ensuring unrestricted supply chain for the critical components such as ASIC, FPGA, GaN devices. 13 General Suggestions for Space Technologies Fostering cross-fertilisation and targeting technologies which have a wider use - not only for space applications. One promising area could be Space and Energy sector synergies which would identify and exploit cross-sectorial synergies by bringing together complementary skills, knowledge, and resources in novel ways. Another example is for critical software (rail, aeronautics, ) Supporting SME s with their long term technology developments, particularly in countries without a strong space industry Green alternatives, which would support the Space sector in dealing with the impacts of EU regulations, such as REACH, which have implications beyond ensuring a high level of protection of human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals. 14 Suggestions on specific areas EARTH OBSERVATION Concept: innovate for competitiveness and to enable new capabilities in multi-pronged effort (support future commercial and institutional EO) with special attention to small satellite technologies (and SME) applications of disruptive technologies to EO sensors, e.g. GaN for radars in K-bands, alexandrite lasers for lidars technologies for distributed EO systems especially with small satellites platform technologies for very-high-resolution optical and radar imaging from unconventional orbits (very low altitude, highly elliptic, geo-synchronous,..), especially for small satellites detectors and focal plane systems for small satellites high-performance interferometric aperture systems (radar, optical) automated ground systems for large EO constellations ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 27/09/2016 Slide 14

15 Suggestions on specific areas SATCOM: Recognising the catalysts for change in Satcom including 5G, Megaconstellations, and security considerations, additional support for new technology developments or adaptations of non-space technologies would be welcomed. Particular attention could be paid to breakthrough technologies in the areas of: Optical communications Satellite relay networks, such as next generation EDRS, GovSatcom GROUND SEGMENT AND OPERATIONS: Optical Communications: large aperture ground antenna for deep space New communication radio-frequency bands: ground antenna feed systems Advanced operations concepts: for complex / mega satellite constellation Model based systems engineering: model based driven diagnosis Big data: data analytics Advanced Visualization: Virtual reality, Augmented reality ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 27/09/2016 Slide 15
