3 Glass Flame Working New Orleans Studio Friday, 03/28 1:30 PM 4:30 PM Scientific glass flame working, or torch working, and glass beadmaking allows guests to experience the techniques of forming glass objects, such as glass sea creatures or glass beads, from rods of colored glass (called cane). Each glass sculpture is formed by careful and delicate maneuvering of the glass cane around a steel rod, called a mandrel. Many techniques employed in flame working resemble those used in glassblowing, but are just much smaller in scale. Gravity, heat, and the use of simple, steel hand tools are the basic equipment needed to shape the glass into an array of sculptural designs. Our experienced GlassWorks' faculty members gently guide each visitor through the intricate steps. (Please keep in mind that the beads MUST cool overnight; beads will not be available to take home at the end of your event. Glass sculptures your group members have created and labeled may be shipped to you after they have properly cooled.) A bus will be provided. Lunch will Mini Float Building/Guided Tour Blaine Kern s Mardi Gras World Friday, 03/28 1:30 PM 5:30 PM Kick off the experience with a guided tour for the group. The tour includes a 12-minute movie presentation, an opportunity to try on costumes, King Cake and coffee, Mardi Gras World beads, a tour of the Prop Shop to see the artists creating, painting, constructing, and sculpting. The group will also view the most awesome floats ever built for carnival the Orpheus 140 foot triple-tandem sea monster Leviathan and the 240 foot quintupletandem Captain Eddie s SS Endymion with tens of thousands of fiber optic lights. The group will be sub-divided into groups and each team will then sketch their vision of the float on paper. Then they begin construction. There will be artists on hand for verbal assistance and they will also be available to judge the floats at the end. A bus will be provided. Lunch will $ Last Update 12/5/2007

4 Printmaking New Orleans Studio Friday, 03/28 1:30 PM 4:30 PM Group members will be introduced to the traditional process of printmaking in a fun and spontaneous setting while making their own unique MONOPRINT. A verbal narration accompanies the demonstration while GlassWorks faculty gently instructs each visitor. MONOPRINTS transforms the image making process turning any surface into a unique design on paper. Images can be quickly made, allowing the exploration of texture and ink. A Conrad intaglio printing press, or a revolutionary Whelan Press, will be employed to produce the images created during your group s activities. No experience necessary for the first time printmaker. (Please keep in mind that the prints MUST dry overnight; prints will not be available to take home at the end of your event. Group members can arrange to have GlassWorks mail out their flame worked glass creations and prints when they have properly dried/cooled.) A bus will be provided. Lunch will John Scott Spirit Houses/Louisiana Children s Museum (Repeated from Thursday) Be an Artist for a Day at the Contemporary Arts Center Friday, 03/28 2:00 PM 4:30 PM This workshop will begin with background information of New Orleans Master Artist John Scott and discussion of select artwork from his collection. The workshop will be led by Stephanie Parr, a local working artist and art educator for the Louisiana Children s Museum. You will walk to the museum (meet at the convention center and entire group will be taken together). Lunch will NOT be provided. Saturday, 03/29 12:30 PM 5:30 PM The Artists for a Day program at The Contemporary Arts Center is a field trip opportunity where students spend the day with professional New Orleans artists. In this adaptation of the program, participants will become the students and work with a visual artist, musician, dancer, actor, and creative writer. The participants will be able to experience all disciplines and leave with lesson plans that can be used in the classroom. A bus will be provided. A boxed lunch WILL be provided.
