The Toledo Museum of Art offers art classes for all ages and levels of experience, in a wide variety of media to satisfy your interests. All classes and workshops are related to works of art in the TMA collection. Students will visit the galleries, learn about some of the iconic works of art, then combine that inspiration with their own creativity back in the studio. Looking for a creative outlet for the kids? You ll find it here. Through engaging projects with knowledgeable instructors, children and teens learn to understand art and some of the many ways to create it. Want to try something new? You ll find it here. Sample different materials, learn basic techniques, and enjoy unleashing your creativity. Immerse yourself in the process or share the experience with friends. Seeking an opportunity to refine your skills? You ll find it here. For those who are serious about gaining proficiency, TMA offers advanced courses and workshops in a variety of media, skilled instructors, and professional-grade materials and equipment to help take you to the next level. For the truly dedicated, we provide opportunities for independent study such as open studio time and personal training sessions. 3

In person by visiting the education office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. 4. Box 1013 Toledo, Ohio We accept check, credit card, and Toledo Museum of Art gift cards. Make checks payable to Toledo Museum of Art. All returned checks are subject to a $20 service charge. Registrations must be paid in full to ensure participation. No unpaid registrations accepted. Registration closes approximately two weeks before the start of each session. Registration Dates for Classes Session 1 Registration and scholarship deadline: August 27 Session 2 Registration and scholarship deadline: October 1 Withdrawal Policy Students withdrawing from a class should notify the registrar in writing at least one week prior to the start of class. Withdrawals may be submitted by completing and returning a withdrawal form via or regular mail. Students will receive credit to attend another class of similar value but it must be used no later than the following semester. There will be no withdrawals or transfers permitted after the start of the first class. Refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Member Discounts Members of the Toledo Museum of Art receive a discount on all classes as well as free parking (a $7-per-visit value). A membership is a great way to support your Museum and, in many cases, pays for itself! Class Changes/Cancellation The Museum reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment or unforeseen circumstances. Occasionally, class start dates and times change from those listed or classes are combined to meet minimum enrollment numbers. If it is necessary to cancel a class for any reason, registered participants will be informed as soon as possible and extended the opportunity to transfer to another class or receive a full refund. Teen Work-Study Program Teens ages have the opportunity to serve as classroom assistants for children s classes (grades K 5). In exchange for their semester-long commitment, they will receive one teen art class free of charge that same semester. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. For more information or an application form, visit Promotional Photography By enrolling yourself or your child in a Toledo Museum of Art class, you grant permission to be photographed for promotional purposes without compensation. Hours and policies are subject to change without notice. Scholarships The Museum has a number of scholarship opportunities available for youth and adult students. Scholarships, awarded based on financial need, cover 100% of tuition fees for most classes. Students submitting a scholarship application form require no other method of registration. Only one scholarship form may be submitted per class, but multiple forms may be submitted for multiple classes. Scholarships are competitive and the volume of submissions is high; unfortunately applying does not guarantee automatic approval. 5 Children's Art Classes Big and Little Art Classes (Ages 3 5 with adult) Children and their adult partners learn about the Museum through hands-on activities, stories, and visits to the galleries. In the studio, little artists experiment with a variety of fun art-making materials. [$75 members / $90 nonmembers] Session 1 Big & Little: Little Painters 10 11:30 a.m. Introduce your little artist to the world of painting through gallery visits and hands-on activities. Students will learn about lines and shapes, then create their own works of art using paint, brushes, and other fun tools. 5 Saturdays beginning September 16 (1AS100) Session 2 Big & Little: Art Detectives 10 11:30 a.m. In this class, little artists and their partners will explore the mysteries of the Museum! Students will explore the Museum s collection to learn how artists past and present created works of art. 5 Saturdays beginning September 16 (1AS115) Drawing and Painting in Color (Ages 10 11) 10 a.m. noon Through looking at masterworks in the Museum's collection and the practice of drawing and painting techniques, students will create their own colorful compositions using a variety of drawing and paint materials. 5 Saturdays beginning September 16 (3SP330) Monsters and Myths (Ages 8 9) 10 A.M. NOON Drawing inspiration from mythological works in the Museum s collection and the special exhibition The Berlin Painter and His World, students will create their own monsters and mythological creatures using a variety of materials, including plaster or air dry clay. 5 Saturdays beginning September 16 (2MM515) Digital Photography (Ages 12 13) 10 A.M. NOON In this class, students will learn the basics of using a digital camera including composing and creatively enhancing images. Original compositions will be inspired by the Museum campus and the special exhibition, Kara Walker, Harper s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated). NOON Inspired by TMA s modern and contemporary collection, students in this class will combine drawing and painting techniques with printmaking to create original works on paper. 5 Saturdays beginning October 21 (2SM201) 3D Media (Ages 10 11) 10 a.m. noon Explore the many possibilities of sculpture through visits to the galleries and building in the studio. Students will practice sculptural techniques using materials like plaster and air dry clay. 5 Saturdays beginning October 21 (3MM310) Express Yourself (Ages 12 13) 10 a.m. noon Students in this class will investigate self portraits and other examples of artistic self-expression through visits to the Museum s galleries. Back in the studio, students will create their own imaginative self portraits using drawing, painting, and sculpture materials. 5 Saturdays beginning October 21 (4MM375) LEGO Masterpieces (Ages 6 9) 1 3 P.M. Using the TMA collection for inspiration, students will build their own one-of-a-kind LEGO masterpieces and create LEGO -inspired works of art. LEGO pieces are for in-class only and cannot be taken home. 5 Saturdays beginning October 21 (7MM415) Minecraft at the Museum (Ages 10 13) 1 3 P.M. Dive into the world of Minecraft at TMA! Students will learn to direct their passion for playing the game towards developing computer programming skills while gaining inspiration from the Museum s galleries. All skill levels welcome. 8 Homeschool Art Classes Learn the fundamentals and history of studio art. Each class travels the galleries to look and learn, then students make their own works of art in the studio. Session 1 High School Glassblowing (Ages 14 18) 9 A.M. NOON Learn the basics of hot shop glassblowing or take the class again to practice what you already know. Students will draw inspiration from the collection to build techniques in the hot shop and discuss the historical and contemporary significance of glass as a craft and artistic medium. No experience required! [$245 members / $260 nonmembers] 5 Saturdays beginning September 16 (5GH101) Mixed Media Art (Ages 14 18) 1 3 P.M. Gathering inspiration from contemporary artists like Jennifer Bartlett and Kara Walker, students will learn to combine drawing, painting, and printmaking techniques to create layered works of art. [$75 members / $90 nonmembers] 5 Saturdays beginning September 16 (5MM315) Session 2 Beginning Flameworking (Ages 14 18) 10 A.M. NOON Learn how to melt and manipulate soft glass on a small scale by using a hot torch to create beads, miniature sculptures, and other objects. No experience required. After visiting works in the Museum's galleries, children and their adult partners will work together to create original artwork inspired by the collection. SESSION 1 Beginning Enameling Harriet Nearing The technique of enameling has been used by artists such as René Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany to create jewelry with amazing color and depth. Drawing inspiration from works in the TMA collection, students will MIG, Arc and TIG weld steel, stainless or aluminum, to make their own sculptures. Prerequisite: Beginning Welded Sculpture [$200 members / $230 nonmembers] 10 Mondays beginning September 11 6:30 9:30 p.m. (9AS522) Damascus Steel Hans Ruebel This class focuses on forge welding while you make your own Damascus steel, a laminate of forge-welded steel. Students will learn this technique that was used in Japan to create patterned swords as seen in the Asian art gallery. Prerequisite: Beginning Blacksmithing [$210 members / $240 nonmembers] 10 Tuesdays beginning September 12 6:30 9:30 p.m. (9AB330) Beginning Welded Sculpture Hans Ruebel Create artwork in steel inspired by artists like Alexander Calder, David Smith, and Tony Smith. 17 Glass Explore one of the most popular and versatile artistic mediums available. Class sizes are small, so register early. Basic supplies are provided. Students in advanced classes may choose to bring specialized tools and colors for specific applications. All classes explore techniques found in TMA's glass collection. Hot Glass Traditional tools such as blowpipes and rods are used to gather, blow, and sculpt molten glass taken directly from the furnace. Flameworking A gas torch is used to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. The molten glass is then formed and shaped with a variety of precise tools and hand movements. Warm Glass Kilns heat and soften glass, which is then manipulated with various techniques to fuse flat layers or create molded forms via slumping or casting methods. 17

18 Hot Glass SESSION 1 Glassblowing I Leonard Marty Learn the exciting and ancient art of glassblowing. In this class you will explore TMA s world-class glass collection for insights and inspiration. Students will be introduced to the basic mechanics of glassblowing and will begin a simple system for making forms and using color. No experience necessary. [$500 members / $525 nonmembers] 10 Mondays beginning September 11 6:30 9:30 p.m. (9GH101) Glassblowing III Leonard Marty This class is a continuation of the system learned in the first two courses. Examination of the glass collection will give students insights into various forms and techniques that they can emulate in the hot shop. Attention will be focused on perfecting the basic skills required to blow glass without instruction. Prerequisite: Glassblowing II [$500 members / $525 nonmembers] 10 Wednesdays beginning September 13 6:30 9:30 p.m. (9GH301) Glassblowing II Leonard Marty This class builds on the skills developed in the beginning class. Examination of the glass collection will give students insight into various forms they can emulate. Attention will be focused on refining the basic techniques and introducing students to a wider variety of simple color applications and forms. Utilizing the Museum's collection for inspiration, students will learn the fundamentals for creating various solid and sculpted forms. No experience necessary. [$225 members / $250 nonmembers] 5 Mondays beginning September 11 6:30 9:30 p.m. (9GF115) SESSION 2 Intermediate Flameworking Soft Glass Heather Hughes-Meek This class will continue to build skills in manipulating soft glass at the torch. Students will learn new techniques in hollow core forming and explore the application of murrini, dicro, and silver leaf materials. Prerequisite: Beginning Flameworking or Beginning Flameworking Soft Glass [$225 members / $250 nonmembers] 5 Mondays beginning October 16 6:30 9:30 p.m. (9GF315) Borosilicate at the Torch Eamon King Students in this class will learn the foundations of working with Borosilicate glass at the torch. Through visits to the galleries and discussion of safety in the studio, students will explore techniques to create solid shapes such as marbles, pendants and small figurines. No experience necessary. 20 Warm Glass & Cold Working SESSION 1 Bits and Pieces Mary Lane Drawing inspiration from the Museum s collection, students will learn the basics of cutting glass and kiln forming techniques to create organic and abstract designs in glass. No experience necessary. [$225 members / $250 nonmembers] 5 Mondays beginning September 11 6:30 9:30 p.m. (9GW125) Special Topics in Glass: Lost Wax Casting Tim Stover In this course, students will advance their mold making and kiln casting skills by learning about the lost wax casting process. Through gallery visits and technique-building in the studio, students will practice making wax objects then learn the flower pot casting technique to cast intricate shapes in glass. Previous casting experience recommended but not required.
