1 Get ready for Halloween with these scarey knits by Ashley Wood for cosy kids Keep little ones warm this winter with these snuggly accessories designed by Dorothy wood Bumper section Wrap her up in this skinny scarf she'll feel as snug as a bug! 1 Scarf Yarn 1 x 50g ball of Bergère de France Sport in each of the following shades: Naturel (shade 27166), Wasabi (shade 22133), Kraft (shade 21120) and Pimpernelle (shade 20359) Needles 4.5mm (UK size 9) knitting is not important for this project 138x10cm or 54 1 /4x4in SCARF Using Pimpernelle, cast on 24sts. Knit 5cm or 2in in K1, P1 rib. Knit one row, continue in st st as follows: Change to Wasabi, work eight rows. Change to Pimpernelle, work three rows. Change to Wasabi, work five rows. Change to Pimpernelle, work nine rows. Change to Wasabi, work three rows. Change to Pimpernelle, work five rows. Repeat these 15 rows until the scarf is length required, ending on a band of Pimpernelle. Knit one row of Wasabi. Knit 5cm or 2in in K1, P1 rib. Cast off and sew in yarn ends. 3 3 Mittens Yarn 1 x 50g ball of Bergère de France Sport in each of the following shades: Azalee (shade 20760), Tatou (shade 24458), Campeche (shade 22342) and Gallium (shade 20802) Needles 4 x 3.25mm (UK size 10) doublepointed is not important for this project 19cm or 7 1 /2in from cuff to tip right mitten In Azalee, cast on 36sts using the two needle cast on method and divide the stitches between three dpns, keeping the back of the cast on edge to the outside. Knit 16 rounds in K1, P1 rib using the tail as a guide for the beginning of the round. SHAPE THUMB GUSSET Change to Tatou but knit every fifth round in Campeche marked with *. Round 17: K1, P1, K3, P1, K to end of round. Round 18 and 19: As round 17. Round 20: K1, P1, inc in next stitch, K1, inc in Round 21*: K1, P1, K5, P1, K to end of round. Round 22: As round 21. Round 23: K1, P1, inc in next stitch, K3, inc in Round 24: K1, P1, K7, P1, K to end of round. Round 25: As round 24. Round 26*: K1, P1, inc in next stitch, K5, inc in Round 27: K1, P1, K9, P1, K to end of round. Round 28: As round 27. K to end of round. Rounds 33-52: For the next 19 rounds work in stocking stitch, adding Campeche every fifth row. SHAPE TOP Round 53-55: Change to Gallium and K three rounds. Round 56: (K2tog, K4) six times. Rounds 57-58: Knit. Round 59: (K2tog, K3) six times. Round 60: Knit. Round 61: (K2tog, K2) six times. Round 62: Knit. Round 63: (K2tog, K1) six times. Round 64: (K2tog) six times. Break the yarn and thread through the remaining 6sts. Pull up and sew in the end. LEFT MITTEN This mitten can be knitted the same way as for the right mitten and simply blocked to create a left and right mitt. Otherwise, change where the gusset lies as follows: Knit these marvellous mittens and wave goodbye to chilly fingers Work as right mitt but in Gallium for 16 rounds. Continue partway into round 17 in Gallium as follows: Round 17: K13, P1, K3, P1, K1, add a marker to indicate the new start of round and change to Tatou. Round 18: K30, P1, K3, P1, K1. Round 19: As round 18. Continue with gusset instructions to round 31, knitting 30sts rather than one at the beginning of each round. Round 32: K32, place the next 11sts on a holder. Starting at the left side and working across the forehead and around the back of the head, work in st st throughout, with g st edge as follows: Row 1: Knit. Row 2: K3, P to last 3sts, K3. Pattern: Six rows Kraft and then two rows in Cagou. Repeat four times and then work another three rows in Kraft. Next row (RS): Knit to last 4sts. Knit into front and back of next stitch, K3. Next row (WS): K3, P to last 3sts, K3. back section Change pattern to four rows Cagou, two rows Kraft, four rows Feuillage and two Kraft. Working in the new colour pattern, repeat the last two rows until there are 32sts. On the next two RS rows inc as before and at the same time dec at the beginning as follows: K3, skpo. 32sts. Dec at the end of the next four rows. 28sts. Continue decreasing on this edge on every right side row to 23sts. Work straight for 16 rows. Increase again for the next three rows, then alt rows (every RS) until 32sts. On the next two RS rows increase as before and at the same time decrease at the beginning as follows: K3, skpo. 32sts. Dec on the next four rows, 28sts, then every RS row to 19sts. Work two rows straight with Kraft. Cast off knitwise on the WS. Press. Sew together with edge to edge stitch. Weave in loose ends. 5 5 Snood Yarn 1 x 50g ball of Bergère de France Sport in each of the following shades: Naturel (shade 27166), Azalee (shade 20760), Wasabi (shade 22133) and a short length of Pimpernelle (shade 20359) Needles 5.5mm (UK size 5) and 6mm (UK size 4) knitting Other Three toggles or buttons is not important for this project 53x16cm or 21x6 1 /4in GIRL S SNOOD Fasten the snood with buttons the brighter the better! Work with two strands of yarn throughout. Using 5.5mm and two strands of Naturel, cast on 26sts. Row 1: K2, (P2, K2) rep to end. Row 2: P2, (K2, P2) rep to end. Row 3 (buttonhole row): K2, P2, yf, k2tog, (P2, K2, P2, yf, k2tog) twice, rib to end. Row 4: As row 2. Row 5: As row 1. Row 6: As row 2, making 1st on the first stitch. 27sts. Row 7: Working in st st, K one row with two strands of Pimpernelle. Contrast dark yarn, stranding Naturel loosely along on the reverse side for 18sts. Row 8: Begin to knit the different colour bands for plaiting. You can either knit each 9st strip one at a time or knit all at once on the same, changing yarns as required. Using two strands, P9 in Azalee, P9 in Naturel and P9 in Wasabi. Change to 6mm. Continue in st st until work measures 50cm or 19 3 /4in from cast on edge. Put each colour strip onto a stitch holder. Block the st st strips (they will have curled at the edges). Plait loosely and place the stitches onto a 5.5mm needle. K one row with two strands of Pimpernelle. P one row with Naturel decreasing 1st on this row. 26sts. Work six rows in K2, P2 rib as before. Cast off in rib. Sew through in a few places, and at the back where the pieces cross, to avoid any loops forming. Weave in all the loose ends and then sew on the toggles or buttons. 6 Girl's ear warmers Yarn 1 x 50g ball of Bergère de France Sport in each of the following shades: Naturel (shade 27166), Pimpernelle (shade 20359) and Azalee (shade 20760) Small piece of Gallium Needles 3.5mm (UK size 9) knitting Other Three buttons is not important for this project 48cm or 19in circumference GIRL S EAR WARMERS Starting at the centre back, with Naturel and 3.5mm, cast on 21sts. Row 1: K1 (P1, K1) rep to end. Row 2: P1 (K1, P1) rep to end. Continue in rib for 6cm or 2 1 /2in, ending with a WS row. Now working in st st, K one row with Gallium. P one row in Pimpernelle. *Continue with Pimpernelle in st st with a moss st edging: P1, K1, P1, st st to last 3sts, P1, K1, P1. Repeat moss stitch edges on every row. Increase on every row to 35sts. Increase as follows: RS row: Moss stitch 3, K into front and back of next st, K to last 4sts. Increase on next stitch, moss stitch 3. On WS rows inc purlwise and P between the 3 moss stitches at either end. Work three rows straight. Dec on every row to 21sts. Dec as follows: RS row: Moss stitch 3, skpo, K to last 5sts, k2tog, moss stitch 3. On a WS row: moss stitch 3, p2tog, P to last 5sts, p2tog tbl, moss stitch 3. Work one row without decreasing. Dec again to 19sts. Top section Work in st st with moss st edge alternately in two rows Azalee, four rows Pimpernelle until the work measures 33cm or 13in from the cast on edge. Work from the * again to create a second ear warmer section in Pimpernelle, increasing then decreasing in the same way, to 21sts. Work three rows straight. Work one row with contrasting yarn. Rib for 6cm or 2 1 /2in as before and cast off knitwise on the WS. Press the stocking stitch section. Sew the edges together with an edge to edge stitch. Weave in the loose ends. Cut four 6cm or 2 1 /2in circles from stiff card and cut 1.5cm circles in the middle. Using two together, wrap with mainly Azalee, but add some Pimpernelle and Naturel yarn to make two pom-poms. Cut around the edge, tie with yarn between the card circles, tear off the card and fluff up. Sew the pom-poms to the centre of the ear warmer sections. n Pom-poms will make her stand out from the crowd on the slopes and in the playground! January 2012 knit-today.com 49
