I have two granddaughters graduating from high school, so we have moved the tent sale to June 20th. In July we will be at Quilting by the Lake and then the AQS show in Syracuse. May has fabulous classes scheduled and has added some new teachers to our group. And then, of course, Row by Row will be bringing lots of new faces into the shop. All About Machine Embroidery...with Karen Donnelly Using the class descriptions from Bernina, Karen will cover these embroidery topics in each session, but if the project is not one you would be interested in doing, you are still welcome to come and apply the new design to your own project. Luckily, local author and quilter, Joan Ford, has researched every angle of that very topic and will be at the store on Saturday, June 13th at 1pm to share some tips with you and sign her latest book. Joan says, Looking for some tips to keep your quilting hobby on track? The book When Bad Things Happen to Good Quilters might be just the ticket to stay motivated as you navigate the sticky spots you might encounter. 5 Clubs and Gatherings...at the Patch First Friday Fun Our "First Friday" group has taken off. Join us on the first Friday of each month for a night of sewing fun (or afternoon if you can't wait until evening). Dig out a project from the past or start a new one. If you don't want to bring your sewing machine, call ahead. Share in the laughs, snacks and sewing fun! There is no cost for this night out just bring a donation for the local food pantry. Marcellus Modern Quilt Club MMQC meets the second Sunday of the month at 1pm at Patchwork Plus. Now 25 members strong, we enjoy learning from each other what this new movement called modern quilting is all about. Our block swap project concluded in April and we can t wait to see what everyone does with their blocks. The Michael Miller very orange solid fabric challenge is due in September...just in time for our first quilt show. The group will host its first quilt show on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8 at the shop. Come see what we have been working on all year! The first Friday we will be at the dedication of Barbara Feinstein s sewing room at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn see details below. The Barbara Feinstein Sewing Studio The Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn invites you to a weekend of celebration, creativity and camaraderie, as it dedicates its new Sewing Studio in memory of Barbara Feinstein with an Open Studio Retreat for quilters, knitters, & stitchers. 6 Patchwork Plus Newsletter Spring/Summer 2015 Classes...at the Patch SERENITY CIRCLES QUILT with Karen Donnelly The Serenity Circles Quilt is made easy with the Crazy Curves Templates by Elisa Wilson. If you think the traditional Drunkard s Path block is a difficult one, you will be surprised to find how easy they are to cut and piece with the help of these templates. They come in several sizes, so you are not limited to the size of the project displayed at the shop. You can start with a simple smaller table topper if you like, but if you want to make a quilt like the one in the shop, Karen will show you how to use all of the fabrics required by the pattern to add the borders to the Serenity Circles pattern. Basics for Beginners with Judy Sheridan In response to a question we get asked frequently at the shop, Do you have classes for beginners?, Judy will offer her Quilt Basics class again this fall. Based on Doug Leko s book, Quilt Basics, Judy will offer tips and techniques for precision rotary cutting, strip piecing, borders, machine quilting and finishing bindings. Choose your fabrics and make this beginner quilt uniquely yours! Perri s students got a sneak preview of her 3-D block class last year so don t delay in signing up. This class is sure to fill up fast! Book required: Quilt Basics by Doug Leko Save the dates: Fridays: Sept 25, Oct 9, Oct 23, 3-D Tumbling Blocks with Perri Kentner Create 3-D Tumbling blocks to design a table runner, wall hanging, or just keep on going. There is no limit to the shape or size of your design. Perri will provide over a dozen threedimensional block patterns which you can pick and choose from to create your project. Everyone s finished project will be different. Be careful, this is addictive! Once you make one you want to keep on going. Friday, May pm CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR FEATHERWEIGHT with Sharon Stroud If you missed it before, Sharon is back with this essential class for all Featherweight owners. You will go home knowing how to clean and oil your machine, where to lubricate, how to do simple repairs and more. This is for the old black Singer Featherweight machine only. HAND EMBROIDERY with Suzanne Moulton From Liberty Cottage Country Goods & Primitive Wares SKILL BUILDERS with Sharon Stroud Summer Pears from Crabapple Hill will be our subject for this basic embroidery class using three fat quarters of tone on tone prints and floss. Suzanne will demonstrate the basic stitches and techniques used in most of their patterns including the assembly of three dimensional objects. Sharon continues her series of Skill Builders classes for machine piecers. Each 15-inch block design is chosen to increase your skills. Join Sharon for lots of fun and tons of information that you can apply to all your machine work! All skill levels welcome! Also explained will be; stuffing objects so they aren t lumpy, how to weight them to stand up and closing holes with stitching that doesn t show after the pears are stuffed. The pears make a great year round décor accent in a bowl on the table or kitchen counter. Learn to transfer the template to the fabric, cut it out and start hand piecing. The larger size hexagons used in this piece will allow you to easily learn the techniques, and the smaller project is fun and fast. There are NO irregular edges to bind! 8 Classes...at the Patch Kid s Classes KIDS CAMP FOR BEGINNERS with Karen Donnelly Participants will choose from a variety of projects. We usually average one project each day. We ll start with a pincushion and scrap bag to keep at their sewing station. After that, they will chose the fabrics they wish to use to make a purse--travel pillow--skirt or PJ shorts--notebook or art book cover. Monday thru Thursday, July am -1pm $150 QUILT CAMP FOR KIDS with Karen Donnelly Cost includes the fabrics and thread required to make this quilt. Participants will choose the fabrics they wish to use in their projects. They will piece and quilt them on the machines. Students should have some sewing experience. This class is limited to four. Monday thru Thursday, August am -1:30pm $140 TEXTURAL LANDSCAPE with Sharon Bottle Souva Here is your chance to create simple landscapes using techniques in appliqué, reverse appliqué, texture and random piecing. These are all techniques that can be used to enhance any of your pictorial quilted art. Students will learn pattern making, raw edge appliqués, reverse appliqué and random piecing while making a small original wall quilt. I will demonstrate the use of freezer paper to create patterns, teach composition and perspective, help students choose appropriate fabrics for the project, and discuss and demonstrate quilting stitches using variegated threads and binding options. Saturday, May :30pm $65.00 For 40 years, I have sewn wedding dresses, marching-band uniforms, dance costumes, doll clothes, quilts, curtains, and hoola-hoop tents to name a few. I now focus on quilted purses. With such an array of gorgeous fabric available at Patchwork Plus, I couldn t resist using their fabrics in my purse designs. I sell on-line through square and on Etsy. This will be my first venture into teaching, and I look forward to socializing with women who love fabric and sewing as much as I do! GRACIE S HANDBAG with Kathy Mahardy Gracie s Handbag is the perfect size to learn the techniques used in making quilted purses. With one exterior pocket, 4 interior pockets and a zippered closure, it can hold all your necessities! It measures approximately 13x8x3. No pattern pieces are involved: it is all done by rotary cutting. With so many gorgeous fabrics found here at Patchwork Plus, you will want to make more than one! This passion has grown to include quilt design. Shoe pattern-man was an early career of mine and this has been useful for me in making my quilt designs. As I saw the shoe industry dwindling in the USA I went on to attend Syracuse University School of Architecture where I graduated. Designing quilts fits in with my love of art, designing, and making things. SOUTHWEST SUN with Ron Stefanak For his first class at Patchwork Plus, Ron has chosen his Southwest Sun design. Available in two variations, this pattern teaches techniques for crisp points on triangles and explores the variations and design possibilities for your quilt. Ron is an enthusiastic quilter and it is impossible not to be excited about your quilt when working with Ron. He is developing several new paper-pieced patters and we look forward to having him again for more classes. 10 Classes...at the Patch WOOL HYDRANGEA TABLE MAT with Nancy Austin This is a great class for anyone who wants to try appliqueing with wool. The kit has all the fabric and wool you need to complete this adorable hydrangea mat. Nancy will take you through the process step by step and you will learn many tips. Wool applique is very forgiving and extremely addictive! Sunday, May pm $30.00 SERGER/OVERLOCK NOTEBOOK REFRESHER with Michele R. Ball, Licensed Martha Pullen Instructor Do you just use your serger to overcast edges because you are not comfortable changing stitches? Is your serger gathering dust because you don t want to even think about threading/re-threading it? Or, do you just want a refresher? If so, this class is for you. We will review threading for the different stitches and discuss stitch applications. As part of the class you will receive a Martha Pullen designed handout showing various serger stitches. The handout has spaces for you to attach your stitched samples so that it can be used as a serger notebook reference after the class. Bring your serger (3, 4, 5 or more thread, any brand IN GOOD WORKING ORDER, your instruction manual and all the accessories that came with it. You will also need new needles (size 90), different colors of thread (3, 4, 5 or more), and scissors. This is a refresher class, not a new owner s class. If you do not know how to use your serger a new owner s class should be your first step. One-on-one new owner classes can be arranged with Patchwork Plus. You will use your renewed skills to complete a surprise mini project. A kit containing workbook fabric samples and fabric for the mini project will be provided. Class size limited to 5 students. Wednesday, June :30pm $30.00 ART NOUVEAU WITH THREAD PAINTING with Jan Navales, Textile Designer Spring offers a new, very fun and very easy class that will show you how to add texture and new dimension to your own creativity. This creativity can be used in quilts, for a framed piece of art, home decor such as pillows, or a wonderful addition to a tote or bag. Using a piece of hand painted fabric with a floral Art Nouveau theme you will see how free motion stitching can change the simple painted piece of fabric into a new and exciting art piece. There is no wrong way. It is always serendipity and a wow experience. There will be 6 designs to choose from with several different color ways. You will be shown how to use your sewing machine to create line work around a painting that lacks any definition. You will create the definition with free motion stitching. Choosing your own thread colors and coordinating fabrics makes this class extra fun. I will discuss color and ideas to make your piece outstanding. If you have never done free motion stitching,this is a great way to get started and feel comfortable doing it. It really is fun and opens new doors to expand your creativity. 11 Knitting...at the Patch The Knitting Corner When "SPRING" arrives we think of spring cleaning and Patchwork Plus employees have been busy doing that here at the store. All of our SALE YARN is now located at the far right of the Yarn Department and there are many really good bargains for you to take advantage of. We also have a nice supply of Summer cotton and cotton blend yarns for your Spring and Summer knitting. You may want to get a jumpstart on holiday and baby gifts too. We will not be having any knitting classes this summer, but check them out in the fall newsletter. Monday Knitters First Monday of the Month Newcomers are always welcome to the Monday Knitting group. We share ideas for knitting projects and techniques as we work on our own individual knitting projects. Help is available if you need some assistance. We also knit hats to donate to several charities - infant, children and adult. Free patterns are available. Come and spend an hour or so with fellow knitters. The morning session is from 10-12:30pm and the evening session runs from 6:30-9pm. The day you attend you will receive a 10% discount off any knitting products you purchase. The fee for each of these sessions is food for the local food pantries. Mondays : May 4 - June 1 - July 6 - August 3 Sept 14 (2nd Monday) Have wonderful summer! ~Kitsie Itty-Bitty Challenge Patchwork Plus Knitters have knit hundreds of hats for charities over the past nine years and the tiny baby hats go to the Neo-Natal Department at Crouse Hospitable in Syracuse. I saw this very cute bear hat online and decided to challenge all of you to use this pattern and see how many we can create for our "bitty ones". This hat, "Itty Bitty Bear Cubs", was designed by Carolyn Ingram and is a free download on Ravelry.com. Please let me know if you need help getting the pattern. I have Carolyn's permission to use this pattern for the challenge and I will be letting her know how many we get. Monday morning knitters take a break from knitting just long enough to smile for the camera! The ears are a little tricky so we may have a knitting day to help with ears. The pattern uses sport weight yarn. Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino and Cascade Sport work well; Crofter dk, in our sale dept. works well also. There are two sizes in the pattern either size and any color will be fine. This is a nice easy small project for the summer. Let s set a goal for October 1. I have knit several and they are on display in the store. Have fun! ~ Kitsie CLASS POLICY REGISTRATION: A deposit of half the class fee must be paid when you register for a class. Phone-in registrations will be accepted with a credit card payment. The remainder of the fee is due at the first class. If you are registering for a class by mail, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your supply list. REFUNDS: Refunds are available when a cancellation is made at least one week before the first class. In fairness to our teachers, if you cancel within 6 days of the class the fee is non-refundable unless there is a waiting list and your spot can be filled. If a class is cancelled by the teacher or Patchwork Plus, you will receive a full refund. SUPPLY LISTS: Supply lists for classes will be provided upon registration. If you are one of the first to sign up for a class, do not purchase supplies until we are sure that there will be sufficient enrollment. SEWING MACHINES: If you are unable to bring your own sewing machine, sewing machines are available for use in class. Please sign up for one when you register.
