1 Hallelujah Hat Pattern by Dori Harrell Don t you just love Piper s hat? I do too, so I thought, why not design it for my readers who knit? And I did! I ve tested the pattern, and it looks great, with and without a pom-pom. But should you notice an error in the pattern, please contact me (dori@doriharrell.com), and I ll update and send you the new file in a PDF format. Send me photos of you in your hat! I ll post them on my website (doriharrell.com). Note For this pattern, you will be placing markers and decreasing between one set and increasing between the other set for the first part of the crown. I recommend using different-color markers for the decreasing set and the increasing set, as well as a third color for the marker that begins the round. For the purpose of this pattern, I used green as the decreasing set and purple as the increasing set. The joining marker is red. You, or course, may use any colors you prefer. Supplies 3.5 oz (104 yards) bulky weight alpaca-blend yarn (I used Snuggle). That amount will knit up one hat, but an additional amount may be needed for a pom-pom.

Size 10 circular needle (16 in.) 5 size 10 dpns 8 green markers (or your color preference) 8 purple markers (or your color preference) 1 red marker (or your color preference) joining marker Glossary of Terms Used co cast on dec decrease dpn(s) double-pointed needle(s) in. inch inc increase k knit k2tog knit 2 together (left-leaning decrease) make1l make 1 left (left-leaning increase) Pick up bar between the stitch you just knit and the one you re about to knit, bringing needle from front to back. Knit into the back of the new stitch. m1r make 1 right (right-leaning increase) Pick up bar between the stitch you just knit and the one you re about to knit, bringing the needle from back to front. Knit into the front of the new stich. Here s a great link with a videos for m1l and m1r: pm place marker p purl rm remove marker sm slip marker ssk slip, slip, knit (right-leaning decrease) sts stitches Ribbing On size 8 circular needle (16 in.), CO 74 sts. Place red marker. Join, being sure sts are not twisted.
3 K1, p1 for 2 in. (2.5 in or 3 in if you prefer a wider brim. I did my ribbing to 3 in., as I like to fold mine up a bit.) Crown Switch to size 10 needles. You will place markers on the first round. In addition, dec 2 sts evenly on the first round, making sure you have the appropriate number of sts between markers. (You still have 72 sts on your needles). Then knit even in established pattern, but with no decreases or increases between markers, until piece measures 7 in. from bottom.
