The next Management Committee will be held on Monday 6 March 2017 at 4.30 pm at the Club premises at 28a Grove Street Cairns. Members are welcome to attend and/or bring issues to the Committee at this meeting. A word from the President. At the first Management committee meeting in Feb 2017 a lot of issues had to be dealt with. We were looking at increasing pottery classes, both children s and adults, to be conducted at the clubhouse, ordering more clay and setting a date for the AGM, so a new committee can help planning activities for this coming year. Our National Ceramics exhibition MELTING POT 2016 which closed down 29 January 2017 at the Cairns Regional Gallery was a great success with the visitors book full of complimentary comments. The roof in the kiln room has been leaking and damaged the controller of the large electric kiln, so we are in the process of getting the roof fixed up and ordering a new controller. Members can practise their hand building, wheel throwing, decorating and glazing techniques and perhaps share a firing, also a chance to get to know other potters and share their joy in pottery making. Intermediate/Advanced Individual styles will be developed while learning to create more complex forms: distorted forms, varied platters, large wares, diversified surfaces and lids. Hand-building Classes You will create coil, pinch, and slab wares or sculpture. All levels Beginners will learn new skills, while Intermediate and Advanced students will develop and refine their more complex ideas and skills through practice. Glaze Classes To learn application and mixing glazes, you will be required to bring the following requirements: small lidded plastic containers, masking tape, waterproof marker, notebook, dust mask and apron. Clean up after use of wheels or tabletops, do not leave water in buckets (it attracts mosquitoes), do not throw clay slops out in the garden, save the clay and turn off fan and lights before you leave the clubhouse. 7 Brigitte Baumeister Coming to Cairns this many years ago, we fell in love just driving in with the mountain backdrop on our left, the sea on our right. That is nearly 30 years ago. It seems to be a natural progression when you start out new to choose things you always wanted to do. Voila there is ceramics / pottery. Kerry had just started teaching pottery at the TAFE where I enrolled over some time until I was highly pregnant with our boys. After that ceramics went to the backburner for a while, until I started to set up a workshop at home. One of my most favourite memories is the sound of the wheel spinning, our Rottweiler lying at my feet with splashes of clay all over just blinking slightly with another blob of slip hitting her, the boys digging into clay and producing artwork, hugging the dog until she had more brown than black on her coat. It is only a few years back that I realised that there are still some very limited now pottery classes at the TAFE, where you can pick on anybody s knowledge and experience, which has given my pottery a new lease of life (thanks to great teachers). To me ceramics is about exploring satisfying when it works, often unexpected and trying new approaches. When something works, it s time to move on. Page 7
