4 EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS: ALL AGES (LISTED CHRONOLOGICALLY) An Evening with the Artist Zona Artist Zona will host a lecture at the Buchanan Art Center on Thursday, March 19, 6-7pm. Lecture will include a power point presentation of Zona s textile installations and large-scale ceramics sculptures. This lecture is featured as an introduction to her class AMAZING SCULPTURES AND POTS being offered Spring 2015 (see class listing). This lecture is free and open to the public. Come in and see her astounding works of art.! Empty Bowls 20th Anniversary Soup Supper The 20 th Buchanan Empty Bowls Soup Supper will be hosted at Buchanan High School on Friday, April 17, 4:30-7 pm. We hope that you will attend and purchase a hand-made ceramic bowl along with a simple soup supper and help end hunger. All potters, students, teachers, administrators, parents, donors and other volunteers who have worked over the years to make Empty Bowls so successful in Buchanan are invited to join us in celebrating. There will be a memorabilia table and an open potter s wheel for past potters to "throw" one for old time s sake. All profits from the supper and presales will be donated to Redbud Area Ministries (RAM) food pantry in Buchanan. This philanthropic project is made possible by a partnership of Buchanan Art Center, Buchanan Community Schools, Redbud Area Ministries, and local potters, as well as the continuing generosity of local merchants, area foundations, and our caring community. Adult potters' bowls may be pre-purchased at the BAC February 25 through April 11. There will also be a commemorative t-shirt available for pre-order in March; further information will be sent out by the schools and on BAC's website and Facebook. Raku Walk Through - Saturday, May 23, 2015 Facilitators: Buchanan Art Center Raku Crew Volunteers All ages welcome (Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.) SATURDAY MAY AM 6 PM Last Glaze 3 pm. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED Pre-made pieces available for firing as priced $10 - $25. Price includes glaze and cost of firing. Experience the dynamic coming together of clay, fire, smoke and water in this one-day, walk-in workshop. During this firing process you can actually watch the glazes melt and the colors change right before your eyes! Just walk in (FOOTWEAR IS REQUIRED), buy a piece of pre-fired handmade pottery donated by BAC potters and glaze it the day of the firing. ALL GLAZING MUST BE DONE BY 3:00 PM to allow time for drying. The entire process takes approximately three hours. While waiting for your pots to dry, be sure to check out other activities and shows at the Center and then spend some time exploring all of Buchanan s businesses, downtown and uptown, for shopping and food. 6 All Creatures Great and Small Exhibit All ages welcome to enter. DECEMBER 9 through JANUARY 9 $10 Entry fee per each of two entries Thank you to our advertisers for their support! This year our biennial themed show will focus on all of the living creatures that surround and live with us, even if only in our minds. Creatures too small to be seen with the naked eye as well as animals so large that only the waters of the ocean can support their massive weight, and everything in between, can provide inspiration for the artist. Anything that creeps, crawls, swims, flies or runs qualifies. All work must be the original work of the artist. All styles and media, both 2D and 3D, are encouraged and will be accepted. Experienced artists and teachers will judge the show and bestow cash awards on the most outstanding and original works in four age categories. Start preparing your artwork now. Puppets have been created in a variety of forms, including marionettes, hand puppets, rod puppets, finger puppets, and more. In this workshop, children will create various types of puppets using a wide variety of materials such as clay, papier-mâché, wood, fabric, and cardboard. Some of the puppets will be based on designs from other cultures, or reflect the styles of famous artists; others will come from the children's imaginations. Students will work on projects of their own choosing, with individual instruction combined with class demonstrations aimed at introducing effective ways to achieve the desired effects with watercolor. The first session will include a discussion of materials: if you have your own supplies, bring them, but if you are purchasing supplies you might want to wait until after this first session to shop. 11 REGISTRATION POLICIES PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! Updated: 8/6/12 FULL PAYMENT is required at the time of registration to hold your place in the class and count toward the minimum number of students required to support the class. TEACHERS CANNOT ACCEPT WALK-IN STUDENTS. Please do not bring unregistered, non-paying visitors to class without the invitation of the instructor. We welcome visitors to observe some activity classes, but not to participate without proper registration. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment two weekdays before the first meeting or after any stated enrollment cutoff date will be canceled, in which case, the Center will notify anyone enrolled and return registration payment. Once canceled, a class will not be reopened out of consideration for the instructor s preparation time as well as the students plans. Late registrations will be accepted ONLY if the class has not already been canceled or filled and if the instructor has enough time to plan for additional supplies and work stations. The Center reserves the right to alter the descriptions and/or contents of classes if the need arises. There will be no refunds after the first meeting of the class and no makeup classes except in the case of class cancelation due to weather or illness of the instructor. The Center will be closed if Buchanan Community Schools close due to the weather and is announced by the media. Otherwise, the Center will notify you and it is advisable that you always call the Center when in doubt. In either case, makeup classes will be scheduled. Members will receive a 10% discount on class tuition only. Materials fees cannot be discounted due to the high cost of art supplies. Nonmembers may join prior to or upon registration. This course is for beginning to advanced students, whether you have never drawn before and are sure that you can t or you have drawn for years and would enjoy the challenge of refining your approach. Emphasizing the basic elements of Line, Value and Composition with quick, easy solutions to effectively organize and communicate visually. Drawing can be and end in itself or as a preliminary prerequisite to developing more advanced arts and crafts. Each student will be evaluated and helped individually by the instructor in a fun and positive NO FAIL ZONE. Students may use whatever drawing tools they are most comfortable with. Learn to measure and cut a mat, dry mount and build attractive frames from common, inexpensive materials. High school and college students can learn to properly prepare their artwork for portfolios, exhibits, competitions and fairs. Adults can prepare artwork for exhibits, their homes and as gifts. This class provides students with training required for Art Center members to use the center s equipment on their own. Be sure to bring artwork that needs attention to the first class. Look for used frames in attics, auctions and yard sales and bring those in too! WE D LOVE FOR YOU TO BE A PART OF THE BAC! We are looking for people with wisdom, integrity, and commitment to the good of the Buchanan Community through the Buchanan Art Center. A BAC Board Member is one who is willing to share their time and/or talents by volunteering to serve as either the head of a committee (of their choice) or be willing to work on a committee with others. A BAC Member should hold an active membership to the Buchanan Art Center at the membership level of their choice. Board meetings are usually scheduled on the second Wednesday of the month at the Buchanan Art Center. A BAC Board member should plan to attend Board meetings on a regular basis. A BAC Board member should plan to attend and assist with Artist Receptions at the BAC when possible. Artist Receptions are usually hosted once every 5-6 weeks on Sundays from 2-4 pm. We are currently looking for new BAC Board members. Each registered student will receive 8 non-transferable passes that must be signed, dated and turned into the facilitator at each visit regardless of whether they stay the entire time or not. Easter Fun Paper Cutting Olga Orlovska-Solaltys, MFA in Textile Design and Decoration Adults and Teens, (limit 8 students) 2 Mondays, March 23 and 30; 10:30am-1:30pm. Registration Required by March 19. $40 Member $45 Nonmember; all materials provided except: sharp scissors, Elmer s glue and glue stick. As Easter approaches let s do Easter cards and fun projects using colored papers, scissors and knives. As you try your hand at some of the instruction, you will find that you can draw pictures with scissors. In this two day class students will learn about the history of paper cutting while creating cards and art pieces by folding and cutting multiple layers of colored paper. Students should bring good quality sharp scissors, Elmer s glue and glue stick. Remember: Art classes make a wonderful gift for any age; ask about our gift certificates!
14 Fused Glass: Introductory or Workshop Susan Griffin and Marie Hodge, Fused Glass Artisans, Instructors. Introductory: $35 member, $40 nonmember, all materials provided; Workshop: $12 member, $15 nonmember, student must be approved by instructors and provide all tools and materials. Introductory level students will learn about the art of fusing glass, type of glass and how to use glass cutting tools. They will make projects such as jewelry, magnets and other small glass pieces. Introductory student works are given first priority in firings. Students must have taken the INTRODUCTORY level glass fusing class at BAC before they can participate at the Workshop level. Workshop level students are required to supply all of their own tools and glass. All pieces must be made in class, only pieces made during the workshop will be fired. Kumihimo Braided Bracelet Darlene Troyer, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 6 Students) Tuesday, March 24, 12:30-3:30 pm. Registration Required by March 19. $45 member, $50 nonmember. All materials provided Kumihimo is the traditional Japanese technique of braiding strands of silk to create colorful strong but slender cord for a multitude of uses. Students will learn to create their strand on a special designed Kumihimo disc and then turn it into a beautiful bracelet by the end of the class. Tips on different types of materials that can be used and finishing will be taught. All items needed for this class are included in the class pack. ELECTRIC KILN FIRING WITHOUT FEAR Marie Remington, MFA in Ceramics, Instructor Adults (limit 10 students) Wednesday, March 25, 6:30-9:30 pm. Registration Required by March 21. $25 member $29 nonmember. Handouts provided. Bring a pencil and your favorite beverage! This workshop will cover essential, basic information whether you are a teacher firing student clay projects or an individual wanting to set up a studio at home. We will discuss which kiln fits your needs, choosing compatible clay and glazes, understanding firing ranges and schedules, reading cones and safety shut off features, loading bisque and glaze firings, caring for the kiln and kiln furniture, and how to avoid costly repairs and lost work. Bring all available information about your kiln, clay and glazes you may already be using or are considering. Your kiln manual and catalogs you order from will be especially helpful. Most kiln manuals for specific models can be downloaded from the Internet. AMAZING SCULPTURES AND POTS (Beginners-Advanced) Jennifer A. Using inspiration from the human figure, animals, nature, architecture and more to create free- standing, hand-made works of art. Learn the basics and let your creativity do the rest!
