Committee Members; The following members have agreed to be on the Committee: Glenys Lonie, Pamela Ortega, Hedy Vershult & Heather McCoy CLUB MEETINGS The Management Committee of the Club meets at 4.00 pm on the first Monday of the month at the Club premises at 28a Grove Street Cairns. Members are welcome to attend and/or bring issues to the Committee at these meetings.. The next Management Committee meeting will take place Monday 5 May 2014 at 4 pm. A word from the President. Our next big event is the annual Mothers Day Fair Saturday 10 May and not long after that we have to get ready for the Cairns Show in July, so we hope you are all busy making plenty of pots for sale for these events. The sub- committee is still busy looking for sponsors for our MELTING POT 2014 National Ceramics Exhibition, which is to be held at the Cairns Regional Gallery 17 October to 16 November. Make sure you also have a couple of pots made for that exhibition. Please note: Opinions expressed or advertisements displayed by contributors to this newsletter are not necessarily those of the Editor, Executive Officers or the Committee. 3 MOTHERS DAY FAIR - 10 May from 8am 3pm On the day! Arrive early around 7am to set up your table in a good spot. If you need a table for your display please contact Lone White on to book a table (limited tables available). Please we need help at the sales table, even if you have no pots to sell, the club can use your assistance, only for an hour or two. Any time would be a help. At 3:00 pm the Fair will close then it is time for you to pack up your unsold items. You do no longer need to fill in a sales sheet, however the treasurer suggests that it is still the best way to make sure everything is recorded and accounted for. Sales sheets are available from the club house. You will still have to affix each item for sale with a reasonably large sticker and clearly mark it with your initials, No. and sale price. The club takes the usual 20% commission on sales. Since 1978 the club has held annual Mothers days Fairs. It has been a good opportunity for club members to sell and promote their ceramics whilst also raising revenue for the club. Hope to see you at the Mother s Day Fair with plenty of pots, Glass work, jewellery, plants etc to sell. Please pick up from the clubhouse some of the yellow posters for Mother s Day Fair and distribute them around town Page 3

If you have problems with delivery of artworks please contact the Cairns Potters Club (Lone White or Christina George ) and arrangements can be made for you to drop off artworks earlier. Collection of Exhibits - 9am 12 noon Sat 19 July. Again if you cannot collect the artworks on that day, please contact Lone to make other arrangements. The Cairns Potters Club who are working in partnership with the Visual Arts Association is looking for artists to help look after the display during the show. It often becomes very busy with hundreds of people visiting each day. The show opens daily from 9 am to 9 pm. Each roster is for a three hour period with two people working together. If you are interested in helping out please contact Lone White lone@tpg.com.au or Chris George chrisg34@bigpond.net.au. You will get a free pass for the day when you are on the roster and coffee or tea with biscuits will be available for you whilst on the roster. As at all the other Cairns Show Visual Arts displays we can also sell members pots during the show. Same procedure as with Mothers Day - prepare a list of pots for sale, apply stickers on each item for sale with your initials, no and price. Again we take 20% commission on sales and pots have to be delivered to the Visual Arts Hall at the showground Tuesday 15 July between 2pm and 4pm and collected Sat 19 July between 9am and noon. 6 Glass Division Report APRIL 2014 (Deb. Clarke) So, the glass division has been relatively quiet, but Bev has produced some amazing suncatchers. Deb has utilised the club s tiny scrap off cuts from previous workshops and produced a quantity of fused nuggets to be used for texture pieces in the next lot of classes. Glass is great because there is no wastage. The workshops are still being negotiated and Deb is organising various tutors from across the region to be available. Notify Deb on robert.clarke12@bigpond.com or to register your name for notification of up coming classes or to organise access to either the glass kilns or the glass tools. Glass nuggets Report from Kiln Manager and Web Manager (Jennifer Arthur) Website. Everything is working well. Still getting a good response through the contact form. 281 users this month with 57% new people looking at the site. Still no response from members with pics! The website will start to look very stale without new images. Kilns Going pretty smoothly. Booking system is working well. A few teething issues with the new kiln but it is being used quite a bit. Thanks to Mark and Pam for putting new kiln wash on the shelves. DISTRIBUTION OF NEWSLETTERS. Many of our members get the newsletter sent by however some get a hard copy posted to them. Could you please let us know, if you wish to continue to get a hard copy or are willing to get an copy? Due to the cost of printing the newsletter we cannot afford to send the newsletter out in colour, so the members who get an copy get a much more colourful version of the newsletter. When you renew your membership (you can download a form from our website) could you please indicate how you wish us to send your future newsletters. Thanks. Page 6
7 Feature artist : Pamela Ortega Once having handled clay and maybe especially throwing on the wheel it is almost a given that you are hooked on potterysometimes for a lifetime. My first experience with clay was at the age of 19 during a Teachers Training course when I was introduced to ceramics as part of the Art Course. I immediately loved it and took to the wheel with enthusiasm, so much so that I majored at the end of the three years in Ceramics. I subsequently went off teaching in the countryside and after a year had organised to have a wheel made and to fire at a local high school when plans changed and I went overseas to live in England. Over the next few years I married and had babies but whenever possible found a place to pot in Community Art Centres, an equivalent of TAFE. Returning to Australia after eight years we came to Cairns. After a few years I returned to some part time potting, going to TAFE for a few years doing a number of courses but never completing a qualification. Moving to Mount Tamborine seven years ago I had a lovely old house with a shed but didn't take my old kiln. On the mountain I found a community Arts Centre with a pottery and here made myself at home. When we acquired a new electric kiln I began teaching throwing classes as no-one else was throwing pots. Two years ago a painter friend invited me to join her in an exhibition we titled Into the Distance at Hilltop Gallery on Tamborine Mountain. Now having swapped chilly mountain for warm Cairns and after a break of five months from pottery I have joined the Potters Club and am now happily potting again. I like to make domestic ware, everyday useful pots, with colourful, often green glazes, sometimes with underglaze decoration and large hand built pots. Recently I have begun painting small still life canvases incorporating these pots. Page 7
