This tutorial is the same as the pattern except that I ve added designer comments and specific tips in italics and added close up photos of some of the steps. 3 16. Mitered Rectangle Note: Rectangle is knit by starting with three sides a short side, one long side and a short side. By decreasing at the two corners, a rectangle is formed with the outermost sts becoming the 4 th side. This mitered rectangle is shaped the more traditional method starting with the outside and working to the small. With A, cast on 31 sts, pick up and knit 1 st at end of last row on #14, place an open marker through this st, pick up and knit 62 sts along left edge of #14, #12 and #11, pick up and knit 1 st in corner between #11 and #10, place an open marker through this st, knit 31 sts across #10 (leaving remaining 21 stitches on hold on spare needle). Set-Up row (WS): Knit across, purling 2 marked sts at each corner. Right side rows: *K to 1 st before marked st, slip 2 tog as if to k, k1, pass slipped sts over; rep from * across row, knit to end. Wrong side rows: Knit across, purling 2 marked sts. 3

4 This type of double decrease forms a centered, symmetrical decrease. When slipping the 2 sts together, insert the right needle as if making a k2tog. Knit the next stitch, then lift both slipped stitches over the knit one. Move the marker up a few rows as you work. After working 8 rows in pattern with A, join D and work 4 rows. Continue in stripe pattern until 6 sts remain. Bind off all stitches and cut yarns. 4

5 17. Slip Stitch Bricks Note: Slip all sts as if to purl and with yarn held to wrong side of work. This section joins along remaining 21 stitches across top of #10. In this section, the join is worked at the end of every RS row. Since the end of the shawl is in sight, it s easy to see how much yarn is left. Use your creativity to change some of the colors or yarns. With B and RS facing, pick up and knit 69 sts along top edge of #16. Purl 1 row. Row 1 (RS): With F, k4, sl 1, * k5, sl 1; rep from * to last 4 sts, k3, k2tog using last st and 1 st from spare needle. Rows 2 and 4: With F, k4, sl 1, *k5, sl 1; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4. Row 3: With F, sl 1, *p5, sl 1; rep from * to last 4 sts, p3, k2tog using last st and 1 st from spare needle. Rows 5 and 11: With B, k to last st, k2tog using last st and 1 st from spare needle. Rows 6 and 12: With B, p. Row 7: With F, k1, sl 1, *k5, sl 1; rep from * to last st, k2tog using last st and 1 st from spare needle. Row 8 and 10: With F, k1, sl 1, *k5, sl 1; rep from * to last st, k1. Row 9: With F, p1, sl 1, * p5, sl 1; rep from * to last st, k2tog using last st and 1 st from spare needle. Repeat rows 1-12 until all sts from #10 are eaten up. Cut yarns. Leave sts on needle. This closeup shows the bricks. Even if the two colors are close, the bricks will show up due to the different textures of both yarns and stitches. Slip the stitches as if to purl and keep the yarn on the WS of the work. Stitches are also slipped on WS rows so be careful to move the yarn to the WS when slipped so you don t get a strand on the RS. 5

6 Although there have been several times to join a side edge in this shawl, here is another close up of it being joined in this section. 18. Second Long Edge With A and RS facing, knit across 69 sts from #17, pick up and knit 32 sts along left edge of #10, pick up and knit 36 sts along side edge of #1, pick up and knit 33 sts along side edge of #2, pick up and knit 4 sts along end of #5, pick up and knit 37 sts along side edge of #6, pick up and knit 24 sts along side edge of # sts. Knit 3 rows. Bind off all sts loosely. 19. Applied Lace Edging With H, knit across 39 sts from #14, pick up and knit 31 sts along edge of #16, pick up and knit 26 sts along edge of #17. [96 sts]. Note: These sts will be joined 1 at a time to the edging (on each WS row) as it is worked. Cast on 6 sts to the same needle. Turn. Knit 5, k2tog using last st and 1 st from edge. Row 1: K1, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, yo, k1. Row 2 (WS): K2, k1tbl, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog using last st and 1 st from edge. Row 3: K1, k2tog, yo, k5. Row 4: Bind off 2, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog using last st and 1 st from edge. Repeat rows 1-4 until all sts have been joined. Bind off. 6

7 After picking up sts, the edging is knit and attached at the same time. It is intentionally made to gather slightly rather than lay flat the way the other joins have done. 7

8 Weave in ends. Block shawl. Blocking can be done by wetting the shawl then laying it out on a flat, clean surface. I usually use an old quilt on the floor. It s big enough to fit the shawl. Either stretch the shawl out flat or pin it. Blocking wires can also be used to make the edges very straight and even. Allow it to dry. Wear it with pride and show your photos on Ravelry!
