Our goal is to provide our students with the skills an Expert Knitter must possess by means of a varied, interesting, and comprehensive curriculum. We have designated a total of fifteen classes as Core Requirements. There will also be three required electives, one in knitting and one in each of two other disciplines such as crochet, weaving, spinning, etc. A Capstone Project will be the culmination of the program for students. This project will require students to utilize the skills they have learned to design, knit and finish an original sweater for themselves in pieces from measurements. Students will be assigned a mentor for support, consultation and advice. The project will be reviewed by a committee, and, if accepted, the WEBS Expert Knitter Certificate will be awarded. A yearly fee of $75.00 is the only additional charge for participation in the program over and above the usual course and materials fees. 8 Nordic Knitting Classes with Arne and Carlos Nordic Christmas Ball, The Squirrel, with Arne and Carlos The winter holidays are a special time for those who live in the north. Winters are dark and cold, and people spend a lot of time sitting by a warm stove with some handwork. Their knitting antics are the perfect recipe for holiday decor that is colorful and festive, whatever your skill level. Note: Magic Loop or 2 Circulars will work as well as DPNs. Saturday 10/20/2018 Nordic Solveig Hat with Arne and Carlos Tuition: $100 1:00pm 4:00pm This day-long class is the only instruction you'll need for a lifetime of beautifully crafted and well-fitting colorwork hats from Scandinavian design superstars Arne and Carlos. You'll learn the designers' tips and tricks to take your stranded knitting to the next level as well as learn about the history and uses of traditional Norwegian stranded colorwork. A project like this is a great way to perfect your stranded knitting in the round. As long as you know how to knit and purl, and have some experience with stranded colorwork, this class is made for you! The most interesting part of the class will be to work with a yarn that is not traditionally used for colorwork. Knitting the hat in Kidsilk Haze combined with Felted Tweed may seem an unusual choice, but using two ends of the mohair yarn blended with tweed works beautifully for Fair Isle knitting and gives the traditional Norwegian look a new, updated, and modern twist. Prerequisite: Students should have some stranded colorwork experience; and should be able to knit, purl, increase, decrease, and have familiarity with circular knitting. NOTE: Magic Loop or 2 Circular needles may be used in place of DPNs. Tuition: $200 Sunday 10/21/2018 9:00am 3:00pm 15 Introduction to Brioche Knitting 16 Are you ready to move beyond basic knit and purl patterns? Would you like to add a new set of skills to your arsenal? Are you curious about brioche stitch, which produces a lofty and soft fabric with lots of "give"? In this four-session class, we will learn the basics of one- and two-color brioche stitch. Sessions one and two will introduce students to one-color brioche stitch, two color brioche stitch worked flat, how to fix mistakes and some of the simple increases and decreases used to create cables. Students will learn how to work two-color brioche stitch worked in the round and explore syncopation to create a cowl in sessions three and four. If you are comfortable with knit and purl stitch, knitting on circular needles, and would love to add texture to your knits, this is the class for you. *Required Text: Knitting Fresh Brioche by Nancy Marchant Prerequisite: Knitting II, or equivalent. Students must be familiar with knitting in the round on a circular needle. Instructor: Cyndi Shepard Tuition: $95 Wednesdays 11/7, 11/14, 11/28, 12/5 A Cornucopia of Cast Ons and a Bevy of Bind Offs* Do you always use the same cast-ons and bind-offs for everything you knit? Here at WEBS, we insist that everyone know the long-tail cast-on and the traditional bind-off, but there is a world of other methods out there which can make your knitted items look very professional indeed: tubular cast-on and bind-off, knitted cast-on, cable cast-on, picot cast-on and bind-off, chained cast-on, provisional cast-on, knit 2 together bind-off, purl 2 together bind-off, I-cord bind-off, yarn-over bind-off, just to name a few. If you'd like to add more style to your knitting, come join us for this class. *Required Text: Cast On, Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor. Prerequisite: Must know Long Tail Cast On and Traditional Bind Off Instructor: Beth Altimari Tuition: $75 Mondays 9/17, 9/24 Requirement Filled: Cast On, Bind Off 5:00pm 8:00pm

9 Elizabeth Zimmermann's Mitered Mittens and Ganomey Hat Swatching For Success A gauge swatch will tell you everything you need to know about the final outcome of the hours you'll spend with some beautiful yarn and your favorite needles. Swatching For Success will help you find out why that's true! In spite of all the information your gauge swatch imparts, many knitters skip this vital step to the detriment of their project's fit and feel. Students will dissect the elements of a properly knit gauge swatch including stitch count, row count, needle size, and fiber content. Most importantly, you'll become much more in tune with your knitting. In addition, the class will discuss the best gauge for various kinds of knitted garments, accessories, and home goods. Your knitting wants you to take this class! The technique of colorful stranded knitting, never with more than two colors in a row, resulted in incredibly intricate patterns that are now copied the world over. Fair Isle knitting has a practical side, as well; the garments knit with this stranded technique are sturdy, warm, and light. Fair Isle Tam will teach knitters the basics of this traditional art, focusing on color selection and progression, the art of stranding floats, two-handed knitting, and the history of Fair Isle patterning. 11 First Cardigan With Set-In Sleeves* If you're ready to move beyond the world of scarves to the world of sweaters, this is the class for you. You'll make a basic, worsted-weight V-neck cardigan with set-in sleeves, classic and wearable. The main goal of the class is to teach you how to finish your sweater using horizontal to horizontal, vertical to vertical, and horizontal to vertical seaming techniques. You'll also learn how to do a clean button-band pick-up, one-row button holes, a button spacing formula, and how to fit a sleeve into a shoulder. Prerequisite: Knitting II, or equivalent Instructor: Beth Altimari Requirement Filled: First Cardigan Tuition: $145 Seaming Workshop Seaming a garment can often seem like the hardest part of the project. This seaming workshop will give you the knowledge to empower you, once and for all, to conquer any seaming finish! Horizontal to horizontal, vertical to vertical, and horizontal to vertical seaming will be explained, as will garter stitch grafting, seaming reverse stockinette, 3-needle bind-off, whipstitch, and kitchener stitch. Let your knitted projects shine with invisible seams and flawless finishing! Instructor: Beth Altimari Tuition: $75 Tuesdays 10/9, 10/23, 11/6, 11/20, 12/4, 12/11 10:30am 12:30pm Thursdays 11/8, 11/15 5:00pm 8:00pm Top-Down Set-in Sleeve Cardigan Top-down sweaters are brilliant for many reasons: you can fit as you knit, making it easy to tailor a sweater to your own body; you can do the shaping at the start of your project rather than at the end, as in many bottom-up pieced sweaters; and fewer seams make knitting a sweater much more approachable. In this class, you'll knit a classic top-down sweater with a twist-- set-in sleeves that are flattering to any body type, with less bulk and more stability. An ingenious sleeve cap done with short rows makes a perfectly adjusted shape for your garment. This is a revolutionary technique, pioneered by designer Elizabeth Doherty and brought to WEBS by Erin Holman, the Sweater Sherpa. The pattern for this class is included in the price of the class. You should have made at least one sweater (doesn't have to be a top-down sweater), and be comfortable knitting on both circular and double-pointed needles. Prerequisite: Knitting II. Must have made a sweater, have experience with DPNS and circulars, have picked up stitches before. Instructor: Erin Holman Tuition: $95 Mondays 10/22, 11/5, 11/19, 12/3 21 Increases and Decreases to Suit your Projects If you've ever wondered how to tell a right-slanting increase from a left-slanting increase, or puzzled over how and where to decrease in a stitch pattern, this class will answer any question you've ever thought of. We will cover a variety of increases and decreases to understand when to use each and to master how to do them. This will include simple, decorative and slanting stitches. Prerequisite: Knitting II or equivalent Instructor: Susan Baron Tuition: $50 Saturday 10/13/ :30am 2:00pm

12 Math for Knitters Math can be fun, especially for knitters who want to be in control of their work. In this workshop, we ll discuss the nitty-gritty of knitting gauge, and we ll play with percentages and pattern stitch numbers to make sizing adjustments for those times you simply can t get gauge on the perfect yarn for the perfect project. We ll also talk about yarn-substitution arithmetic and adding simple shaping to garments, and experiment with other knitting number-magic, like the Fibonacci sequence and MacGyver-style measuring. At the end of the workshop, you ll have some new math tools for your knitting skills kit, and you ll be ready to play with, not by, the numbers on your next project! (NOTE: This class includes a 1-hour lunch break. Please bring your own lunch!) Instructor: Erin Holman Saturday 9/29/2018 Tuition: $60 10:00am 3:00pm Bead Your Knitting - Teardrops Cowl Learn a beaded picot cast-on, and how to bead your knitting with a crochet hook, and wind up with a sparkly and warm winter accessory! In this class, we ll discuss the woolen end of the spinning spectrum. Woolen yarns are light, soft, spongy, fuzzy, and warm! We will look at best fibers and preparations for spinning woolen yarns and practice the spinning techniques to get a soft, lofty single. In this discussion, I ll define the commonly available commercial fiber preparations and preparations we can make ourselves, and discuss the spinning techniques best suited to each. Before we begin spinning, we ll make rolags on hand cards, and practice hand carding techniques. We ll also look carefully at the difference between roving and combed top, and practice techniques to work on the woolen end of the spectrum with both of these common fiber preparations. We ll talk a lot about role of twist and how we use twist to build the yarn structure of a good woolen yarn. We ll end with plying our newly spun woolen yarns and discuss yarn finishing techniques to maximize the qualities of our woolen yarns. Finally, we ll discuss the best projects to highlight the qualities of woolen yarns. Worsted Spinning Workshop On the flip side of the woolen end of the spinning spectrum are the worsted yarns. Worsted yarns are dense, sleek, durable, and lustrous. We will look at best fibers and preparations for spinning worsted yarns and practice the spinning techniques to get a smooth, consistent single. In this discussion, I ll continue the conversation about the commonly available fiber preparations and discuss the spinning techniques best suited to each. I ll demonstrate how to make hand combed top. We ll talk about how to do this at home, although we won t practice this in class. We ll also look carefully at the difference between roving and combed top, and practice techniques to work on the worsted end of the spectrum with these common fiber preparations. We ll talk a lot about role of twist and twist angle in the structure of a good worsted yarn. We ll end by plying our newly spun worsted singles and discuss yarn finishing techniques to maximize the qualities of our worsted yarns. Finally, we ll discuss the best projects to highlight the qualities of worsted yarns.
