2 The Op Art Shawl features a play the traditional Old Shale lace pattern, updated to create a shawl with a more modern construction and feel. The lace pattern distorts the stripes in a way that is reminiscent of the work of Bridget Riley, and so the name was born. This pattern is written to be worked in either two or four colours. FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Wingspan: 208 cm / 82 inches Depth: 51 cm / 20 inches YARN For Two-Colour Version: Blacker Yarns Brushwork, Sport Weight (70% Scottish Bowmont, 20% British Alpaca, 10% Castlemilk Moorit; 152 metres / 165 yards per 50g) Shown in: MC: Wash; 3 balls CC: Splosh; 2 balls OR For Four-Colour Version: Blacker Yarns Jacob, DK (100% Jacob Wool; 110 metres / 119 yards per 50g) Shown in: MC: Clay; 2 balls CC A: Marlstone; 1 ball CC B: Granite; 1 ball CC C: Basalt; 2 balls DIFFICULTY Techniques include: simple lace knitting from charted instructions, short row shaping NEEDLES AND NOTIONS 4.5 mm (UK 7, US 7) circular knitting needle 7 stitch markers Darning needle to sew in ends GAUGE / TENSION 18 sts and 26 rows to 10 cm / 4 inches square measured over Old Shale Lace when blocked 15 sts and 30 rows to 10 cm / 4 inches square measured over Garter Stitch when blocked Always use a needle size which results in the correct gauge after blocking Note: When selecting colour combinations we recommend that you use the paler shade as MC Abbreviations can be found on Page 4 PATTERN NOTES This shawl is knitted from edge to edge, using a combination of Old Shale Lace and Garter Stitch. It features a simple stripe sequence and some short row shaping. The edges are neatly finished with an i- cord.

4 INSTRUCTIONS 1. CAST ON AND SET UP Note: the first and last three sts of each row will form the i-cord edging, please take care to work these sts particularly loosely Using MC cast on 8 sts using the Long Tail Cast On Set Up Row (WS): k4, PM, k1, sl3wyif Row 1 (RS): k4, SM, yo, k to 3 sts before end, sl3wyif (1 st increased) Row 2 (WS): k to 3 sts before end, sl3wyif Row 3 & 4: same as Row 2 Repeat these 4 Rows a further 25 times (26 sts increased, 34 sts total) Repeat Rows 1-3 once more (1 st increased, 35 sts total) 2. OLD SHALE LACE SECTION Set Up Row (WS): k8, PM, k18, PM, k to 3 sts before end, sl3wyif Switch to working from Chart A Note: i-cord edges will now appear on Chart A, they are worked in the same manner as before Two-Colour Version Work 2 full repeats of Chart A (36 sts increased, 71 sts total) Four-Colour Version Work Chart A once (18 sts increased, 53 sts total) Two-Colour Version For two-colour version, join CC and work 2 further repeats of Chart A with the following stripe sequence: CC: two rows Once these two full repeats have been worked, break MC yarn (36 sts increased, 107 sts total) Four-Colour Version For four-colour version, join CC A and repeat Chart A, with the following stripe sequence: CC A: two rows Break CC A and join CC B, and repeat Chart A with the following stripe sequence: CC B: two rows Break CC B and join CC C, and repeat Chart A once more with the following stripe sequence: CC C: two rows Once these three full repeats have been worked, break MC yarn (54 sts increased, 107 sts total) 4. SHORT ROW GARTER STITCH SECTION Note: this section will be worked using CC, or CC C only Set Up (RS): k4, yo, k to 8 sts before end removing stitch markers as you encounter them, W&T (1 st increased, 108 sts total) Set Up (WS): k to 3 sts before end, sl3wyif 3. STRIPED OLD SHALE LACE SECTION Note: floats for the yarn not being used will naturally hide themselves inside your i-cord edging, just remember to work these sts particularly loosely Row 1 (RS): k4, yo, k to 4 sts before last wrapped st, W&T (1 st increased) Row 2 (WS): k to 3 sts before end, sl3wyif

5 Note: you will have 3 knit stitches separating every W&T Repeat these 2 Rows a further 29 times (30 sts increased, 138 sts total) 5. GARTER STITCH SECTION Note: on the first row of this section you will encounter your wrapped stitches, there is no need to pick these up as they will not show in Garter Stitch Row 1 (RS): k4, yo, k to 3 sts before end, sl3wyif (1 st increased) Row 2 (WS): k to 3 sts before end, sl3wyif Repeat these 2 Rows a further 10 times (11 sts increased, 149 sts total) Cast off loosely using the k2tog Bind Off 6. FINISHING Weave in ends and wet block finished shawl to given dimensions. CARE INSTRUCTIONS Gently hand wash your finished project in lukewarm water using a liquid wool wash. Press between two towels to remove excess water; do not tumble dry. Spread flat to dry, pinning or hand pressing to correct size.
