9 2014 WEAVING ODYSSEY INSTRUCTORS MARY BALINT Paw Paw, West Virginia Mary has been weaving for about 25 years. Mary lives in rural West Virginia at the end of six miles of dirt road on the Cacapon River, with 9 cats, three dogs and a part-time goat. ANNE BOWERS Kearneyville, West Virginia dansgen@frontiernet.net Anne is from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia where she works in her studio designing and teaching baskets. She was a production basket maker for many years and she brings those skills into each basket she teaches. Ribbed basketry is her specialty, and some of her baskets have taken on a sculptural perspective in recent years. Anne has participated in many basketry exhibits, has received an award from Tamarack for being outstanding in the skills of basketry and has won many awards for her work. She is an active member of the National Basketry Organization. She taught on the 2014 basketry cruise. She is in her 33 rd years of weaving and is still fascinated with the woven form. CHAR CIAMMAICHELLA Aurora, Ohio charweave@roadrunner.com Char has been weaving almost 20 years, after becoming addicted after weaving one basket! She began selling her baskets at fine arts festivals with the help and encouragement from family and friends. After years of selling she began making her own designs and teaching at guild meetings. This has led to teaching at state conventions, conferences, and many other guilds. She weaves mainly with reed and loves playing with color placement to get many different and interesting patterns. She loves teaching and passing down the weaving techniques to all. She has been the coordinator for Winter Weave Conference in Ohio for over 15 years. GINA KIEFT Rothbury, Michigan gina@ginasbaskets.com I began weaving baskets through my local Community Education classes when my youngest son was a year old as a way to get out of the house and be with other women. I loved it from the start! I have been teaching basket classes for 14 years. I have over 90 patterns written and have had works published in two basket magazines. I won several awards in the exhibit rooms at the AMB Convention and the NCBA Convention. I am happy for the opportunity to teach my love of basketry around the mid-west and East coast. Many Girl Scouts have received their weaving badges through baskets I have taught. I enjoy teaching at the local Art s Council and Council on Aging as well as private groups. I teach basket weaving two days a week out of my home studio. I enjoy selling my baskets at local art fairs, several local stores and from my web site. I enjoy trying new mediums and new techniques.
10 SHARON KLUSMANN Tallmadge, Ohio Sharon Klusmann has been designing and teaching basket weaving around the country and locally in Tallmadge, OH for 28 years. It has been a full time business for many years now but she never tires of introducing the art of basket weaving to those who are truly beginners and to teach new techniques and tricks to more advanced students. Visit her website at ANNETTA KRAAYEVELD Beloit, Wisconsin krazyveld@hotmail.com; prairiewoodbasketry.com Annetta considers herself a weaver, a teacher and a life-long student of basketry. She began weaving in 1994 when she literally begged for a weaving lesson from a local basket weaver. Since that time, she has been largely self-taught, learning from both her mistakes and successes. Weaving because she can t stop, Annetta continues to find that the challenge of mastering new techniques and weaving the pictures in her mind keep basketry an exciting art form. Annetta s work has received a number of awards including first in Nantucket Class and Viewer s Choice at the Association of Michigan Basketweavers 2013 convention and first in Naturals Class at the Texas Basket Weavers Association s 2014 Convention. In addition to publishing patterns, Annetta has been teaching at basketry events and guild across the USA since Besides baskets, she loves the people she has met and the places she has visited through basketry. JUDITH SAUNDERS Norfolk, Virginia beachbasket@verizon.net Judith Saunders, a Virginia and North Carolina resident, is a retired art educator. Her interest in weaving threedimensional forms began in a workshop with Shereen LaPlantz in the early eighties. While traditional basketry techniques can be seen in her work, she leans toward non-traditional materials and more sculptural than functional forms with copper and hand-painted papers being her materials of choice. Judith is a juried professional member of the Artisans Center of Virginia and is currently a member of the National Basket Organization, the Handweavers Guild of America, as well as several regional associations and guilds. Her art work is included in the Plaited Basketry with Birch Bark book by Flo Hoppe, Vladimir Yarish and Jim Widess in the section featuring contemporary basket makers. Judith has taught bias plaiting workshops in Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. KATHY TESSLER Howell, Michigan tessler.kathy@gmail.com I LOVE teaching basketry! My goal as a teacher is to fill my students heads with as many tips and techniques as I possibly can during a class. Of course, I hope that they leave class with a basket that they really love. I have specialized in double base/double wall baskets for many years and have LOTS of patterns available for my designs in basketry shops nationwide and online. I also design totes that feature my leather handles. I also enjoy weaving with ash on a Shaker cathead mold and a square mold that my husband designed. My students have been enthusiastic about adding these treasures to their collections. I have taught at every AMB convention since I also teach at several other conventions and gatherings nationwide.
11 ANGIE WAGNER Kempton, Pennsylvania Angie Wagner was raised in a very rural section of Berks County, Pennsylvania. She continues to try to live as close to nature as possible. Inspired by the patterns and colors she sees every day, she works to create symmetry in contemporary forms from chaotic natural materials. She grows and harvests many of the accents used in her work, which led to the name Woven Branch Designs. She specializes in round reed work and gourd art, but is always exploring new materials and techniques. Operating The Country Seat, Inc. with her parents, Bill and Donna, keeps Angie immersed in the basketry world every day. LAURA LEE ZANGER Augusta, Georgia llzanger@aol.com Laura Lee Zanger has been designing baskets and writing patterns since October She has been teaching n the basketry convention circuit since 2002 and enjoys expressing her creativity in Cherokee twill designs and the Cherokee double weave technique. Her latest passion is for Chitimacha twill designs. Laura Lee has been weaving since 1986 and is a member and founder of the River Country Basket Guild in Augusta, Georgia. She shares her excitement and enthusiasm for weaving with everyone she encounters, maintaining the fascination of a child with every new idea, lesson and experience.
