1 Wortham Primary School News On The Ninth 9th November 2015 Welcome to our Celebratory Newsletter Dear Parent/Carer, Welcome to November s issue of News on the Ninth! We have had an action-packed month since our last edition including news from the Yr. 6 residential trip to Aylmerton! I d like to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs Widdeson to our school staffing team. Mrs Widdeson joins us as a teaching assistant in Bumble bee class and I am sure that we will all make her feel very welcome. A new feature in this month s News on the Ninth is our Writer of the Month section. Each month we will choose a KS1 and a KS2 child as our writer of the month and their writing will be published. We will have a different theme to explore across a range of text types and we would like to welcome all of the children to enter and enjoy the writing process! 2 O Otters create their very own tapestries! Otter class have produced some fantastic work as part of their locality study on Bury St Edmunds. They have created their own tapestries depicting scenes from famous legends associated with the historical town. The children will be visiting Bury St Edmunds as part of their learning along with Barn Owl class this Thursday. Whilst there, they will visit the cathedral and have the opportunity to compare their own creations with the originals that they will see there. Well done Otters, we love your creations. What the children say! Jack I was very proud of my stitching, it went better than I thought! What the children say! Oscar Blending colours and outlining was really good fun! Emma I liked how it turned out!

3 Man on the moon! Bumblebees and Hedgehogs really enjoyed their recent cinema experience by watching the first moon landing. This was part of their topic on Exploration and the children have enjoyed learning about land, sea, air and space explorers! They had wonderful questions to ask and Mrs Clarke and Mrs Erith made some fantastic observations of their learning. Some of the wonderful comments made by the children are listed below. Carl:: They had parachutes so they can fly out in space! Trinity: I thought it was quite cool when the astronaut danced Molly: I saw a rocket going up in the air! Elliott: I can see the moon! Gracie: There was an astronaut making a funny noise. He heard a funny voice! Kayden: I can see a dragon rocket!

4 Yr. 6 Residential trip Well done and congratulations to all of the Year 6 children on their recent residential trip to Aylmerton Field study centre in North Norfolk. The children were joined by peers from Mellis, Occold and Thorndon Primary schools. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to form friendships with other children in preparation for High school. Mrs Flatman, Mrs Yaxley and Miss Gough accompanied the children on the school trip and were so impressed with their enthusiasm, resilience and positivity throughout the week. We all appreciated that a week away from home was going to be challenging for Yr. 6, however they coped brilliantly! The children participated in a number of different activities throughout the week including orienteering, zip lining, team building pursuits, visiting Cromer, visiting the seals on Blakeney point and mud walking through the river Glaven. They challenged themselves with all of the activities, enjoyed many high points and were very proud of themselves. The staff have had some wonderful feedback from the instructors at the study centre who said the children were delightful and tried really hard. This was lovely to hear.. I would like to thank the children for a fantastic week away on behalf of Mrs Yaxley, Miss Gough and myself and I would also like to say well done. A huge thank you must go to Mrs Yaxley and to Miss Gough for giving their time and energy to help the children to enjoy such a wonderful trip. Well done everyone!

5 Inspiring Writing! KS1 Writing Competition! We are very excited to announce that we will be having our very first KS1 writing competition! There will be fantastic prizes and opportunities to have writing published in the newsletter and on the school website. Our theme for this month is CHRISTMAS You can write Fiction or Non Fiction: Here are some wonderful ideas: Write a Christmas poem Write a short story about Christmas Eve. Write a description of Fr. Christmas Design a Christmas menu. Write a Christmas Haiku poem. Entries to be given to Mrs Flatman by Monday 7th December Have fun!! Calling all writers in KS2!! Would you like the opportunity to have your writing published? Would you like to have create a wonderful piece of writing that will inspire others? Then this is the opportunity for you! KS2 Theme of the month is : Winter You can write Fiction or Non Fiction: Here are some wonderful ideas. Write a Winter poem Write a story set in Winter Write a report on an animal who lives in cold environment. Write a winter recipe Use a winter picture to describe. Entries to be given to Mrs Flatman by Monday 7th December Have fun!!

6 Walking with the wounded! Welcome Mrs Widdeson Well done to all of the children from Barn Owl class who recently supported the Walking with the wounded charity walkers on their 1000 mile challenge across mainland Britain. The children had raised money for the charity through their contact with Duncan Slater, earlier this year. The walkers stopped and spent some time with the children answering their questions and describing their experience. The children really enjoyed it and it was a lovely surprise for the walkers. Thanks to all of the parents and Grandparents who helped escort the children to Redgrave on the day and to Mrs Bloye, Mrs Hinton and Mrs Pratt. Thanks also to Mr Paine for the information about the walk taking place. It was very enjoyable for all! I would like to take this opportunity to Welcome Mrs Nikki Widdeson to the school staffing team. Mrs Widdeson will be working with the children in Bumble bee class. She loves animals and has a Labrador called Cooper as well as a bearded dragon. Welcome Mrs Widdeson, it is lovely to have you here!

7 Many thanks to the Chisman family for representing the school on Remembrance Sunday at the service held in Wortham Church. The family laid a Poppy wreath at the War memorial from the school. Due to our rising pupil numbers I am aware that the start and end of day can be very busy. I would be very grateful if parents could drive in slowly to park in the mornings and drive away slowly at the end of the day.
