Mittens: 8" (19 cm) palm cir. with 1" (2.5 cm) negative ease. Finished Measurements: Hat: 20" (51 cm) cir. x 9" (22 cm) long Mittens: 7" (18 cm) palm cir. x 10" (25.5 cm) long Materials: Cascade Yarns Cherub DK 55% Nylon / 45% Acrylic 50 g (1.75 oz)/ 180 yds (165 m) 2 skeins in color #17 Grey (MC) 1 skein in color #23 Spruce (CC) for set. US 4 (3.5 mm)/16 (40.5 cm) Circular Needles and 1 set of DPNs; or two sizes smaller than larger needles. US 6 (4 mm)/16" (40.5 cm) Circular Needles and 1 set of 5 DPNs; or size to obtain gauge. Yarn Needle 8 Stitch Markers (1 in an alternate color to mark the beginning of the rnd) 1 Stitch Holder or scrap yarn (mitten) Gauge: 24 sts x 30 rnds = 4" (10 cm) blocked, in Duomo Stitch Pattern with larger needles 24 sts x 30 rnds = 4" (10 cm) blocked, in Stockinette stitch with larger needles To save time, take time to check gauge. Notes: Slip sts purl-wise with yarn in back. At each color change between rnds, bring the new color under the old color to prevent holes from forming. Repeat Rnds 1-9 for pattern. Hat: Brim: With MC and smaller circular needles, loosely CO 120 sts using the long tail CO method. Join in the rnd, being careful not to twist work. PM Rnd 1: *[P1, K1tbl]; repeat from * to end. Repeat this rnd until brim measures 1½" (4 cm). Body: Switch to larger circular needles. Work in Duomo Stripe Pattern for 32 rnds, ending with Rnd 5 of pattern. Break CC yarn. Note: To add length to the hat, continue in Duomo Stripe Pattern until 3¼ (8 cm) less than desired length of hat. Crown Shaping: Change to larger DPNs when needed for knitting a small circumference. Set up Rnd: With MC, (K15, PM) 8 times. Rnd 1: Knit. Rnd 2: (Knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, SM) 8 times. 8 sts decreased, 112 sts remain. Repeat Rnds 1 & 2 eleven more times sts remain. Next Rnd: (K2tog) 12 times sts remain. Final Rnd: (K2tog) 6 times. - 6 sts remain.

4 Mittens: Cuff: With MC and smaller DPNs, CO 42 sts and divide evenly over 3 DPNs. Join in the rnd, being careful not to twist work. PM Rnd 1: *[P1, K1tbl]; repeat from * to end. Repeat this rnd until cuff measures 3" (7.5 cm). Lower Mitten: Switch to larger DPNs. Work in Duomo Stripe Pattern for 3 rnds, ending with Rnd 3 of pattern. Thumb Gusset: Rnd 1: With MC, K18, PM, M1L, PM, knit to end sts. Rnd 2: With MC, Sl1, knit to end. Rnd 3: With CC, K3, *[Sl1, K5]; repeat from * to 3 sts before marker, Sl1, K2, SM, M1L, knit to next marker, M1R, SM, K3, **[Sl1, K5]; repeat from ** to last 3 sts, Sl1, K sts. Rnd 4: With MC, knit. Rnd 5: With MC, Sl1, knit to marker, SM, M1L knit to next marker, M1R, SM, knit to end sts. Upper Mitten: Continue Duomo Stripe pattern with Rnd 3. Work in Duomo Stripe Pattern for 18 rnds, ending with Rnd 2 of pattern. Break CC. With MC, knit 8 rnds. Note: To add length to mitten, continue to knit with MC yarn until 1 (2.5 cm) less than desired length of mitten. Top Shaping: Rnd 1: With MC, (K7, PM) 5 times, K7.

5 Rnd 2: (Knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog, SM) 6 times. - 6 sts decreased, 36 sts remain. Rnd 3: Knit. Repeat Rnds 2 & 3 two more times sts remain. Next Rnd: Repeat Rnd 2-18 sts remain. Remove markers. Final Rnd: (K2tog) 9 times. - 9 sts remain. Thumb: With size US 6 (4 mm) DPNs, Sl thumb sts from scrap yarn or stitch holder and distribute over 2 needles. Then with third needle pick up 2 sts across gap sts. Begin a new ball of yarn, and leave 6 (15 cm) tail. Set up Rnd: K15, K2tog sts remain. Knit 14 rnds, or desired length for thumb. Next Rnd: (K2tog) 8 times. - 8 sts remain. Final Rnd: (K2tog) 4 times. - 4 sts remain. Repeat instructions for second mitten. Finishing: Weave in ends and block lightly to finished measurements. Use the yarn tail at the base of the thumb to weave tog gaps at bottom of thumb.
