The readings bring tgether scilgical thery and schlarship as they relate t cntemprary scial wrk and scial welfare issues. Tpics, chsen t illustrate the intersectin f the tw fields and t bring tgether expertise frm bth perspectives, may include pverty, scial stratificatin, and health. Beynd the Jint Scilgy/Scial Wrk students, the curse is expected t attract jint Scial Wrk/scial science students frm ther disciplines, as well as graduate students in ecnmics, public plicy, plitical science, psychlgy, and ther fields. The curse will include activities such as guest speakers, wrks in-prgress discussins, readings, and presentatins. The seminar will fcus in depth n such tpics as: The scilgical perspective n current U.S. sciety and issues pertinent t scial welfare plicy, services, and practice The divergence and cnvergence f scilgical and scial welfare/scial wrk perspectives n scial prblems in the U.S. such as pverty & inequality, family demgraphy, health & illness, immigratin and ethnic identity, scial service plicy and rganizatin Theretical and methdlgical appraches in cntemprary scial wrk research and in scilgy, hw t apply scilgical framewrks and perspectives t address dilemmas in scial welfare and scial wrk The need fr scilgical research and interdisciplinary influences fr cnstructing the knwledge base f scial welfare plicy, services, and practice Prerequisites: The curse is pen t dctral students in all departments and prgrams. Master s students in scial wrk, urban planning, public plicy, nursing, wmen s studies, African American studies, and ther related fields may als enrll with the permissin f the instructr.

Curse Organizatin and Assignments The curse will be cnducted as a seminar that cmbines shrt lectures by the instructr, presentatins by students, and semi-structured discussins f curse tpics and readings. T be successful, a seminar requires the full participatin f all members. This requires active and critical engagement with the curse material, including the assigned readings. In-Class participatin/presentatin (50%) Since the success f a seminar depends n the participatin and mutual respnsibility f all its members, it is expected that students will prepare the readings assignments fr each week, and participate regularly, fully, and in a manner that demnstrates respect fr their clleagues. Further details and a schedule f presentatins will be discussed in class. Due: Weekly Paper: Review and Integrative Essay (50%) Students will select a tpic f interest and develp a set f references that present a reasnably gd slice f the state f knwledge in basic research schlarship and applied practice/plicy in the field. The paper will develp a critical review f what we knw and what gaps in knwledge/further questins the studies raise. The paper will then begin t develp a research prgram that prpses t address the emerging questins/gaps. The paper shuld be written t a plicy research funder, such as a fundatin, aiming t develp new needed knwledge in this area. It shuld average 10 pp. duble-spaced in length. The ideal fr practicing integrative and innvative thinking wuld be t review bth scilgical and scial wrk/welfare/scial plicy articles/bk chapters that utilize a variety f methds and fcus n either place r peple-based analyses, r that debate individual-based vs. structure-based prcesses r slutins t the scial prblem f fcus. Time will be set aside in the seminar t discuss students prgress and prblems with their essays and t present t the class n yur review and develping paper.
