WEBS EXPERT KNITTER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM What is an Expert Knitter? An Expert Knitter needs only yarn, needles and measurements to construct hats, mittens, socks, and sweaters of various types. An Expert Knitter has acquired the knowledge to master additional techniques independently. In addition to our regular class offerings, WEBS has developed a program leading to certification as a WEBS Expert Knitter. Our goal is to provide our students with the skills an Expert Knitter must possess by means of a varied, interesting, and comprehensive curriculum. We have designated a total of sixteen classes as Core Requirements. There will also be three required electives, one in knitting and one in each of two other disciplines such as crochet, weaving, or spinning. A Capstone Project is the culmination of the program. This project will require students to utilize the skills they have learned to design, knit, and finish an original sweater for themselves from measurements. Students will be assigned a mentor for support, consultation, and advice. A committee will review candidates sweaters, and successful candidates will receive the WEBS Expert Knitter Certificate. A yearly fee of $75.00 is the only additional charge for participation in the program over and above the usual course and materials fees. For further information, please contact Amy Greeman at , ext. 129 or via at agreeman@yarn.com. Take advantage of our everyday savings! Save 20% on combined yarn/fiber and book purchases of $60! Save 25% on purchases of $120 or more! In this booklet, a single asterisk (*) denotes classes that fulfill WEBS Expert Knitter Certification Program Core Requirements. All other fiber classes may be used to fill an Elective. 7 8

5 Knitting I SECTION 1 SECTION 2 This class is intended for those who have never knit before. First-time knitters will learn a variety of basic techniques: the long-tail cast-on, knit, and purl stitches, and the basic bind off. The most important topic covered is gauge: what it is and how to make a gauge swatch. Other topics include yarn weights and corresponding needle sizes, the importance of reading and understanding the ball band, and fixing mistakes. You'll receive a skein of yarn and a set of needles to get you started, and the handbook for the class (to be given to students at the first class session) will be invaluable to you during the class and afterward. Instructor: Beth Altimari Tuesdays, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31 Instructor: Anna Viadero Tuesdays, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21 Knitting II* Tuition: $70 10:30am 12:30pm Have you completed Knitting I? Are you a self-taught knitter who wants to fine-tune your knitting skills so you can move on to more advanced techniques and projects? Are you returning to knitting after a hiatus of a year or more? If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then Knitting II is for you. In this class we will briefly review the basics of knit and purl, cast-on, and bind-off and quickly concentrate on knitting in the round on both circular and double-pointed needles. Students will learn to shape fabric with increases and decreases, and gauge, as always, takes center stage. Required text: The Knitter's Companion, by Vicki Square (15% discount) Prerequisite: Knitting I or equivalent SECTION 1 Instructor: Cyndi Shepard Mondays, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20 SECTION 2 Instructor: Beth Altimari KNITTING Tuesdays, 11/14, 11/21, 11/28, 12/5, 12/12, 12/19 Tuition: $70 10:30am 12:30pm 9 KNITTING REFRESHER A CORNUCOPIA OF CAST-ONS AND A BEVY OF BIND-OFFS* 10 This is a class for people who used to knit but haven t in some time, and now want to return to the pleasure of knitting. In two 3-hour classes we will review all the basics; knit, purl, garter stitch, stockinette stitch, casting on, binding off, ribbing, increasing and decreasing, sewing in ends, reading your work, fixing common errors, measuring gauge, using patterns, blocking, and fabric care. This is a fast paced class revisiting a lot of information in a short amount of time. A small amount of homework will be required for week 2. Note: If you are new to knitting, do not sign up for this class. Please consider Knitting I or Knitting II to begin a positive knitting experience. Instructor: Beth Altimari Tuesdays, 11/28, 12/5 Do you always use the same cast-ons and bind-offs for everything you knit? Here at WEBS, we insist that everyone know the long-tail cast-on and the traditional bind-off, but there is a world of other methods out there that can make your knitted items look very professional indeed: tubular cast-on and bind-off (including Kitchener stitch bind-off, or grafting), knitted cast-on, cable cast-on, picot cast-on and bind-off, chained cast-on, provisional cast -on, knit 2 together bind-off, purl 2 together bind-off, I-cord bind-off, yarnover bind-off, and 3-needle bind-off, just to name a few. If you'd like to add more style to your knitting, come join us for this class. **Required Text: Cast On, Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor. 6 SWATCHING FOR SUCCESS A gauge swatch will tell you everything you need to know about the final outcome of the hours you'll spend with some beautiful yarn and your favorite needles. Swatching for Success will help you find out why that's true! In spite of all the information your gauge swatch imparts, many knitters skip this vital step, to the detriment of their project's fit and feel. Students will dissect the elements of a properly knit gauge swatch, including stitch count, row count, needle size, and fiber content. Most importantly, you'll become much more in tune with your knitting. In addition, the class will discuss the best gauge for various kinds of knitted garments, accessories, and home goods. Your knitting wants you to take this class! Skill Level: All Instructor: Elizabeth Decker SECTION 1 Tuesday, 10/3/2017 SECTION 2 Tuesday, 11/14/2017 Tuition: $20 AFGHAN CLASS This technique-heavy class will get you started on a gorgeous afghan, with squares designed by 24 of today's most exciting designers. Students may work on additional squares on their own. Expand your knitting repertoire and make a beautiful project to keep or give to a cherished friend or family member. *Required Text: The Great North American Afghan (revised edition), PDF download. 7 PERFECTING YOUR LACE KNITTING Intimidated by lace? Intrigued by the beautiful appearance and wearability of lace shawls? Perfecting Your Lace Knitting will get you past your preconceived notions that lace is incredibly difficult or only for very experienced knitters. The Magda Shawl is knit in a graceful leaf and vine lace pattern as a large rectangle. The shawl is knit in two pieces, and then joined with a narrow band of perpendicular stockinette stitch, making it the ideal teaching tool for learning skills including following lace charts, doing a stretchy cast-on, executing five different decrease stitches, recognizing various stitches as they are made (reading your work), joining two halves, and blocking with blocking wires. You do not need to have knitted lace before taking this class! Make a beautiful work of knitted art. *Required Text: Valley Yarns Pattern #693, The Magda Shawl (15% discount). FIRST CARDIGAN WITH SET-IN SLEEVES* If you're ready to move beyond the world of scarves to the world of sweaters, this is the class for you. You'll make a basic, worsted-weight V-neck cardigan with set-in sleeves, classic and wearable. The main goal of the class is to teach you how to finish your sweater using horizontal to horizontal, vertical to vertical, and horizontal to vertical seaming techniques. You'll also learn how to do a clean button-band pick-up, one-row button holes, use a button spacing formula, and fit a sleeve into a shoulder. The top-down raglan pullover you knit will be your own design and made to your measurements. There is no pattern, only a formula into which you'll plug your numbers. This style of sweater is not only fun to make, and very comfortable, but it will also reflect your unique style. This sweater must be made for the person knitting it, and the knitter must have a real sense of adventure. *Required Text: Knitting from The Top by Barbara Walker (15% discount). We will work in the round wherever possible, using illustrations and charts from many sources. There will be options for different ribbings and neck opening details. We could also explore shaping and the possibility of using steeks at the armholes and neck. Enjoycreating your own unique design in a supportive atmosphere! 14 INTRODUCTION TO RIGID HEDDLE FLIP LOOM WEAVING In this introductory class we will explore the fundamentals of how to set up and use a Rigid Heddle Flip Loom. We will learn the basics of the plain weave structure by creating a single or multi-colored scarf depending on yarn choice. The Rigid Heddle Flip Loom can accommodate a warp that is 6 yards long, and up to 30 inches wide, which makes it an ideal introductory loom for learning many different weaving techniques. Looms will be provided. Tuition: $75 Instructor: Marthe Young Sunday, 10/22 WEAVING 9:00am 4:30pm ADVANCED-BEGINNER RIGID HEDDLE WEAVING You've taken an introductory rigid heddle loom class now what? There's a world of possibilities! This monthly class will cover topics both general and specific as students practice techniques such as warping with two colors; working with color and weave texture; doing finger manipulation techniques including loops, medallions, hemstitch, and lace;. Students will use pick-up sticks for weft float and warp float techniques such as lace, Inlays, cut weft, honeycomb, and waffle weave; and discuss and practice weft-faced fabric including Ghiordes knots, loops, soumak, krokbragd and clasped weft. Learn to pick yarns that are appropriate for weaving the many techniques covered in class; determine sett, how to achieve a balanced weave structure; and more all with hands-on instruction and handouts. Most of the actual weaving will be done outside of class, so students should already own their rigid heddle flip loom and know how to warp it. Flip or Cricket loom preferred. Prerequisite: Introduction to Rigid Heddle Flip Loom Weaving or equivalent Instructor: Paula Veleta Sundays, 9/24, 10/22, 11/19, 12/17 Tuition: $160 1:00pm 5:00pm THREADING REFRESHER WORKSHOP FOR RIGID HEDDLE WEAVERS You loved Introduction to Rigid Heddle Weaving, but now you're on your own and it's been a while. 15 WEBS IS PLEASED TO WELCOME TAMAR SHADUR INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRY WEAVING An ancient art form dating back to 3,000 BC, tapestry has been recognized as a fine art since the 1400s. For centuries it has been regarded as the noblest form of décor, with historic pieces in museums and galleries showing the rich colors and complex patterns that handweaving can produce. In this introductory class, instructor and artist Tamar Shadur will review the history of the development of ideas and stylistic qualities of tapestry over the centuries as well as discuss technique. Each student will warp a portable upright loom and then experiment with weaving geometric shapes, hatching (blending two color tones), shading methods, interlocking (joining two colors vertically), and other techniques. Students are encouraged to take their looms home to make progress on their tapestries between classes to get used to the motion of the weaving process. 8-HARNESS HUCK DESIGN Huck lace is a fabric of extraordinary richness and diversity, among the most beautiful of all weave structures. Eight-harness huck designs are particularly interesting, allowing weavers to create intricate patterns of circles, diamonds, and other shapes. This three-session workshop will provide an introduction to designing eight-harness huck lace. Participants will design and weave short projects during the period between classes. Students must have access to, and familiarity with, an eight-harness loom in good working order; should understand basic drafting principles; and should feel comfortable designing and weaving 1 3 short projects during the four-week periods between sessions. Instructor: Scott Norris Saturdays, 9/23, 10/21, 11/18 Tuition: $90 10:00am 1:00pm Instructor: Tamar Shadur Tuition: $120 WEEKEND WEAVING Sundays, 11/5, 11/12, 12/3, 12/10 What Is A Tapestry? 1:00pm 4:00pm In the strictest sense of the word, tapestry describes a hand-woven material into which a design is created during the weaving process so that it forms an integral part of the texture. The warp is a skeletal structure in that it disappears completely beneath the weft. The image is made up of numerous discontinuous wefts along each row and the weft threads are woven area by area, shape by shape, as opposed to other woven forms where the weft travels from edge to edge along the width of the warp. Although the imagery and looms have may have changed, the weaving process has remained unchanged. This lively and intensive course is designed as an introduction to the basic techniques of weaving: winding a warp, dressing the loom, and weaving a finished piece. Also included will be an exploration of the basic woven structures plain weave and twills in their many variations designing and drafting a project, and calculating yarn requirements. You will also learn about looms and equipment, yarns, and finishing techniques. Looms are provided. This is a great experience for beginners as well as weavers who would like a refresher. Instructor: Carol Birtwistle Saturdays and Sundays, 10/28, 10/29, 11/4, 11/5 Tuition: $250 9:00am 5:00pm 29 30

16 DYEING & OTHER FIBER ARTS DYEING WITH THE KANGAROO DYER* In this two-day class, students will explore all aspects of color before diving in and getting into the dye pot. Many factors affect color on fiber: the spin of the yarn, the fiber content, and the type of fiber. We'll start with a tour of the warehouse and discuss different types of yarn and suggest how they would take color. Using only red, yellow, and blue dyes, students will leave the class with 36 small individually colored skeins, made from these three primary colors. We'll also talk about how to change the color of yarn that has already been dyed, whether it is commercially dyed or hand-dyed. There are always ways to resurrect a beautiful yarn in an ugly color. **Required Text: The Color Grid by Gail Callahan. Webs - America s Yarn Store 75 Service Center Road Northampton, MA yarn.com Skill Level: All Instructor: Gail Callahan Saturday and Sunday, 11/11, 11/12 YARN 101 * Tuition: $100 9:00am 3:00pm Trying to decide which fiber to use? Wondering how fast a certain yarn might start to pill? Not sure how to substitute a yarn and get the right gauge for a pattern? This lecture-style class will explore the wide world of yarn and will cover how yarns are made and structured, the different fibers used and their unique properties, and how these factors combine to influence your finished fabrics. Learn how to choose the perfect yarn for all your projects and how to care for them for years of enjoyment. Instructor: Ashley Flagg Saturday, 9/23/2017 Tuition: $50 11:00am 4:30pm WOOL 101 In this lecture-style class, students will explore the world of wool; the variety of sheep breeds, and the different kinds of wool they produce; as well as the selection, care, and handling of fleece, yarn, and fabrics.
