1 CAFFEINATE! PRESS-STYLE COFFEE MAKER COZY Designed by Coryna Blasko of heathcoteroad.co.uk Witty, clever, handsome, what s not to like about a man (who s not really a man), in fact, a Doctor, Who travels through time and space battling all manner of aliens intent on destroying the Earth? I couldn t help but notice that the worst of the alien creatures bears a striking resemblance to the popular French press-style of coffee maker. Conspiracy you say? Perhaps. For those among us who have succumbed to the command to Caffeinate!, this hand-knit cozy will help to keep your coffee hot in a not so sinister fashion. Size: fits standard press-style coffee makers that have a domed top, 750 ml (8 teacup) size. Gauge: 20stitches and 30 rows per 10 cm (4 ) square with 4.0 mm needles. When using the Caffeinate Coffee Press Cozy, preheat the glass carafe, add freshly ground coffee, fill to desired level with fresh, just off the boil water. Place the plunger lid on the pot with the stem raised. You may slip the Caffeinate Cozy over your coffee press at this time simply by passing the knob of the handle through the hole in the top of the cozy, please see the photographs. When your coffee (or tea) has brewed sufficiently, press the plunger carefully... mmmmmm Caffeinate!! heathcoteroad.co.uk Caffeinate! p 1/ 5 Coryna Blasko 2012
2 WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THE CAFFEINATE PRESS STYLE COFFEE COZY Size Fits domed top French press-style coffee makers In the 750 ml or 3 Imperial cups size Finished measurements (laid flat ) Across the bottom: 7.25 inches Across the ribbed area between welt no. 1 and welt no 2: 6.25 inches Base to top: 9.5 inches Gauge 20sts and 30rows over 10 cm (4in.) square 4.0 mm ( 8 UK/CAD or 6 US) needles Featured Yarns Cascade 220, 100 % Pure Peruvian Highland wool 200 m (220 yds) per 100 g ball, Navy Blue, 1 ball King Cole Merino Blend Aran 80m/50 g ball, Colour 767, Damson, 2 balls Actual Yarn Requirements 100g of Aran/Worsted weight yarn With a total of at least 160 m (175 yds) Notions 3 buttons Equipment 4.0 mm (8 UK/CAD or 6 (US) straight needles 4.0 mm (8 UK/CAD or 6 (US) dpns, (set of 4) Stitch holder or waste yarn 3.5 or 4.0 mm crochet hook Tapestry Needle YARN NOTES Pure wool has wonderful insulating properties that will keep your coffee hotter, longer and will also protect you better, should you brush against the side of a hot coffee press. I happened to have the Cascade 220 left over from the the Warmest Winter Hat and it turned out to be perfect. The deep navy blue seemed a good classic colour for this alien inspired image; all the better to hide in the night sky. Another Aran or Worsted weight yarn could be substituted but consider metres before grams and be sure to do a gauge swatch first! PATTERN NOTES Caffeinate is worked in one piece from the base to the top alternating between flat and in the round knitting to accommodate the openings for the handle and the spout, while minimizing any seaming. Please read carefully and pay attention to the turn/do not turn directions! The welts are made of a set up row that forms purl sts on the back of the fabric, a few rows of reverse stocking stitch ( p on the (RS) and k on the (WS)) the welt is then closed by making a linking row where the current row is worked together with the loops of the p sts on the set up row. This really is easy to do and saves having to sew additional seams later on. The large bobbles along the side of the cozy are set on a background of reverse stocking stitch and slipped k stitches form visual dividers between them. They are also non-traditional bobbles as they are made over 3 rows rather than in one. The bobbles on the top of the cozy are traditional 4 stitch ones. A single row of crochet is worked along the opening for the handle to give structure, a finished edge, and to make the button band and button loops. SPECIAL STITCHES AND/OR TERMS USED IN THIS PATTERN You will notice that this coffee cozy appears to have bobbles aligned along its sides. They are not traditional bobbles; that is, they are not worked in one stitch. These bobbles, rather, are worked over 3 rows and are therefore not listed as bobbles, per se in the stitches used section of the instructions. M5- make 5 stitches out of one as k into the front, back, front, back and then front of a single stitch. M4- make stitches out of one as k into the front, back, front, and then back of a single stitch. MB to make a classic bobble for the top of the Caffeinate Cozy, please do the following: (RS) Knit into the front, back, front and back of the next st. turn. (WS) Purl across the 4 sts, turn. (RS) Slip 2 sts (one at a time) k2tog, pass the 2 slipped sts over the k2tog st., again, one at a time... done! Tip: whenever making bobbles, be sure to knit the next st a bit tighter than normal, snugging it up, as it were, to maximize the fabric s integrity. heathcoteroad.co.uk Caffeinate! p 2/ 5 Coryna Blasko 2012
3 Cast on: Rows 1-7: Row 8: CAFFEINATE! the pattern begins here.. With 4.00 mm straight needles and holding both pins together, cast on 77 stitches using the long tail cast on method. Withdraw the second needle. Begin to knit the pattern as written working back and forth using the 4.00 mm circular needles (or straight pins if preferred). Work 7 rows in reverse stocking stitch, that is p all sts on the (RS) rows and k all sts on the (WS) rows. Begin Row 1: k all sts, Row 2: p all sts. Repeat Rows 1 and 2, twice, then Row 1, again. (RS) Knit this row together with your cast on row to form a looped welt this will shape the bottom of your Dalek. To do this from the (RS): knit the next st together with the loop formed by the associated cast on stitch (i.e. first stitch, first cast on loop). An easy way to do this is to place the loop on the left needle and then work the loop and next st together as k2tog. Repeat with each st to end of row. (77) Row 9: (WS) k1s, k3, (p1, k5) 3 times, (p1, k7) 4 times, (p1, k5) 3 times, p1, k3, k1s. (31) Rows 12 & 13: Knit all sts. Row 14: (k2, k2tog, k1, k2tog) 4 times, k1, k2tog. (22) Rows 15 & 16: Knit all sts. Row 17: (k2tog) 10 times, k1. (11) Cast off: Cast off all sts, trim yarn leaving enough yarn to sew away the end. N.B. Do not cinch the stitches to close the circle. You want to be able to fit the knob of the coffee press plunger through it! Finishing: With the (RS) facing, work 1 row of single crochet (sc) along the open edge of the cozy where the handle will go. With the right side of the piece facing you, begin at the left side edge. Make 3 buttonhole loops along the first side, check where the buttons should be placed on your press. The one pictured has button loops at the centre of the 1st, 3rd, and 4th bobbles. Two spaced in the centre of the handle and one below it is recommended. Button loops can be made by simply making a chain of 2 or 3 loops, then continuing in sc to the top of the handle area, adjusting sts as necessary to have a flat edge, then continue along the second side to the end without any shaping. Cut and secure the end. Sew the three buttons to correspond to the loops. Secure and sew away all tail ends. Block your Caffeinate according to the fibre you have chosen. Pure wools respond well to gentle steaming (don t squish the Dalektanium bobbles!) or damp block it right over your press for a more custom fit.
