I would suggest a Merino or Merino cashmere blend. 1 #4 US knitting needles 1 #E crochet hook 1 cable needle Inspired by Kate Davies Owls and Romi Hill s High Desert patterns, this beautiful half-round, woodsy-themed shawl is a combination of Aran and Lace style stitches. This shawl has three distinct sections, with a smocked horizontal border in between the owls and the feathered, fan-tail edging. I have charted the owl section in two different ways; one using Nupp stitches for eyes, and a plain one for using buttons, sewn on after blocking. Gauge is not super-important as this shawl is only one size. I d recommend this pattern for the intermediate knitter who has experience knitting cable stitches, lace stitches and the ability to work two separate charts at once, without having every stitch charted out. This pattern is a combination of charting and written instructions. You should feel comfortable with being able to pop back and forth between the two. If you re only able to knit from written instructions or from only charts, you ll have a tough time with this pattern. I m sorry I don t have the time available to write up full written instructions and charts for everyone in the pattern. Many, many thanks to Jessica Rao for all of the proof-reading and testknitting she did to make this pattern possible, and to the many nice people on Ravelry who messaged me with their edits. I am definitely NOT a pattern writer, and I doubt this shawl would have been made available to the public, if not for everyone s patience with my pattern writing skills and all of the revisions to correct any errors or confusing directions. This particular shawl is made with Knit Picks Stroll Tweed in the Forest Heather color-way. Be sure to read through this pattern before beginning. I ve created a few notes on areas where I ve noticed people have had struggles, along with links to a few websites where you can learn how to do certain stitches that might be confusing. Feel free to modify the pattern to suit your own knitting style, but please be kind enough not to vent your frustrations when the pattern doesn t come out exactly as shown in these photos. I ve attempted to write what I did to achieve this look, but keep in mind, any changes in stitches, yarn weight or number of repetitions will change how the finished shawl appears Needles n Purls. 2 IMPORTANT NOTES: All wrong side rows are knit the knits, purl the purls and yarn overs, unless otherwise specified. Odd numbered rows on the charts are right side of shawl, even numbered rows are wrong side. The Selvage edge is a 3-stitch, garter stitch edge, knitted as follows for each row: Sl1, K2, knit pattern until last three stitches, K3. Feel free to substitute your favorite edging here, but keep in mind that the cast on, and some of the charts include this 3 stitch edge, so factor that into your change when knitting. The 7/3 stitch may be called something different, but I don t know its proper name. I ve seen it called a Blossom stitch, an Increase 7 - decrease 3 stitch, and a Fleur-de-Lis stitch. I ve just simplified it here by calling it a 7/3 stitch. This stitch is created by knitting 7 stitches into the center loops of 3 stitches. You start by sliding your needle into 3 loops as if to Knit 3 together, but instead you K1, YO, K1, YO, K1, YO, K1 into these same 3 loops, keeping them on the left needle until you knit the last stitch. Here s a video showing how, but keep in mind she s knitting 9 stitches instead of the seven needed for this pattern. The PU stitch is picked up from the row below and knit or purled, depending on which area you are knitting. You should be experienced enough in knitting to be able to tell which is needed. Please look at the Strand Increase(1) section at this link for how-to instructions for this stitch. I use a PU stitch increase because it doesn t leave a hole. If you choose to do a YO, kfb, or a M1 stitch as an increase instead, there will be a difference in appearance to this area. The Nupp stitch for the owl eyes needs to be knit with a very loose tension in order for the eyes to pop out from the cable. Some of this will happen when the shawl is blocked, but for maximum effect, it s best to stretch those 9 stitches to the right, giving a good stitch length as shown in Elizabeth Freeman s Aeolian instructions on Knitty.com. If you tend to knit small, tight Nupp stitches, I d recommend trying a bobble stitch or using beads for the eyes instead. The Seed Stitch owl belly is the center 8 stitches highlighted in yellow in the owl chart. These 8 stitches can be knit a variety of ways. I have chosen to knit them in seed stitch, but they can be knit in a moss stitch, a rib stitch, or just plain stockinette. The choice is yours, just be consistent with what stitch you choose. The Owls will look a bit too long until they are blocked, then they will stretch out and shorten to the correct proportion. I d not recommend shortening the amount of rows in the owl body unless you want to end up with short owls. The Feathered edge chart can be stopped or repeated at any of the heavier, outlined rows (8, 16, 24). You will need to adjust the cable braid stitch closing to allow for wherever point you decide to stop the chart. The Crochet bind off closes off the feather points in the feathered edge chart, so it needs to be bound off as directed. If you decide to bind off differently, it may not close up correctly and your fan will not look right. CAST-ON Cast on 3 stitches using single cast on. Knit 24 rows in Garter stitch (knit each row) turn 90 degrees, pick up and knit 12 stitches along bumps on side. Pick up 3 stitches on end, where you cast on the first 3, for a total of 18 stitches. WS row: Sl1, K2, *P1, YO* 11 times, P1, K3 for a total of 29 stitches. The first and last three stitches are the shawl edge and will be worked in garter stitch for the entire shawl. For Chart C, you will be basically adding a purl section at each side of shawl, and the sections on each side of the leaves turn to all purls (braid area included). So in the end, you ll have 4 purl sections, braid turns into 1 purl section, 3 purl sections, braid turns into 1 purl section, 4 purl sections. A total of 13 purled sections to start the owls. *For ease of charting, Row 58 reads from left to right. After row 58, all WS rows will be: knit the knits and yarn overs, purl the purls. Final stitch count on Row 71 = 239. BEGIN INCREASES FOR OWL CABLE PATTERN Over the next four rows, you will be increasing 91 stitches for a total of 331 stitches. Basically you will PU and knit (or purl, depending on if it s a right or wrong side row) at the beginning and end of each row, and on each side of a leaf tip for row 72 and 73. Then you will increase at the beginning and end of the row and only on one side of leaf tip for row 74. On row 75, you ll be starting the set up for the owl ears.
