1 EDINBURGH SCULPTURE WORKSHOP COURSES PROGRAMME SUMMER
2 EVENING COURSES Clay Portraiture Tutor: Duncan Robertson Tuesday 6.30pm 9pm 9 May 4 July 9 weeks / 22.5 hours 195 / 10 places This very popular course helps to develop observational skills and demonstrates clay modelling techniques. Working with a life model participants learn about form, measuring skills, clay application, texture and preparation of a finished clay head, with the option of firing the piece at the end of the course. Clay Time Tutor: Kjersti Sletteland Tuesday 6.30pm 9pm 9 May 13 June 5 weeks / 12.5 hours 185 / 8 places *1 week gap Clay Time will explore the different characteristics and qualities of clay. From dark grogged to fine porcelain, clay comes in various forms each with their own specific properties ranging from a liquid to a lump of mud, from a fine pliable sculpting material to a substance for creating razor sharp structures and shapes. This course will experiment with different approaches to working in this material producing two types of result - some slow-focused, finished glazed pieces alongside works with a more intuitive and playful approach. Ceramic Surface Printing Tutor: Mella Shaw Wednesday 6.30pm 9pm 10 May 31 May 4 weeks / 10 hours 165 / 8 places This new course guides participants through a specific technique for printing with coloured slips exploring the vast potential of ceramic decoration. Participants will experiment with mark-making and painterly surfaces to decorate their own slabs of clay, will hand-build ceramic sculptures and will investigate how surface decoration influences form. The pieces will be fired with the option of glazing at the end of the course.
3 DAY COURSES School of Sideways Sculpture Unit of Disbelief Tutor: Jack Cheetham Friday 1pm 4pm 28 April 30 June 10 weeks / 30 hours 185 / 10 places This term, School of Sideways Sculpture presents the Unit of Disbelief, led by artist Jack Cheetham. Centred on tradition, storytelling, identity, humour and fantasy this course will challenge perceptions and received ideas, taking experimental attitudes towards process and object making. The first five weeks of this course will focus on developing a new set of skills and fresh approaches using techniques of mould making, casting, clay modelling, ceramics and collage, that participants can then take into the studio or into the field. The second half of the course allows participants allotted studio time to develop work in a direction suitable for their own concerns, interests and aspirations with the guidance of the tutor in a peer-learning environment. CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE S WORKSHOPS SatARTday Welcome to my world Tutor: Lillian Ptáček Suitable for ages 9 12 Saturday 2pm 4pm 3 24 June 8 hours 40 / 10 places Over these four workshops we will create banners and flags to tell stories about who we are. Imagine if an alien visitor landed on your doorstep, how would you tell them who you are and where you come from? Using drawing and collage we will invent imaginary aliens and then create banners and flags that communicate stories of our lives to them. Free bursary places available call to find out more. SatARTday plus Tutor: Sally Hackett Suitable for ages Saturday 2pm 4pm 3 17 June 6 hours 30 / 10 places Become a king, queen, celebrity, leader or icon in these clay workshops led by artist Sally Hackett, where you will create commemorative ceramics that represent you as a significant and influential figure. Learn how to hand build, mould shapes, forms and bodies to produce an artwork from raw clay to a final glazed piece. Free bursary places available call to find out more.
4 WEEKEND COURSES Introduction to Metal Work Tutor: Joe Etchell Saturday 10am 1pm or 1.30pm 4.30pm 20 May or 8 July 75 / 6 places This course offers a basic introduction to the techniques needed to make a sculptural object in steel: cutting, welding and joining metal. The course will be a combination of demonstrations and practical work using equipment in ESW s metal workshop. Equipment covered includes: MIG welder, plasma cutter, cold saw, grinders, pillar drills and mechanical equipment. Shape it, make it, move it! Tutor: Kjersti Sletteland Saturday 10am 1pm 20 May & 27 May 6 hours 65 / 8 places Based on the collaborative process of the artists Tone Boska and Kjersti Sletteland in their project Biosenario, this workshop will encourage participants to create collaborative ceramic sculptures. Sculptural objects begun by participants are then passed amongst the group to be added to, altered and reconstructed by their peers as a way of exploring how creative ideas develop through collaboration. Sculptural Furniture Weekend Tutor: Robin Burns Saturday & Sunday 10am 4pm 1 & 2 July 10 hours 165 / 6 places This weekend course will introduce basic woodworking skills for designing and making prototypes of sculptural furniture. Through the course participants will learn joinery and tooling techniques working with hand tools and machinery. The course will produce experimental and conceptual prototypes of furniture that can pave the way for future project. Introduction to Parametric Design with MAKLAB Saturday 10am 12.30pm or 1.30pm 4pm 8 July 2.5 hours 30 / 20 places Get started with 3D modelling in this beginner s introduction to the parametric modelling tools in Fusion 360 with MAKLAB. Parametric Modelling is a computer 3D modelling technique that allows you to generate free-form shapes by creating a set of parameters or rules that inform the final shape of the 3D model. At the end of the workshop, participants will be given the opportunity to order a 3D print of their finished model at the cost of 10 per standard size model. All courses include additional self-directed learning of between 3 14 hours which allow participants to work in our spaces out with the course times. ESW s standard booking procedures apply.
