It has been a long time since we have had a wheel thrown activity night so I thought I would give it ago. I will be plagiarising from the internet and we will be attempting to assemble an altered dish. While this is principally for on the wheel I am sure that some of the idea could easily be translated to hand work. Please bring your normal tools and clay, then we will all have a go together. Mothers Day Sale May Thank you to all our members and families who came and helped with both the set up and the take down of our sale. Thank you to all those who did a duty and thank you to all the potters who had work for sale. Overall it seems as if the sale was a success with approximately $1800 worth of sales. This is great for both the potters who sold and the club as it raised $270 for the club in commissions. It also meant that we have had more interest in our night classes and as always it is great to have a presence in the community. Please note you are all welcome to pot on committee nights. 1

2 Activity Night with Vicky Griffin Review Let s do some weaving! For our May activity night Vicky Griffin chose to demonstrate to us how to weave with clay. Vicky was well prepared she had notes, she had woven dishes that she had made and fired in advance, she also had set up strips of clay so that she could show us how to do it. Additionally Vicky was able to share her thoughts about how she has worked with weaving and the small pitfalls that you need to be aware of a key one is remembering the flexibility of your clay as it starts to dry out. This was a fun activity night. We had about eight people attend, and everyone was enthusiastic and had lots of questions for Vicky. We were all itching to have a go too, and Vicky had available a bag of clay that was very silky and elastic to use (and terracotta for those who wanted it). I guess for me the key is to be clear about what you intend to make sort out the shape if you need to use a mould to help hold the form, measure the strips of clay including their width and length. And then leap in. A great time was had by all, at times sounds of both frustration and joy emitting from people as they successfully wove the clay or the strips snapped off in the wrong place. People worked quickly and it was fantastic to see people giving it a go and experimenting beyond what Vicky had demonstrated. I tried to do a bit of Harakeke (Maori flax weaving), and unfortunately I only got it so far because it started to break off. However the piece I ended up with looked good and this has definitely given me ideas about how I could use this technique for future work. Thank you Vicky for a creative and inspiring night. Jo Pohatu Library News By Velma Turner Well the catalogue is complete at last. It all looks very professional thanks to the marvels of modern science (Excel Spread Sheets), I have to admit with reluctance, that it beats the high stool and quill pen. Feel free to now take out anything on loan, but please fill in the borrowers book and also sign the book back in upon return. Please try to only hold books for 2 weeks at a time. It is still to be decided what to do about the duplicates. These are on the tea wagon if you would like to have a look and make any comments regarding disposal or otherwise in time for the next committee meeting on Wed 4 th July. It will be on during the Rhododendron Festival so well worth entering or visiting. Potters Ingenuity Anything is possible. Vicky Quick Tip Wheel Powered Grinding Disk. Can you guess how this home made wheel was put together?? This wheel was found at a friend s place at Waimana (Bay of Plenty). She had inherited it from its maker and is about to start using it. There are times when something has got to go: Like lids that don't quite fit, especially after warping a bit on the kiln shelf. Or coffee cup bottoms that teeter a bit when sitting on a flat surface. A flat mounted grinder can save pots in those situations. Grinders are useful in many forms but a good controllable grinder can be easily made using the potter's wheel. The idea is simple: go to an auto supply or hardware, and ask for the largest diameter grinding pads they have (up to 10 inches, medium grit is best). These pads are used on high speed grinders for auto-body and metal working, but they also work well at lower speeds such as those encountered at your electric--or even kick wheel. Glue the pad onto a bat, secure it to the wheel head, and get it spinning fast. Hold the pot steady on the grinding surface, and keep your hands away from the grinding area. Its electric and the motor is an old sewing machine motor and parts. The tray is an old metal bowl and the wheel head looks like it s A mask and protective eye wear are advised when using a grinder. Both will be 18 hours tuition and cost you $120 per course Course 1 Full and underway 7 th May to 25 th June 2012 Mondays 7pm 9.30pm This class is taking place so sorry no potting on Monday nights. Course 2 16 th July to 10 th September 2012 Mondays 7pm 9.30pm Anne: Wheelwork Class for Intermediate and advanced Tutor Aimée McLeod This will be 18 hours tuition and cost you $120 28th June 23rd August Thursday 7pm- 9:30pm NB: This class is starting a week later than first advertised, and there will be no class 19th July due to meeting, so will finish 2 weeks later. This class will include exercises and techniques as we go and we will investigate the use of slips. As well as this we will work on individual projects from start to finish, discussing the appropriate clay, techniques required, surface treatment and decoration, firing temperatures and glaze finish. As intermediate & advanced students you will be expected to have all your own tools, bats and clay. Firing fees will be charged on weight at current GHWP club prices. All additional fees are payable to the tutor in cash during the classes.
