There are so many classes to choose from. Sewing and quilting always make those dreary winter days pass more quickly. This is a great time to make a project, learn a technique or try something entirely outside your comfort zone. Mandy and Kathy have worked up some machine classes to make your quilts spectacular, there are lots of embroidery classes and you can even make a tuffet!! ~ Judi OPEN SEW Check the calendar and if the classroom is available, it is yours to use. We like the sound of busy sewing machines and the chatter of sewers in the classroom. So, bring a friend and use the tables to sandwich your quilt, cut the fabric for your next project or finish a UFO. Local Quilt Shop Day is a day for quilters worldwide to celebrate their local independently-owned quilt shops. Without the support of local quilters, brick and mortar shops...aka your favorite local quilt shops...would not be there when you need them! If you need help coordinating colors for your next quilt or finding just the right backing fabric; if you run out of thread in the middle of your quilting or embroidery project or simply need some encouragement to finish that UFO, friendly staff are always there and ready to help! This is my favorite quilt shop of all. Great selection of fabrics and a knowledgeable, helpful and friendly staff, one of our customers recently posted. 3 Patchwork Plus Newsletter Winter 2017 Upcoming Events...at the Patch QUILT RETREAT 2017 The Patchwork Plus Quilt Retreat will be held at Christ the King Retreat House and Conference Center beginning on Monday, May 15, 2017 and ending at noon on Thursday, May 18, It is located at 500 Brookford Road in Syracuse where the grounds are located in a secluded wooden area that is sure to inspire a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. Come join us. We have SO MUCH FUN. You get to spend quality quilting time with your friends, with plenty of time to finish your projects and see some demos. You ll have your meals prepared for you, and you can walk around the lovely grounds of Christ the King Retreat House. The cost is $345 for those who stay overnight and $260 for commuters. Registration begins Thursday, January 5, Call Patchwork Plus ( ) or stop by the shop to register. Half payment will be required at the time of sign-up. Space is limited, so sign up early. Marcellus MODERN Quilt Club Second Sunday at 1pm at Patchwork Plus At a recent MMQC workshop, quilt artist Carol Taylor encouraged members to set aside rulers and pins and try their hand at improvised cutting and piecing. Each Going In Circles finished piece had its own unique look. The Marcellus Modern Quilt Club meets on the second Sunday of the month to explore the modern quilt movement, to inspire each other to think out of the box and to take part in modern quilt challenges. The latest challenge, using a Michael Miller fabric is due at the January meeting. Come visit and see what innovative designs have been made with this challenge fabric! Page 3

4 The Lunch Bunch Kimberbell Cuties Table Toppers Michele, Dolores and Kathy have been busy planning and stitching out new embroidery projects for the upcoming winter months. Put on those snowshoes and join them for some fun new projects sure to chase away those winter blues! The Refresher Course: Need an embroidery refresher or new to embroidery? We will be covering topics such as hooping, stabilizers, needles and Bernina E-books. We will also cover the Bernina Artlink software and the steps to transferring designs to your machine. Saturday, January pm $5.00 Requirements: Laptop Bring your lunch, sewing machine/ embroidery unit and sewing supplies for an afternoon of sewing fun. Kathy will guide you through a series of 12 table toppers for every season of the year that feature simple piecing and fusible applique. The applique can be done by machine embroidery or machine applique. Flying to Pieces Zipper Pouch: Tackle those flying geese in the hoop! A Kimberbell design, this in the hoop zipper pouch is a great project that can be made into 4 sizes (depending on your hoop size). Learn how to piece flying geese and line your bag all in the hoop. 5 BERNINA Q24 Long Arm Quilting Machine Certification Program This program is designed to get you familiar with the Bernina Q24 Long arm so that you can quilt those long lost quilt tops! The class covers the navigation of the machine, squaring and loading the quilt on the frame and basic free motion techniques. The book and quilt panel/sandwich are provided in the cost of the class. Classes are offered on Mondays and Saturdays 10 4pm. Cost: $120 (Limit 2 per class) BERNINA Q20 Long Arm Table Model We also offer the certification program on the Q20 table model long arm. This class will cover the navigation of the machine as well as basic free motion techniques. The book and quilt panel/sandwich are provided in the cost. Classes are offered on Mondays and Saturdays 10am 2pm. Cost: $60 (Limit 1 per class) Rental Program Once you have completed the certification program, the Q24 long arm and the Q20 table model long arm are available for rental. Pantograph classes are available upon request. Taught by Terri Simmons, one of our Longarm Educators, this class will cover the basics of pantographs from setting up to stitching them out. What About Those Rulers? Purchased the new Bernina Ruler Foot and Rulers? Not sure what to do next? Ruler work classes will be available on Wednesday nights throughout the month of March. Mandy will guide you through the basics using the Bernina Ruler Work Panel. This panel was designed by Amanda Murphy and showcases the various rulers in the Bernina Ruler Work Kit. 6 Classes.at the Patch In these classes, Mandy Applebee will help you tackle the final step of finishing your quilts the quilting. Using your domestic sewing machine you will begin filling your library with designs from straight line quilting to fancy feathers and beyond! Machine Quilting 1 (MQ1) Straight Lines: Wednesday, January 25, 1-4pm $40.00 We will learn straight lines with our feed dogs engaged. Machine Quilting 2 (MQ2) Circles and Curves: Wednesday, February 22, 1-4pm $40.00 We will begin exploring quilting FREE-MOTION designs. You MUST be able to use a darning or free-motion foot with your machine, and be familiar with how it works. Machine Quilting 3 (MQ3) Swirls and Vines: Wednesday, March 22, 1 4pm $40.00 Building confidence, we will explore swirls and vines and build upon the design library. Pre-requisite: Machine Quilting 1 AND 2 Machine Quilting 4 (MQ4) Feathers 1: Wednesday, April pm $40.00 Now that we are confident with designs, we will tackle the design that frightens people most.feathers. We will explore different feather types and techniques to create them. Pre-requisite: Machine Quilting 1, 2 AND 3 Machine Quilting 5 (MQ5) Background Fillers: Wednesday, May pm $40.00 The designs learned in this class are quite versatile depending upon the scale which they are quilted. I will teach you how to make them tiny to be used as background fillers or to add interest to large open spaces. Pre-requisite: Machine Quilting 1, 2, 3,and 4 Machine Quilting 6 (MQ6) Fancy Feathers 6: Wednesday, June pm $40.00 Now that we know how to make feathers, we will be learning how to kick them up a notch and deck them out and become works of art. Pre-requisite: Machine Quilting 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 Machine Quilting 7 (MQ 7) Sashings: Wednesday, July pm $40.00 We will learn 10 different designs for sashing and skinny borders. Perfect for those 2 ½ or 3 inch sections of your quilt. Pre-requisite: Machine Quilting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 Machine Quilting 8 (MQ 8) Grid Based Designs: Wednesday, August pm $40.00 Explore the fun and endless design options available using repeated shapes on a grid. Be careful.these can become addictive! Pre-requisite: Machine Quilting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 FREE-MOTION BLOCK PARTY with Mandy Applebee Not sure how to quilt those blocks? Join the Free-Motion Block Party and spark your creative quilting spirit! Each month you will receive directions to complete four basic quilt blocks. Bring those completed blocks to class ready to be quilted and Mandy will guide you through four original quilting designs. You will end up with 48 completed quilt blocks ready to be sashed and bound. 7 Classes.at the Patch Welcome back Jessica VanDenburgh of Sew Many Creations! Jessica taught her Diva Wallet class at our Holiday Happening in November and we couldn t let her go without promising to come back again. The students loved her Road Trip bag so here is the class.. ROAD TRIP BAG with Jessica VanDenburgh This bag is an appropriate size for a carry on and also has a luggage strap. There is an adjustable shoulder strap, top zipper, back zipper and two front flap pockets. With this beautiful, functional bag, you ll have to watch that no one else takes your bag off the plane! Saturday, May pm $35.00 Perri Kentner comes our way from Connecticut twice a year and loves to teach at Patchwork Plus. She always finds an intriging pattern for her class! TWIST AND SHOUT with Perri Kentner This is a fun pattern that can be used to make any quilted project (from placemats to king sized quilts). By sewing strip sets together and giving them just the right twist you will create this delightful intertwining pattern. I have made my sample using bright batiks, but this works with any fabric style from traditional to modern. The only requirement is two dark and two light fabrics. Hope to see you in May! SKILL BUILDERS with Sharon Stroud One block remains in Sharon s current Skill Builders series for machine piecers. Choose your fabric to match your décor...or not...and make one of these whimsical yet functional tuffets for your home. Kathy will guide you through piecing the top in the first class and assembling your tuffet in the next class. Go home with your finished tuffet! The Diva Wallet takes just two fat quarters or coordinating scraps, a wallet frame and a zipper. Make and finish your wallet in class and you may have time to make another! Thursday, February 9 1 4pm $25.00 If you like wool, or would like to learn to work with wool, this is a fun and quick-to-stitch wool project designed by Kim Diehl. MALARKEY WOOL PENNIES TABLE MAT with Nancy Austin The pattern can be found in Primitive Quilts and Projects Magazine (Spring 2013). If you don t have the magazine, it can be downloaded from the magazine s website for $6.99 (the entire issue). So grab your wool scraps (or buy a small bundle) and enjoy some stitching time. Teacher will bring extra scraps if you don t have a huge stash. 10 Classes.at the Patch Sharon Bottle-Souva returns with two of her most popular classes. MAGGIE S BAGS GARDEN SNAPSHOT with Sharon Bottle Souva Sharon Bottle Souva, an award winning quilt maker, will lead participants in creating an original garden themed quilted panel based on inspirational photos, paintings or imagination. Students will be guided in working on their own designs, choosing fabrics, fusing, machine appliqué and free motion quilting. Each quilted panel will be completed (or nearly completed) in class. This is an opportunity to recreate your flower gardens in fabric. with Sharon Bottle Souva Sharon Bottle Souva has been making these original purses for many years. She now is sharing the process used in making these wonderful colorful fabric bags. Layer 3 coordinating fabrics, sew, cut, fray the edges and assemble the bags. Students will braid their own handles, pick out a button or two and finish the bag all in class. Come and make these sweet, fun purses for yourself or make as a gift for the holidays. Saturday, March 4 10:30-2:30pm $50.00 Saturday, January 14 10:30-4:30pm $65.00 Sharon Stroud offers a new twist on her hand piecing series...a variety of smaller pieces. THE BLISS OF HAND PIECING: SO DARN CUTE! with Sharon Stroud If you are new to hand piecing, or have lots of experience, this class is for you. Instead of the usual larger, long-term project, we are working on smaller projects that allow you to learn the techniques while actually being able to finish them! And they are just "So Darn Cute"! Thimbles, elongated hexagons, coffins(!), Texas stars, diamonds--oh, MY! We will be using acrylic templates (some available from Sharon, some at the shop), and a quick and easy way to cut and mark and get right to the good stuff--the sewing! All skill levels welcome. Sundays: Jan 15, Feb 19, Mar 19, April 23, May 21, June :30-3:30pm $ payable in two installments one when you register and the balance on April 23. Page 10

11 Knitters Corner I am sure by now most of our customers are aware of the fact that our Yarn Department is coming to an end. We still have some lovely stock left for you, especially cottons for spring and baby knitting. All yarn and needles are 50% off and all books and leaflets are $ Please stop in and look it over before it totally disappears. MONDAY KNITTERS Knitters are still gathering at the store on the first Monday morning of the month. We will only be knitting in the MORNINGS in the months of January, February, March, and April. We meet from 10-12:30pm on those mornings. All knitters are welcome to join us, bring your own project to work on. Help is available if you need some assistance. January, 2 February, 6 March, 6 April, 3 The American Heart Association is asking knitters to donate RED HATS for babies born in the month of February, to raise the awareness of heart disease and strokes. We need to have these by January 13, They can be dropped off at the store and we will deliver them. Patchwork Plus Knitters knit hats for charity and we send hats to the VA Hospital, Samaritan Center and the Neo Natal Department at Crouse Hospital. We do have patterns for these hats. ~ Kitsie KNIT IN In early December, May Arnett and Kitsie Demeree delivered 186 Hats to the Samaritan Center in Syracuse. 126 of these were generated by the faithful knitters who attended our Knit In on November 7. Everyone seemed to he have a fun time and really produced a lot of hats! The rest were donated by a knitter who works on a knitting loom. Needless to say we were pleased and the Samaritan Center staff was even more pleased with our donation. We are planning to hold another Knit In November of Many thanks to all our knitters, Judi, Kitsie and May CLASS POLICY REGISTRATION: A deposit of half the class fee must be paid when you register for a class. Phone-in registrations will be accepted with a credit card payment. The remainder of the fee is due at the first class. If you are registering for a class by mail, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your supply list. REFUNDS: Refunds are available when a cancellation is made at least one week before the first class. In fairness to our teachers, if you cancel within 6 days of the class the fee is non-refundable unless there is a waiting list and your spot can be filled. If a class is cancelled by the teacher or Patchwork Plus, you will receive a full refund. SUPPLY LISTS: Supply lists for classes will be provided upon registration. If you are one of the first to sign up for a class, do not purchase supplies until we are sure that there will be sufficient enrollment. SEWING MACHINES: If you are unable to bring your own sewing machine, a limited number of machines will be available for use in class. These machines will be available on a first come, first served basis. Please sign up for one when you register. Students receive a 10% discount on all class supplies. Page 11
