Welcome Note Hello from Mrs Barton.. Exciting news over half term week, work should be commencing to install the new swimming pool roof. Fingers crossed that everything goes to plan. Mrs Cafferkey has been busy liaising with all parties and completion of this project will be later in the spring term. it was wonderful to see so many children and parents at the Festival of Triangles this week. The children enjoyed a variety of activities based around using and making triangles, and families enjoyed helping and getting tangled up in a lot of sticky tape! The triangular food was a big hit and the sculpture made by children throughout the school was truly spectacular. Thank you Mr Le Conte, Mr Palmqvist and other Midfield staff who made this such an enjoyable event. A special thank you to Miss Pyle and her team from the PTA for supporting this event. Last Friday we celebrated Chinese Day with children experiencing fun activities linked to China. A special thank you to Ms Renfei Li and our families for supporting this. Photographs to follow in the next newsletter. We have reached the end of another term and I would like to wish you all an enjoyable and happy break. Festival of Triangles You would not believe so much fun and learning could be created from the triangle. What a great week. Not only did the children have the opportunities to explore triangles in depth in maths but also they were able to do a wide range of other activities all with the triangle as the focal point. These includes triangular related stories in literacy, patterns in art, some origami, triangular gymnastics and exploring activities around triangles. However, the highlight of the week was undoubtedly the Festival of Triangle evenings. It was great to see so many children, parents and staff all getting involved with the activities in the hall. With so much industry going on its not surprising that we were able to create one of the biggest tetrahedrons ever made. More importantly, it was a lot of fun. We would like to thank everyone involved for supporting this event and making it so much fun. From the PTA for organising the food, staff for giving up their evening to get involved, parents for joining in with the fun and of course for the children for getting stuck in. Mr Le Conte
Festival Of Triangles..
Classroom News Robins Robins Class have been enjoying The Festival of Triangles this week! As well as completing triangular puzzles in maths, we have looked at strengthening structures using triangles in DT, and forces which act on bridges in science. Also, our tetrahedrons (triangular pyramids) are ready for the big build! In English, we've written our 'Goldilocks with a Twist stories; they are truly fantastic pieces of creative writing - I am proud of every single one! Dragonflies This week Dragonflies have embraced triangle week in a variety of fun ways! We have been learning all about triangular numbers; we have drawn some triangular animals; and finally we have built 3D structures from straws and drumsticks!!!
Woodpeckers Woodpeckers the engineers! Bridge building was the name of the game this week, when tasked to design a bridge made from straws, that could hold a 400g weight! First we explored which shape would be the most effective. Before long we discovered that triangles were the best. You can see from our designs that we were very successful! Butterflies As part of our topic on Traditional Stories and Rhymes, we have been focusing on the story of Jack and The Beanstalk and The Gingerbread Man. Our butterflies have been busy planting beans and helping to look after them by watering them daily. We have also been decorating over very own gingerbread people, the best part was eating them afterwards. Owls Children in Owl Class have enjoyed Forest School this week. We made a plan of the eco-garden and looked at the different things that have been planted and are starting to grow. We then enjoyed a lovely warm cup of hot chocolate! all
Acorn We have been looking at changes in our topic Lets Cook. Today we all had a go at making Angel Delight and noticing what happened. Mrs Shrimpton then made us wash up our own things! Actually we really enjoyed that bit too! Beetles Last week was the 'Festival of Triangles Week' and in maths we have been hunting around the classrooms to find all of the different triangles there are around us. We have now learnt the properties and how to spot; equilateral, isosceles and scalene triangles.
Squirrels This week Squirrels had a special visitor who taught us about Kendo; a modern Japanese martial art which uses bamboo swords and protective armour. We were taught about some of the basic principles of Kendo, such as staying focused and always showing respect and we had the opportunity to learn some moves and try out the bamboo shinai. Oaks Oak Class have enjoyed taking part in our Festival of Triangles this week. We enjoyed Miss Beckingham s triangle challenge (shown below) where we had to move 2 sticks in order to make two triangles. We also had great fun working in small groups to create triangles with our bodies in P.E.
Foxes In foxes we have been exploring measuring using rulers and measuring jugs. We explored how to use a ruler correctly and how to read off a scale. Rabbits This week in Rabbits we have been exploring shape poems. We had some extremely creative language including similes and expanded noun phrases. The results were incredible!
Hedgehogs Last week Hedgehogs got the chance to take a visit to St Barnabas church. The Reverend Neil told us all about the different events that take place in the church, and we got the chance to explore and draw different features. It was very interesting and a great afternoon out! This week we have got really stuck into our festival of triangles. On Tuesday, we made tetrahedrons. They were tricky to make but look amazing! Badgers Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed the Festival of Triangles this week. We each made a tetrahedron out of straws and then combined our creations with our peers to make other bigger shapes. We also learned about the Bermuda Triangle and how mysterious things have happened there. We had a treat in Geography when Miss Simmons and Mr Mora came to talk to us about Colombia. We have since made an information booklet about the amazing country!
Grasshoppers and Bluebirds Grasshoppers and Bluebirds celebrated Maths Week with a fun drop in session for parents. We had a really good turn out with lots of grown ups and little brothers and sisters joining us to play maths games and take part in challenges. We made shapes out of straws to contribute the the whole-school Festival of Triangles. Some of us came back in the evening this week to help make a giant straw pyramid! In class we met Will the Wizard and worked together to solve a new maths potion challenge each day. Ladybirds This week we looked at Internet Safety. Ladybirds spoke about SID s four top tips when using the internet, which were: Don t talk to strangers when you are online. Be nice to people on the computer like you would in the playground. Don t tell people where you live. When you are unsure of a picture, game, app or video tell an adult. We then made our own Internet Safety posters to put up in class.
Book Week Book Week is taking place the week commencing 26 February During this week, there will be a number of other exciting activities taking place, including buddy reading, book swaps, assemblies and whole-school reading. Parents will also be invited to come and read with their children and their class. Thursday 1st of March is World Book Day and Book Tokens will be handed out to children. Friday 2nd March: Character Day dress up as your favourite story book character. Staff will also be taking part in the fun of celebrating the joy that literacy brings to our lives. (Please bring in a 1 donation) A letter with more details about book week will be sent home before the week commences. Gold Merit Awards The following children in Robins class have been awarded their gold merit badges. Ollie Williams, Joe Morris, Joshua Harrison and Rene Kolapo. Well done all of you. Hearts of Lions! Tuesday 6th February, was a day where I was fortunate enough to take a group of children from Year 5 to a tag rugby tournament, where 45 schools were in attendance. New to the game, the children went, knowing that they would be up against teams with more experience. This did not detract from the grit and determination they showed when facing all opposition and extremely cold weather! Although we didn't win anything, the children demonstrated values celebrated at Midfield: resilience, teamwork, respect and perseverance. Many a good try was scored. Lead by Tommy Lee (Captain),the squad including Alfie, Alfie, Mitchell, Nicola, Tise, Nathan, Nana, Shawn, Jake, Ruby (Vice- captain) and Laiba deserve a pat on the back. They should be very proud of themselves. Well done all!
Hockey News Last week, 9 children from years 4 and 5 headed off to an interschool hockey competition with Mrs Donnelly and Mrs Martins, where they competed with other schools from the Bromley borough. Natalie, Charlie, Dilara, Joe, Justin, Matilda, Hanna and Francesco showed fantastic sportsmanship and were a real credit to the school. It was a tough competition but they didn't give up - Well done all!
