The next Management Committee will be held on Monday 1 May 2017 at 4.30 pm at the Club premises at 28a Grove Street Cairns. Members are welcome to attend and/or bring issues to the Committee at this meeting. A word from the President. Our next big event is Mothers Day Fair. We have changed the date to a week before the Mother s day. So put in your calendar 6 May 2017 for that event. We will be happy for you to sell not only pottery, but also any other art works which you produce or even plants. (More info on the Mothers Day Fair on page 4). The next big event will be Cairns Show from 19 to 21 July. As usual we are setting up the Arts exhibition together with the Visual Arts Association and we hope you will consider entering one or more ceramic works in the exhibition. ( Entry closes end of June). More info in the June newsletter. 3 At the Clubhouse CLASSES: CHILDRENS CLASSES Tuesday and Thursday 3.30 to 5 pm. Contact Hedy Verhulst or hedy.verhulst@hotmail.com EVENING CLASSES Tuesday & Friday 6pm to 9 pm- Wheel Throwing Classes will learn to make plates, bowls, cups, vases etc Contact SAMALLIE KASIRYE on or Dunkasi@bigpond.com Wed & Thursday evenings - 6:30pm to 9:00pm. -Wheel throwing and hand building class for beginners and existing potters who would like to refresh their skills.- Contact yuki.koyuki@hotmail.com or (prefer SMS). OTHER ACTIVITIES: TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY MORNINGS - CLUB MEMBERS GET TOGETHER Between 9 and 12 noon no cost involved. Members can practise their hand building, wheel throwing, decorating and glazing techniques and perhaps share a firing, also a chance to get to know other potters and share their joy in pottery making. 4 Hope you have plenty of artworks to sell e.g. pots, glass, jewellery, paintings, plants etc. Arrive early around 7am to set up your table in a good spot. If you need a table for your display please contact Lone White on to book a table. (only limited tables available). Drop your sales sheet at the Sales table, as all works for sale must be paid for there. If you need a sales sheet either pick it up from the clubhouse or contact our secretary Erica or cairnspottersclub@hotmail.com. Clean up after use of wheels or tabletops, do not leave water in buckets ( it attracts mosquitoes), do not throw clay slops out in the garden, save the clay and turn off fan and lights before you leave the clubhouse. THANKS Local Kuranda ceramicist Mollie Bosworth is flying to Kauai, Hawaii, in May to teach her specialised ceramic techniques during a week-long workshop. Mollie will cover metallic salts on porcelain and hand building techniques with porcelain during this workshop. Page 5

6 Saturday 20 th May and Sunday 21 st May, 2017 Two day 'hands-on'participation workshop from 10am-4pm each day Tutor: Ellen Terrell Saturday morning demonstration of throwing & turning 'problem' shapes, as requested by participants hands-on practice on the wheel, with pieces to be turned & decorated when leather hard Saturday afternoon and Sunday discussion of design aspects of utilising coloured slips in combination with sgraffito & relief work discussion of different design aspects which need to be considered when planning to carve pieces, ie positive areas, negative areas, support for carved areas within the design, etc discussion on suitable glazes other than clear, for applying over the slips discussion on how glazes are affected by different types of clay hands-on decoration of pre-made leather hard pieces provided, utilising the above design aspects Participants to bring: any throwing & turning tools + clay (or can purchase from tutor) + towel for throwing any decorating tools such as sgraffito tools, carving scalpels/knives, brushes etc paper & pencil for sketches & notes. Tutor to bring: clay for demonstrations (some spare available for purchase) pre-made leather hard pieces, some thrown, some simple slab pieces variety of slips & recipe hand-outs variety of tools for those who do not have their own reference books on design Cost : Members $100 and non members $120 The last one day workshop held by Ellen Terrell in December 2016 was so popular, that many of the participants have asked for another workshop. 7 Craig Hoy I came to ceramics quite late having always dabbled as an art teacher. Moving to Cairns, I took a leap and undertook some studies at TAFE in wheel work for a couple of years while still teaching full time. It was what I was looking for and also where I really started to explore raku firing something that is now my core practice. Wheel throwing and raku are where my passion lies. There is something mesmerising yet challenging about conversations with clay when throwing on the wheel. I always remember Thancoupie saying to me Bala Boy, who am I to tell the Earth what to do!?! At its core, it discusses a respect for the Earth, for clay, for materials letting them have a life of their own, the maker s marks, a balance between craft and nature. There is also a direct link to aesthetic in the title of the show that glorious ancient surface raku can create and the play it has on the sitters depicted through it s process. What I love about raku firing, is it s elemental connectedness and exciting immediacy, predictable unpredictability that taps into something ancient. I love the scars they bear testament to their experiences and their survival. Sometimes the more damaged they are, the more I like them! To the point where structural failure (cracking etc.) is something that can make a piece even more special! I use these thoughts and processes and effects as humanistic metaphors. These works depict human experiences. They are human. We all bare our scars and carry the weight of our experiences differently. Some are pulled down by them and can t escape. Some revel in life regardless. Here, there is ability and disability. There is loss and life. Love, grief and fun. We are all human I guess and can relate to a lot of this. On a side line, I am also enjoying local wild clays. I m experimenting with clay bodies, blends and decorative slips. It s a lot of work, the forms are simple and I have a lot to learn but it s rewarding and feels natural somehow. Page 7
