1 Fall Classes & Workshops for Children, Teens and Adults All classes held at Northville Art House, 215 W. 2 2 Classes for Kids (ages 3-1/2-12) Creative Art Exploration (ages 3 1/2-6) Explore creative thinking and expression using paper, paint, clay and more! Projects designed to develop fine motor skills and enhance creative development. Creative Kids--Watercolor (ages 10-15) This course is designed to introduce the excitement and beauty of watercolor to children. Students will learn about watercolor paper, tools, paints and techniques. Watercolor skills taught in the class will be used to create several new and completed projects. Drawing skills are helpful but not necessary. Creative Kids Amazing Acrylics (ages 10-15) Explore color blending, brush strokes and more. Learn the various fun ways acrylic paint can be used. We will paint a variety of two and three-dimensional subjects. Kids Drawing (ages 6-9) Have fun with drawing a variety of scenes each week while learning about shapes, shading, color, perspective, composition and more! Drawings completed in colored pencil, oil pastel and marker. Exploring Art: Dale Chihuly (Ages 8-13) Dale Chihuly is known for his glass installations, from grand ballrooms to gardens; Chihuly glass is a whimsical and beautiful art form that combines architecture and nature. In this class students will learn about the artist, his techniques, inspiration and background while recreating some of his classic glass designs using mixed media. 3 3 Mixed Media (Ages 9-12) Students will mix materials in different combinations including: paper, paint, fabric, oil pastels, ink, gold foil and melted wax. Learn to experiment with new materials and techniques including image transfers, shaving cream prints, and painting with melted wax. Fashion Design Star! (Ages 6-9) Have you ever dreamed of showing at Fashion Week? Love to create new and unique clothing designs? Learn how to make a whole collection of your own! Students will create their own patterned fabric and incorporate the fabric into a collection of fashion designs. Fairy Door Workshop (Ages 5-12) Make your own fairy door to take home in this three day workshop. Amber Valentine will teach you how to get creative with found objects in nature and use paints and glue to help you create and finish your own fairy door just like the ones in Downtown Northville! Exploring Ceramics (Ages 7-11) Learn clay hand building techniques in this 3 week class including slab building, pinching and carving. Finish off our creations with texture and colorful glazes. Creative Kids -- Draw What You See (ages years) This class is designed to teach children to work in a studio setting drawing from seen objects. New drawing materials, papers, techniques, vocabulary and perspective will be introduced. Children will help create the still lives in the studio to teach them composition and design. All levels of drawing are welcome. 4 4 Paper Mache (Ages 7-12) Come explore 3D art! Using the power of your imagination, the instructor will help you create a unique piece of handmade art that will bring whimsy and life to your household. Create a fantastical beast or a realistic pet that you can paint, decorate with household objects, and take home! Handmade Collages (Ages 9-15) Turn the ordinary into the extraordinary using vintage magazines, old books, and photographs in this two day collage making workshop. Creative Jewelry Making (Ages 9-12) Make one of a kind bracelets and necklaces using wire, leather, stretch cord with glass, acrylic, and semi-precious stone beads. Each student will also make their own beads and pendants out of clay. Tie Dye and Fabric Design Workshop (Ages 9-12) Create wearable art! In this 2 day class students will tie-dye a t-shirt and fabric. On day 2 they will add to their colorful designs using fabric paint, stamps and foam rollers. Paper Mache Animals (Ages 5-10) Learn the steps to making beautiful, lifelike, paper mache animals. You choose the animal and bring it to life with paint, feathers, leather, and other 3D objects. Learn about animals and their environments while making your own exotic creature. 5 5 Creative Kids--2nd Saturdays (ages 5-12 years) The joy of creative thinking and self-expression are brought to life in this popular once-a-month class. Learn art history while creating projects via drawing, painting, sculpture and mixedmedia. Scheduled activities are offered in conjunction with the current professional exhibit on display in the Art House Gallery. Instructors: Staff Saturdays: 10:30-12:00 noon, September 12, October 10 (Register for each class separately one week in advance of class!) Art for All Ages -- An Adult and Youth Class (ages 6-12) Bring your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, neighbor, or friend and share in the creation of a masterpiece! Workshops are for one adult with one or two children. Share the experience of working on an art project together. Each class will be unique so attend more than once! Tween and Teen 2 nd Friday Night Creative Art Studio (ages years) Enjoy an evening the second Friday of the month and do something creative in this Make-It and Take-It studio. All levels are welcome in this relaxed atmosphere. Bring a friend and join the fun! Instructor: Amber Valentine Second Fridays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. September 11 - Dye and Embellish Your Own Article of Clothing. Bring your own piece of clothing and learn how to get creative with tye dye, jewels, gems, studs, stencils, and more! Using the power of your own creativity and a few simple supplies, a boring neutral article of clothing can be turned into a one of a kind wearable work of art! October 9 - DIY Spooky Luminaries. Turn an ordinary glass jar into a seasonal, spooky luminary using common objects like paper, glue and your imagination! Turn your glass into everything from vibrant, orange pumpkins or nuts-and-bolts Frankenstein monsters and perhaps even creatures from the Black Lagoon! November 13 - Wreath of Thankfulness. This Thanksgiving, let your loved ones know what you're thankful for with a wreath of thankfulness. Write all of your blessings on autumn leaves and unlock your inner floral designer as you use fall decor to create a beautiful wreath that you and your family can treasure for years to come. December 11 - DIY Winter snow globe. Keep the magic of the Winter holiday season in your home and heart year 'round with snow that won't melt! The instructor will help you use simple items like glass jars, glitter, and charming holiday decor like mini evergreens and deer to help you create a snow globe that will remind you of the perfect holiday season! 6 6 Classes for Teens and Adults Adult Beginning Watercolor Learn the basic techniques and more with this beautiful medium! Drawing skills are helpful but not necessary. Instruction on materials, application, color, value and special effects. Materials to be discussed with students on first day of class.) Beginning Drawing-with Jennifer Helner Explore the adventure of drawing. Expand on simple shapes and techniques to explore perspective, shading, texture, values, composition and more. The class will use pencil, charcoal, ebony, colored pencils, pens and much more. New and different papers will be used to further your creativity. All three sessions are ongoing with new mediums and techniques introduced with each session. Suggested supply list is also available.) Continuing Watercolor This class is for those who have already taken a watercolor class and are interested in improving their skills. Demos done by instructor to address handling whites, composition, color theory, values and negative painting. Students will also bring their own projects to work on and complete. Continuing and Beginning Pastel Pastels are an amazing medium that are gaining popularity today due to the beautiful results, hassle free set up and clean up and reasonable cost which is a big plus in today's busy world. This class is designed for beginners as well as more experienced students. The student will gain knowledge and experience in many areas of an art education such as: color theory, art elements, principles of art as well as self development of one's own unique style. An enrichment segment will discuss famous artist lives and work each week to help broaden the students knowledge of art history and how it is reverent in our life's today. This class provides a relaxed atmosphere where creativity and comfortable learning are the teachers goal in helping each student learn at his/her pace. 7 7 Acrylic Painting Exploration For beginners to some experience with acrylic paint. Various techniques and exploration of a few mediums will be used on small canvas board, then students will work on two to three projects of their own choosing using what they have learned. Covers different papers and drawing materials.) Beginning Watercolor with Jennifer Helner This class is for those who have little or no experience with watercolor. The class will help students become comfortable with watercolor painting techniques and enjoy the process of painting. Learn the basics of materials, tools, techniques, colors, values and seeing. Enjoy a fun, inspirational and relaxing two hours exploring the beauty of this medium. Suggested supply list also available.) Calligraphy Traditional Italic is a beautiful calligraphic hand that can be used for many hand lettered applications and projects. This class is designed for beginning and intermediate students in calligraphy, with a step-by-step approach, but is also well-suited for anyone who wants to brush up on their Italic. Calligraphy projects will be encouraged to take your work to a new level. Suggested supply list also available.) Experiments with 35mm Photography In this class, you will learn how creative the analog format can allow you to be using 35mm cameras and film. Amber Valentine will teach experimental techniques that turn photography into an even more fun, experimental art form. Push the boundaries in this instructional and informative class. 8 8 Acylics101 Have you ever wondered how an artist develops a painting? Or how they translate their creative talent onto canvas? Have you ever felt a desire to learn to paint but fear you have little understanding or talent when it comes to painting? Everyone has talent it just needs to be developed. Acrylics 101 is a class designed for the student who has little or no knowledge in painting but has a desire to learn. Foundation principles and knowledge acquired in this beginners class are taught emphasized with the FUN factor and are the building blocks of Acrylics101. It's a great place to start with a promise of great things to come. Instructor: Kathy Ruffini-Piccone Friday 10 a.m. - noon (Sep 18 Oct 23; Oct 30 Dec 11) (M)$108; (NM)$120 Creative Analog Photography for Adults and Young Adults Dust off your old camera and re-familiarize yourself with 35mm photography! In this class, Amber Valentine will teach you interesting and fun techniques that will make you fall in love with film again. Some experience preferable. All students must have their own camera. Film will be provided. Traditional Oil Painting The basics of traditional oil painting - In this class we will be painting a still life painting. Learn how to choose paints, brushes and canvases and how to develop strong concepts and build creative skills. How to begin by blocking in, build layers and finishing details. If you have always wanted to learn oil painting but have never even picked up a brush this class is for you. Simple, easy and fun. Instructor provides all the supplies for you to use in class. This is a great opportunity for those not quite sure if this is something they would enjoy learning about. Hope you will join in! 9 9 Intermediate Level Acrylic Painting Please join in and explore painting using the versatile medium of acrylics. This class is for the intermediate painter. Build stronger paintings, more focus on techniques and improving creative practices. Every student gets individual attention in a learner-centered based approached. Instructor: Kim Ensch Thursdays 1:00 4:00 p.m. (Oct. 29 Dec. 10) (M)$135; (NM)$150 Resin Casting for Beginners (Ages 13+) The art of casting found treasures in plastic has been around for centuries, piquing in popularity in the 1960's with bake-lite jewelry. The instructor will teach you how to cast your tiny treasures in plastic so you can wear them as jewelry or use them as paper weights and desk adornments for years to come. Resin is permanent, so you can hand it down for generations and generations, truly treasuring it forever. Photoshop for Beginners Learn basic Photoshop and begin to understand this powerful yet simple art/design computer application. This Photoshop 101 class will get you started using basic tools, filters, layers and color correction techniques that are simple to complete and easy to remember. This class is for anyone who wants to start small and slow, but end up creatively advanced in basic Photoshop techniques. Instructor: Robert Gorczyca - Senior Production Artist for Hour Media Students must have their own laptop to work from. The Art House does not provide Photoshop; Adobe Photoshop is available for purchase on a monthly basis ($19.99/Month) and must be purchased for use in class. Tuesday 7-9 p.m. (Sep 15 Oct 20; Oct 27 Dec 8) Class held in the upper gallery. (M)$135; (NM)$150 Beginner Adobe After Effects In this class, students will be introduced to the default interface of After Effects, importing and exporting media, basic composition and pre-composition set up and options, text animation, animation using layered effects, camera movements, and basic expressions. Instructor: Ashton Kuehn Students must have their own laptop to work from. The Art House does not provide After Effects; Adobe After Effects is available for purchase on a monthly basis from Adobe and must be purchased for use in class. 10 10 Try-It Series If you ever wanted to explore a different medium, this is your chance! All levels are welcome. Come for one or try them all! Workshops Introduction to Zentangle (Adult) Learn to draw the Zentangle way, which begins by mindfully drawing patterns with pen and paper. A Zentangle drawing is not intended to be a realistic or descriptive picture. Learn to make deliberate strokes to form delightful patterns. Participants discover a well of innate creativity with this meditative practice that is fun, portable, satisfying and devoid of technology. Benefits include increasing creativity, relieving stress, and there are no mistakes. This is a wonderful class for those who think they cannot draw or do not have time for art. Advanced Zentangle (Adult) Delve further into your Zentangle practice, expanding with various tangle patterns. We will explore with color using drawing pencils on white and black tiles. Making Holiday Cards with Zentangle (ages 8 - adult) Create special and unique holiday cards with tangle patterns. Celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas using pens, pencils, watercolor paint and stickers to delight friends and family! Supplies and instruction provided to draw tangles on blank paper cards. Note: You must have completed an introduction to Zentangle class with a CZT to enroll in this session. Get Loose with Mixed Media (Adult) This workshop stresses individual expression while exploring new ways of using materials. We will mix the following materials in various combinations: handmade paper, images, text, matte medium, gold foil, oil pastels, wax, fabric and embellishments. Learn to experiment, loosen up and just "play" with new materials and techniques. All materials are included. However, if you have personal photos or texts you want to incorporate into your work then bring them, along with your enthusiasm! Instructor: Maria Latour Sunday October pm. This class is a hands-on introduction to the cold process soap making method, and will include discussion of oils, colors, herbs, fragrances, molding, cutting and curing. Safety will be emphasized and everyone takes home a pound of fresh soap. Handmade soap makes great gifts and can be tailored to your skin type. 12 12 Cold Process Soap Swirling Techniques (Ages 18 and Up) Pre-requisite: Cold Process I- Soapmaking, or experience making Cold Process soap. Take your Soap making skills to the next level as you learn to make beautiful swirls. This class is a hands-on introduction to several different swirling techniques. Safety will be emphasized and everyone takes home a pound of fresh soap. Handmade soap makes great gifts and can be tailored to your skin type. 13 13 Framing Your Artwork to Make It Stand Out! This one day workshop will provide you an overview of the picture framing process from start to finish. Learn how to join your own frames, metal and wood. Pick out matting to complement your art work with mat cutting demos. Learn how to mount your artwork with the proper materials. Learn how to cut and clean glass and Plexiglas and how to hold the contents in a frame. Unlock the secrets of professional framers in a wide variety of areas and overcome common errors.
