1 T h r e e R i v e r s F e d e r a t i o n Newsletter 30 th September 2016 Swallowtails In English Swallowtails have been learning about Beatrix Potter, we have been acting out the tale of Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin. Members of staff also recall seeing Mrs Tiggy Winkle walking round the school! In Maths we have been concentrating on Addition, subtraction and time. We have focussed on our daily routines (EYFS morning, afternoon and night) and have used our knowledge of our routine to help us learn analogue and digital times. In Geography we have been learning about the differences between the Lake District (where Beatrix Potter wrote her animal tales) and Surlingham and have drawn pictures to show the differences between the two locations. In Art/ D.T. we have been designing our own character base on Beatrix Potter characters. In Science we have been looking at seasonal changes. In Music we have been learning about rhythm. 2 Marsh Harriers English - The children have written their own Just So stories in the style of Rudyard Kipling. They have thought carefully about the tone of their writing, their language choices and the moral of their stories. We are currently creating Mowgli's Guide to the Jungle where we have been story mapping and adding actions to our oral story (see photos) Maths - We have worked hard this half term to consolidate our understanding of the four operations. The children have worked hard to find an efficient method that works for them. Our multiplication tables are really developing and they are using these to help with their corresponding divisions facts. Inquiry - We have started our inquiry of the Ancient Maya civilization. They have looked at the chronology of the Mayas, the geographical features and now looking into farming.

3 Dragonflies Dragonflies have been investigating mixtures and solutions in science. Many experiments have been carried out to discover if materials are soluble or insoluble. We looked at how to separate dissolved solutions through the processes of evaporation and condensation. We will be working towards designing and conducting our own experiments later in the term on reversible and irreversible changes. The children have been particularly enjoying tag rugby and gymnastics during PE lessons. Ask your child how long they can now stand on one leg! Barn Owls So far this term, Barn Owls have been learning about the Romans, following the successful trip to Time & Tide Museum and Burgh Castle last term. They have linked this to Pompeii and explored the workings of a volcano. Using a range of resources, the children have made their own erupting volcanoes with some fantastic results. The children discovered how volcanoes are formed and what happens when they erupt. As part of their English, the children have discussed in depth whether it is safe to live near a volcano and produced a discussion text highlighting both sides of the argument. Barn Owls have also been learning about how to use the internet safely and are currently creating their own internet safety messages that they will perform to Cygnets class in the near future.

4 Otters Mrs Rix, together with the help of pupils, has made a lovely caravan in the Otters classroom. The children love sitting in the comfortable armchairs by the fire having a quiet read. Reminders Could parents/carers please make sure that all girls and boys with long hair come to school with it tied back please. When on or around school premises could parents/carers please ensure that appropriate language is used at all times around the children. Lost Property at Rockland St Mary Please look through the mountain of lost property in the reception area at Rockland. We have plenty of items that have lost their owners and need to be reunited!

5 Attendance The attendance for both schools for this week is:- Rockland Surlingham Cygnets % Swallowtails % Barn Owls % Otters % Dragonflies % Marsh Harriers 96.33% School Total % School Total % Achievements Alfie, Year 5 at Surlingham, achieved 5th Kyu ranking in Shotokan Karate on 11th September and became a purple belt. Alfie did really well and passed his purple belt with an overall Merit grading. Alfie trains with ESKA - Eastern Shotokan Karate Association - and is now aiming for 4th Kyu ranking, which would make him a purple & white belt. Well done Alfie!

6 Thank You A big thank you to Mrs Pulfer, for helping us to make Surlingham a lovely bright colourful school. Rockland School Gates When entering/leaving school premises at Rockland please use the new green gate only. The old entrance is no longer in use and there is no facility to open it from the office. On wet days please feel free to use the sheltered area near the Margaret Mack Room but access to the school will remain through the green gate.
