Jenny Mulcahy NOTICE OF EXHIBITION: Falling Softly into Ash 12 August to 14 September 2017 Vault Shop Perc Tucker Regional Gallery Jenny Mulcahy is a local ceramicist and mixed media artist and educator who has resided on Magnetic Island since 1984 where she established the Nelly Bay Pottery Studio & Gallery [now Jenny Mulcahy's Gustav Creek Studio]. Mulcahy holds a PhD in Creative Arts from James Cook University, has participated in international artist residencies in Canada and Wales, and her work can be found in a number of art collections in institutions such as Perc Tucker Regional Gallery; Gold Coast City Gallery; The James Hardie Library of Fine Arts, Queensland State Library, Brisbane; and the Banff Centre for the Arts Ceramic Collection, Banff, Canada. In addition to her work in these indoor collections, Mulcahy is responsible for a number of large-scale public art pieces that can be seen throughout the Townsville area. Falling Softly into Ash focuses on a new series of works with delicate images created by first impressing fragile plant material into a soft paste made from porcelain which is then fired to a high temperature thus permanently embedding the plant material in the paper thin porcelain, the ashy residue delineating the remnant plant material. Ash has also been used to create a variety of finishes in the series of miniature still life groupings which have been either Saggar or Raku fired resulting in a variety of colours obtained from sawdust and green plant material used in the firing processes. 3
