2 Button Back Vest Designed by: Ryan Hernandez Classic layering piece with cables and lace panel on the front with buttons on the back. THE DETAILS THE FIT XS (S, M, L). Shown in size M. Bust: 31¼ (33¼, 36, 38) Length: 20½ (21, 21½, 22) SUPPLIES Yarn: 3 (3, 3, 4) hanks Natural Merino Natural Needles: Circular knitting needle (24 ) sized to get gauge. Circular knitting needle (16 ) one size smaller. Other stuff: Cable needle (cn) Five 5/8 buttons Removable markers Stitch holders Stitch markers GAUGE 4¼ sts and 6¾ rows/rounds = 1 using larger needle = 1 in Stockinette using larger needle. 27 sts of Cable and Lace chart measure 5¼ wide using larger needle. Suggested needle sizes: US 8 (5 mm) to get gauge, and size US 7 (4.5 mm) for smaller needle. Please note: Correct gauge is important but needle size is not. Change your needle size if necessary it doesn t matter what size needle you use to get correct gauge. HOW TO KNIT IT LOWER BODY With larger needle, cast on 138 (146, 158, 166) sts. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist sts, and place a marker for beginning of the round at the left side. Purl 1 round, knit 1 round, then purl 1 round piece measures about ½. Note: When working the Cable and Lace chart in the round, read all chart rows as RS rows. Set-up round: P1, k31 (33, 36, 38), work 5 center back sts in garter st beginning with a knit round, k31 (33, 36, 38), p1, pm for right side, p1, k20 (22, 25, 27), work Round 1 of Cable and Lace chart over 27 sts, k20 (22, 25, 27), p1. Working sts at each side as they appear (knit the knits and purl the purls), work the 5 center back sts in garter st and the 27 center front sts according to the chart pattern for 82 more rounds, ending with Round 23 of chart. Next round (Round 24 of chart): Work in pattern to 4 (4, 4, 5) sts before the endof-round marker piece measures about 13 from cast on. Dividing round (Round 25 of chart): Bind off 8 (8, 8, 10) sts removing marker as you come to it, work in pattern to 4 (4, 4, 5) sts before next marker, bind off 8 (8, 8, 10) sts removing marker, work in pattern to end 61 (65, 71, 73) sts each for front and back. Place back sts at start of round on a holder; front sts with working yarn attached remain on the needle. FRONT Note: When working the Cable and Lace chart in rows, read the odd-numbered rows as RS rows, and the even-numbered rows as WS rows. 4 Shape neck (RS): Work 20 (21, 22, 23) sts in pattern, join a second ball of yarn and bind off center 15 sts, work in pattern to end 20 (21, 22, 23) sts at each side. Working each side with its own ball of yarn, work 1 WS row even. Note: As you work the following shaping, if there are not enough sts to work a complete 4-st cable, work the sts of the partial cable in stockinette. Break yarns and place shoulder sts on separate holders. BACK Return 61 (65, 71, 73) held back sts to larger circular needle, and rejoin yarn with WS facing. Next row (WS): Work 1 row even in pattern. Next row (RS): K1, k2tog, k25 (27, 30, 31), knit center 5 garter sts, place the 32 (34, 37, 38) sts just worked on a holder for right back (do not break yarn); join a second ball of yarn, use the cable cast-on method to CO 5 sts, knit across 5 new sts, k25 (27, 30, 31), ssk, k1 32 (34, 37, 38) left back sts remain on needle. LEFT BACK Decrease row (WS): P1, ssp, purl to last 5 sts, k5 1 st decreased. Decrease row (RS): Knit to last 3 sts, ssk, k1 1 st decreased. Keeping 5 sts at center back edge in garter st, repeat the RS decrease row on next 0 (1, 3, 3) RS row(s) 30 (31, 32, 33) sts. Work even until armhole measures 6½ (7, 7½, 8), ending with a WS row. Shape left back neck and shoulder: Row 1 (RS): K5 and place these 5 sts on a holder, BO next 8 sts, knit to last 4 (5, 5, 5) sts, w&t 17 (18, 19, 20) sts. Row 2 (WS): Purl. Row 3: BO 5 sts, knit to last 8 (8, 8, 10) sts, w&t 12 (13, 14, 15) sts remaining. Row 4: Purl. Row 5: Knit to end, hiding wraps. Row 6: Purl. Break yarn leaving a tail 3-4 times the width of shoulder, and place sts on holder. 5 RIGHT BACK Return 32 (34, 37, 38) held right back sts to larger circular needle, and rejoin yarn with WS facing. Note: As you proceed, work a buttonhole opposite the marked button positions on the left back. Compare the right and left back frequently so you do not accidentally work past a buttonhole position. Decrease row (WS): Work in pattern to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1 1 st decreased. Decrease row (RS): K1, k2tog, work in pattern to end 1 st decreased. Keeping 5 sts at center back edge in garter st, repeat the RS decrease row on next 0 (1, 3, 3) RS row(s) 30 (31, 32, 33) sts. Work even until armhole measures 6½ (7, 7½, 8), ending with a WS row. Shape right back neck and shoulder: Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): K5 and place these 5 sts on a holder, BO next 8 sts, purl to last 4 (5, 5, 5) sts, w&t 17 (18, 19, 20) sts. Row 3: Knit. Row 4: BO 5 sts, purl to last 8 (8, 8, 10) sts, w&t 12 (13, 14, 15) sts remaining. Row 5: Knit. Row 6: Purl to end, hiding wraps. Leave sts on needle and do not break yarn. Neckband: Place 5 held button band sts on smaller circular needle, and join yarn with RS facing after these sts, pick up and knit 17 sts along left back neck to shoulder join, 10 (12, 14, 16) sts along left front neck, 17 sts across center front, 10 (12, 14, 16) sts along right front neck to shoulder seam, 17 sts along right back neck, then knit across 5 held buttonhole band sts 81 (85, 89, 93) sts. Knit 2 rows, ending with a RS row. BO all sts knitwise with WS facing. Armhole edging: With RS facing and smaller circular needle, beg in center of underarm, pick up and knit 72 (78, 86, 94) sts evenly around armhole opening. Join to work in the round, and place a marker for beginning of the round. Purl 1 round, then knit 1 round. BO all sts purlwise. Repeat for other armhole. Sew CO edge of button band invisibly to WS of buttonhole band. Weave in ends. Sew buttons to left back opposite buttonholes. FINISHING Join shoulders: Place 12 (13, 14, 15) held right front shoulder sts on smaller circular needle. Hold needles together with RS of front and back touching, and use the tip of the larger needle to join the sts using the three needle bind-off method. Repeat for left shoulder, using the long tail attached to the left back sts to bind off. Block to measurements. All rights reserved. 6 STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS Stockinette In rows: Knit on the RS, purl on WS. In the round: Knit all sts, every round. Garter Stitch In rows: Knit all sts, every row. In the round: *Knit 1 round, then purl 1 round; repeat the last 2 rounds for pattern. Wrap and Turn: Knit row or stitch With yarn in back, slip next st purlwise onto RH needle, bring yarn to front of work, return slipped st to LH needle, bring yarn to back of work, then turn work. Purl row or stitch With yarn in front, slip next st purlwise onto RH needle, bring yarn to back of work, return slipped st to LH needle, bring yarn to front of work, then turn work. Hide Wraps: Knit row or stitch Insert RH needle tip from front to back into wrap and knit it together with the wrapped st. Purl row Insert RH needle tip from back to front into wrap and lift it onto LH needle, then purl it together with the wrapped st. Cable Cast-on: If there are no sts on the LH needle yet, place a slipknot on LH needle. Work k1 into the first st or slipknot on LH needle, slip new st onto LH needle; *insert RH needle between first 2 sts on LH needle, k1 from this position, leave the first st on LH needle and slip new st onto LH needle. Repeat from * for desired number of sts. Buttonhole (worked on left back): On a RS row, knit to last 5 sts, k1, k2tog, yo, k2. Three Needle Bind-off: Place the sts to be joined on 2 separate needles. With the RS of garment pieces together (to form ridge on inside of garment), hold the needles parallel.
