3 YARN 101 * TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES Trying to decide which fiber to use? Wondering how fast a certain yarn might start to pill? Not sure how to substitute a yarn and get the right gauge for a pattern? This lecture-style class will explore the wide world of yarn, and will cover how yarns are made and structured, the different fibers used and their unique properties, and how these factors combine to influence your finished fabrics. Learn how to choose the perfect yarn for all your projects and how to care for them for years of enjoyment. Skill Level: Beginner Tuition: $50 Instructor: Ashley Flagg Saturday, February 25 TWO DAYS OF DYEING WITH THE KANGAROO DYER* 11:00am-4:00pm In this two-day dyeing class, students will explore all aspects of color before diving in and getting into the dye pot. Many factors affect color on fiber: the spin of the yarn, the fiber content, and the type of fiber. We'll start with a tour of the warehouse and discuss different types of yarn and suggest how they would take color. Using only red, yellow, and blue dyes, students will leave the clas with small skeins of 36 colors all made from these three primary colors. We'll also talk about how to change the color of yarn that has already been dyed, whether it is a commercially dyed yarn or a hand-dyed one. There are always ways to resurrect a beautiful yarn in an ugly color. **Required Text: The Color Grid by Gail Callahan Skill Level: All Tuition: $100 Instructor: Gail Callahan Saturday and Sunday, 2/18, 2/19 9:00am 3:00pm GENERAL INFORMATION Tuition, Registration and Fees For all classes, payment of full tuition is due at time of registration. Please plan approximately 4 hours a week for homework in addition to class time. WEBS will provide, for a rental fee, portable 4-shaft floor looms for students to use both at home and in class. Students will complete three projects and will learn the basics of planning projects and appropriate yarns. There is a $40.00 materials fee included in the class price. As twills are the foundation for many multi-shaft weave structures, we will weave a gamp (sampler) that includes straight twills, point twills, broken twills, undulating twills, corkscrew twills, fancy twills, and others. We will discuss the structure of each of these basic weaves, do drawdowns, and learn how to alter the appearance of a cloth by changing the tie-up and treadling sequences. Your gamp will serve as a library of twill weaves that can be referred back to many times. Weaving will be done outside of class. Please note: The weave structures taught in this class are meant to be worked on 8-shaft looms. They cannot be woven on 4-shaft or rigid heddle looms. WEBS EXPERT KNITTER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM What is an Expert Knitter? An Expert Knitter needs only yarn, needles and measurements to construct hats, mittens, socks, and sweaters of various types. An Expert Knitter has acquired the knowledge to master additional techniques independently. In addition to our regular class offerings, WEBS has developed a program leading to certification as a WEBS Expert Knitter. Our goal is to provide our students with the skills an Expert Knitter must possess by means of a varied, interesting, and comprehensive curriculum. We have designated a total of sixteen classes as Core Requirements. There will also be three required electives, one in knitting and one in each of two other disciplines such as crochet, weaving, spinning, etc. A Capstone Project will be the culmination of the program for students. This project will require students to utilize the skills they have learned to design, knit and finish an original sweater for themselves from measurements. Students will be assigned a mentor for support, consultation and advice. The project will be reviewed by a committee, and, if accepted, the WEBS Expert Knitter Certificate will be awarded. A yearly fee of $75.00 is the only additional charge for participation in the program over and above the usual course and materials fees. For further information, please contact Amy Greeman at , ext. 120 or via at agreeman@yarn.com. Skill Level: Advanced Beginner. Must have the ability to wind a warp, dress a loom, and read a draft Instructor: Carol Birtwistle Saturdays, 3/18, 4/1, 4/15 Tuition: $100 9:00am 12:00pm In this booklet, a single asterisk (*) denotes classes that fulfill WEBS Expert Knitter Certification Program Core Requirements. All other fiber classes may be used to fill an Elective. 30 7

Worn by the common folk and elite as well, these hand garments required skill and an understanding of the geometry of the design. The cuff is worked in two parts: first a corrugated ribbing is made where the knit ribs are one color while the purl ribs are a second color. The second part of the cuff is made with a simple "Salt and Pepper" motif that allows for optional initials and/or the year to be knitted in. The hand is full of small patterns and tiny gussets around the fingers and thumb. The tips of the three-sided fingers are finished off in little pyramids. These gloves can be worked on double-pointed needles, or using the Magic Loop or two circular needles, if preferred. In this class, learn how to design this type of glove to fit your hand and explore the many pattern options of both the ribbing and glove body. You will have several motifs to choose from, depending on your chosen size and gauge. Over the length of the workshop, a full-sized glove will be knitted. In addition, learn about yarn dominance and how to manage two yarns at a time, in three different knitting styles (two yarns in the right hand, two yarns in the left hand, or a yarn in each hand) as well as reading your knitting, rather than a pattern, to create these marvelous gloves. Skill Level: Advanced Tuition: $225 Instructor: Beth Brown-Reinsel Saturday and Sunday, 1/28, 1/29 9:00am 4:00pm Skill Level: Intermediate Tuition: $120 Instructor: Beth Altimari Tuesdays, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25 6:00pm - 8:00pm 26 11

This style of sweater is not only fun to make, and very comfortable, but it will also reflect your unique style. This sweater must be made for the person knitting it, and the knitter must have a real sense of adventure. *Required Text: Knitting from The Top by Barbara Walker (15% discount). 13 OH, YOUR ACHING BACK (NECK, SHOULDERS, HANDS ) HOW ABOUT A CURE FOR YOUR KNITTING ACHES AND PAINS? CARSON DEMERS BRINGS HIS ERGONOMIC GENIUS TO WEBS KNITTING HAPPILY EVER AFTER: ERGONOMICS FOR KNITTERS Ever known a knitter who hasn't said, "just one more row "? Nope! Those knitters also complain of aches and pains while knitting. In this class, knitters will learn how knitting affects the "fabric that makes the fabric" the body. Students will see how their knitting technique impacts efficiency and productivity. By completing a Risk of Injury assessment in class, students will learn how knitting contributes to those aches and pains, and more importantly, how to reduce them. A few simple changes along with the knowledge gained in class will keep knitters stitching comfortably and safely ever after. Instructor: Carson Demers Skill Level: All Saturday, May 6 SWATCHBUCKLING Tuition: $100 9:00am 12:00pm Bring improved ergonomics to life in your knitting technique. Students will swatch to improve posture, comfort, and efficiency while knitting. Carson will work with knitters to examine yarn tensioning techniques, and all phases of stitch creation first with simple, and then more challenging swatches and stitches. Students will also look at ways to add movement to knitting to avoid stiffness and injury caused by disuse. Class is appropriate for students who are comfortable with basic knit-and-purl stitches. Swatches of basic cable and lace patterns are also made in class. Stitch patterns are provided in both written and charted form. Instructor: Carson Demers Skill Level: All Saturday, May 6 Tuition: $100 1:30pm 4:30pm SMALL GROUP MINI-CONSULTATION ON PERSONAL KNITTING ERGONOMICS Ever feel aches and pains after or during knitting? This small group setting is an opportunity for knitters to receive direct feedback about their knitting ergonomics and personal habits that create a risk of injury. Knitters learn how to identify and reduce the risk of injury and discomfort through working individual analyses with Carson and observing others do the same. A short questionnaire will be given to students before class to aid in the analysis. ADVANCED FEARLESS FINISHING* Advanced Fearless Finishing will make sure you are ready to take the next step in finessing your finishing techniques, enabling you to forge on to pockets, zippers, steeks, facings and edging options. We'll experiment by making samplers to learn techniques and design choices you can use in designing pieces and finishing your work. Be prepared for homework between classes - your hard work will be rewarded when you apply these techniques to your future knitted garments for a professional-looking finish. In order to take this class, you will need the following skills as well as the prerequisite classes: Picking up stitches (horizontal, vertical, and at an angle), knitting in the round on circular and double-pointed needles with one and two colors, experience with the following crochet stitches: slip stitch and single crochet, hand sewing on knitted and fabric projects including mattress stitch and whip stitch on knits, picking up dropped stitches with a crochet hook, and sewing in ends on knitted projects. There is one required text (Cast On, Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor, 15% discount), and several recommended texts for this class. Please check the website or call Customer Service to make sure you purchase the correct books. Skill Level: Advanced Prerequisite: First Sweater and Fearless Finishing Instructor: Cyndi Shepard Saturday, 4/1, 4/15, 4/29, 5/13 KEEPING WARM WITH ENTRELAC Tuition: $120 10:30am-1:30pm Entrelac creates an attractive and intriguing fabric that looks impressive and is easy to master. In this class, students will learn how to form and work with each of the shapes that fit together to create a beautiful scarf knit flat and a hat that is knit in the round. Techniques covered include understanding the jigsaw-puzzle-like components (diamonds, rectangles) that fit together to create entrelac, learning how to connect each shape as it is knit, and how to create different looks by using either a solid color, a long-repeat variegated yarn, or multiple solid colors. IMPROVE YOUR KNITTING TECHNIQUE We know how to knit, but do we know how to build a perfect fabric? There's always room for improvement! What about alternative ways to tension your yarn when working with a stiff or slippery fiber? We'll explore ways to improve your knitting technique by looking at the most important fundamentals, like the job of the left needle tip and the right needle shaft, stitch sizing, and even the correct exit path of your stitch. We will explore edge stitches, cast on and bind offs, and a huge array of knitting tips. The last part of class will be open for all knitting questions (that you've put in the "bag of why"), so come with your questions and let's explore our knitting. Students will dissect the elements of a properly knit gauge swatch including stitch count, row count, needle size, and fiber content. Most importantly, you'll become much more in tune with your knitting. In addition, the class will discuss the best gauge for various kinds of knitted garments, accessories, and home goods. 17 **FAIR ISLE SWEATER FOR WEKP GRADUATES** The history of Fair Isle knitting goes back at least to the early 1800's, originating in the Scottish Shetland Islands. The technique of colorful stranded knitting, never with more than two colors in a row, results in incredibly intricate patterns that are now copied the world over. This course will go deeply into this traditional art, focusing on color selection and progression, two-handed knitting, and the history of Fair Isle patterning. If you like a little culture with your knitting, or love stranded colorwork, join us! You will create your own adult-sized Fair Isle sweater, 1) knitting a sweater exactly as written (colors and everything) from the instructors pattern; 2) using the provided pattern and your own color inspiration; OR 3) creating your own entirely original Fair Isle sweater. Your sweater will include knitting in double-pointed needles at a small gauge, so you must be proficient with DPNs. Required text: Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting by Alice Starmore (15% discount); recommended text: 200 Fair Isle Motifs: A Knitter's Directory, by Mary Jane Mucklestone. Skill Level: Advanced: Prerequisite: This class is only open to graduates of the WEKP. You must be comfortable with basic stranded knitting. A CORNUCOPIA OF CAST-ONS AND A BEVY OF BIND-OFFS* Do you always use the same cast-ons and bind-offs for everything you knit? Here at WEBS, we insist that everyone know the long-tail cast-on and the traditional bind-off, but there is a world of other methods out there which can make your knitted items look very professional indeed: tubular cast-on and bind-off (including Kitchener stitch bind-off, or grafting), knitted cast-on, cable cast-on, picot cast-on and bind-off, chained cast-on, provisional caston, knit 2 together bind-off, purl 2 together bind-off, I-cord bind-off, yarnover bind-off, and 3-needle bind-off, just to name a few. If you'd like to add more style to your knitting, come join us for this class. **Required Text: Cast On, Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor. Skill Level: Intermediate Instructor: Katie Carr Mondays, 3/20, 3/27 Tuition: $50 5:30pm 8:00pm Instructor: Erin Holman Wednesdays, 1/25, 2/8, 3/1, 4/12, 5/10, 6/14 Tuition: $180 6:00pm 9:00pm PERFECT TOP-DOWN SOCKS, EVERY TIME! DOMINO MARKET BAG This intriguing and functional bag is made by joining incomplete mitered squares to form domino-shaped cut-outs in the fabric. Sure to turn heads, it's made with linen to produce a strong and sturdy fabric that looks just beautiful. Students will learn the intricacies of casting on and making these mitered squares and the negative-space diamonds that give the bag its net -like texture. By the time farmers' markets start to spring up, students will have a reusable bag for produce, flowers, and other home-grown goodies. Skill Level: Advanced Beginner Instructor: Beth Altimari Wednesdays, 2/1, 2/15, 3/8, 3/29 10:30am 12:30pm Top-down socks are not only fun to knit, but offer several advantages to the knitter: it's easy to try it on as you knit to ensure a well-fitted calf, and to gauge the length of the foot from the heel. Learn how to knit a perfect top-down sock every time from measurements with a few simple calculations. Starting with a great cast-on technique for stretchy ribbing, students will learn how to knit to measurements, how to turn a heel and fit a perfect foot, and finally, conquer Kitchener stitch! You must be able to knit competently on double-pointed needles for success in this class.
