1 EARTH OBSERVATION WITH SMALL SATELLITES AT THE FUCHS-GRUPPE B. Penné, C. Tobehn, M. Kassebom, H. Lübberstedt OHB-System GmbH, Universitätsallee 27-29, D Bremen, Germany ABSTRACT This paper covers the actual status of the FUCHS-GRUPPE activities in the field of Earth Observation with small satellites. The following main activities & results are described: DIAMANT / MSRS, a small satellite system for high resolution multispectral remote sensing. Results of the currently finalized sensor Phase B are presented. The recently started MSC project deals with a multispectral camera on the Korean KOMPSAT II, where OHB provides elements for the Data Link System. FOCUS features an innovative infrared sensor system for the detection of hightemperature events. Results of the currently finalized Phase A Extension are presented. FUCHS-GRUPPE technology range covers high resolution imaging in infrared, multispectral, LIDAR and SAR and aims into commercialisation of EO products. 1 EARTH OBSERVATION AT THE FUCHS-GRUPPE OHB-System - a member of the FUCHS-GRUPPE - initiated in 1995 an Earth Observation program, targeting at the commercial promising market for remote sensing activities. Hereby feasibility studies were performed and complementary partners were addressed. All these technologies are developed especially for small satellite usage for low cost commercialisation. Further activities on the marketing and

2 commercialisation of applications of such observation instruments are started in the newly founded FUCHS-GRUPPE member TELEMONDO. 2 DIAMANT/ MSRS DIAMANT is a small satellite system for high resolution remote sensing. It is designed to meet the specific requirements of today s and tomorrow s Earth observation users in wide range of applications. The currently running sensor development is a joint German- Israeli co-operative project financed by the EC. The DIAMANT/ MSRS main features are 12 spectral bands (VIS/NIR, nm bandwidth), 5m spatial resolution (26 km swath) and 3 days revisit time (1 satellite). A constellation of 3 satellites will reduce the revisit time to one day. 3 3 MSC The MSC overall project aims into the development, test and integration of a Multi Spectral Camera (MSC). MSC is going to be the primary payload for the KOMPSAT II satellite mission, a sunsynchronous Earth observation satellite of about 700kg. MSC itself comprises all elements to form a standalone payload, being beside the optical unit, the data storage and the X-band downlink. OHB-System is providing elements for the Data Link System (DLS), being the Channel Coding Unit (CCU) and the Antenna Switch Unit (ASU). OHB-System performs the DLS integration and test prior delivery to the customer. MSC Optical Unit (OU) Data Compression and Storage Unit (DCSU) Data Link System (DLS) Channel Coding Unit (CCU) Main: Redundant: Encryption Encryption 233/ /255 CCSDS CCSDS Transmitter (QTx) Transmitter (QTx) Antenna Switch Unit (ASU) Antenna Unit (AU) MSC_System_Top_Level_Overview_1a_ vsd, Power Supply Unit (PSU) Payload Management Unit (PMU) Tasks: OHB Other 4 FOCUS FOCUS is an intelligent infrared sensor system for autonomous on-board detection and for classification of High Temperature Events to be operated on the International Space Station. The FOCUS Multisensor Instrument will consist mainly of a wide-angle Fore Field for autonomous hot spot detection, a Main for detailed observation and analysis of selected high temperature phenomena (see Figure 4-1). The project schedule is aiming in the FOCUS launch with Utilisation Flight 3 in the 3 rd quarter of 2004, continued with 18 month in-orbit operations and 6 month post mission.

4 Figure 4-1: FOCUS System Overview 5 SBL The main objectives of SBL (SpaceBorne wind sounder LIDAR) are the global measurement of wind profile velocities, by measuring its Doppler Direction shifted reflection from the various atmospheric of Velocity layers. This represents a unique way to map the three dimensional wind field around the globe, which are important information for climate research and weather forecasting agencies and commercial airlines. The approach is the implementation of an advanced, long lifetime LIDAR on a small satellite Ground Swath platform. The LIDAR is based on existing, ground-approved LASER technology (diode pumped, solid state). This concept results in low weight and low power consuming system with an expected horizontal resolution ca. 100 km at an accuracy of about 1-3 m/s. Scan Pattern Rotation around Nadir 6 UNISAT The objective of the UNISAT project is the development of a small, commercial and

5 multipurpose satellite platform especially for the growing earth observation market demands. A Phase A Study was performed as German-Russian Co-operation. The generic and specific EO payload requirements were identified and their impact on the satellite bus design were analysed.
