2 About Shetland Wool Week Saturday 26 September to Sunday 4 October 2015 S hetland Wool Week is a world renowned celebration of Britain s most northerly native sheep, the Shetland textile industry and the rural farming community on these islands. Shetland wool is a world class natural fibre, with a long standing reputation for quality, strength and excellence from the fleece to the textile products. Shetland knitwear has a deserved respect gained from many generations of hard working knitters and crofters producing some of the finest lace and Fair Isle knitwear. In the sixth year of Shetland Wool Week, there will be an extensive range of exhibitions, classes and events, which will cover many different subjects. These will include; weaving, spinning, dyeing, Fair Isle and lace knitting as well as many other fascinating subject areas. Events will take place from the most southern tip of Shetland, right up to the most northerly island of Unst, famous for its beautiful lacework, with many locations in between. Tutors for this year will include patron for Shetland Wool Week 2015, Donna Smith, Hazel Tindall, Kate Davies and all the way from Iceland, Helene Magnusson. To find out more head over to:

3 Getting to Shetland By Air There are several daily flights from the UK mainland to Sumburgh, Shetland including; Aberdeen (55 mins), Edinburgh (85 mins) and Glasgow (90 mins). All these airports are connected to London and other major European cities. 4 Baa-ble Hat by Donna Smith I nspired by the sheep of Shetland and the wintery colours of the land and sky, this hat is made in Shetland Aran weight yarn so is a quick knit. Two colours of yarn are used through the main part of the hat making it a very firm cosy garment to keep out the wind. The pattern has been written using DPNs (Double Pointed Needles) as is traditional in Shetland but it can easily be knitted on circular wires. Two different versions are shown, one in Jamieson s of Shetland Heather Aran and one in Jamieson and Smith Worsted Aran. Size One size to fit an average adult head, 52-57cm/20-22inches. Actual size: 48 cm/19 inches around rib, 21cm/8 inches from turned up edge to crown. Materials Jamieson s of Shetland Heather Aran, 50g balls. Shade A: Autumn x 1; Shade B: Natural White x 1; Shade C: Natural black x 1; Shade D: Highland Mist x 1. Jamieson and Smith Worsted Aran, 50g balls. Shade A: Peat x 2; Shade B: Snaa White x 1; Shade C: Coll Black x 1; Shade D: Silver Grey x 1 Other possible yarns are Shetland Organics and Foula Wool. Please note you may have to change needle size to get the correct tension. 4 mm DPNs; 4.5 mm DPNs; Tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Tension 23 stitches and 26 rows = 10cm/4inches. Abbreviations K = Knit; P = Purl; M1 = Make one by picking up one a loop between two stitches and knitting into the back of the new stitch. Instructions With 4mm needles and shade A cast on 96 stitches. Redistribute stitches onto two needles and get ready to work in the round ensuring that the work is not twisted. Rib Row 1: *K2, P2* Repeat from * to * to the end of the row. Continue with rib for another 24 rows. Next row: *K2, P2, M1* Repeat from * to * to the end of the row. (24 stitches increased making a total of 120 stitches). Main hat section Change to 4.5 mm needles. Follow chart from right to left repeating once more each row. Row 26: begin decreasing, knit 2 together where shown, then continue to follow the pattern decreasing where indicated. Last row You will be Left with 10 stitches on your needles. Break yarn and thread through the remaining stitches with a tapestry needle. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole and fasten off inside and weave in. Finishing Weave in all ends. Wash in warm soapy water and block on a balloon, bowl or small ball smoothing out the stitches. Pay particular attention to the crown and any uneven stitches. As the yarn has quite a lot of give make sure you don t stretch it too much. Make a pompom: use two pieces of card cut into 7cm diameter circles with 2.5 cm diameter holes in the centres and wrap round shades C & D to make a pompom. Sew onto the top of the hat. Pattern Notes Where the yarn has to be carried for more than five stitches on the sheep bodies, weave the other colour behind by crossing the yarn to avoid long floats on the back. At the crown you might find it easier to add more needles. Enjoy your Baa-ble hat!
