Key stage 2 Revise, relax. Aim high!
Hello Have you heard about the Move On Move Up project? Your teachers, your family and friends, want you to achieve the best results that you can. Test time can be stressful, we know. So there s lots you and your family can do to make it easier and that s where the Move On, Move Up project comes in. You ll achieve your best results with a mix of good quality study and fun free time with your friends. Read on and you ll discover some great ways to do just that. Oh, and just so your parents/guardians know what you re going through and what they can do to help, we ve produced a handy guide for them too. You might want to make sure they read it. FREE study sessions & FREE skate or swim MATHEMATICS SCIENCE English We ll also be putting on some special key stage 2 study sessions! Your local libraries are available for you to really get stuck into some revision. Once you ve had a brain workout, we ll give you a FREE one time leisure pass so you can enjoy a swim or skate session on us. We ll also be putting on some special Key Stage 2 study sessions at Doncaster s Central Library and Doncaster Dome where a literacy mentor will be available to help with your revision. You can take your revision books or use the library s computers - there are so many great revision websites to use. We ve listed some of them further on in this booklet! 2 Doncaster.gov.uk/momu donnymomu 3
Getting the most out of a study Session Can you go to study sessions at your school? DON T FORGET to bring your revision notes and a pen! come alone, with friends or a family member and you can attend as many study sessions as you like. Don t forget your revision notes and a pen. If you have a mobile phone or device you may bring it to access the internet during the sessions as there are many great revision websites you can visit, including Frog Play (see pages 10/11 for links). Yes, we know, spending more time at school is not what you want to hear. But being well prepared for your test will really take the heat off. Find out what sessions your school offers, and make the most of them. Go with your friends after all, you re all in it together. 4 5
There s no right or wrong way to revise just your way! Don t STRESS about it! Some write pages and pages of notes; others read from books out loud, perhaps recording it and playing it back to themselves. Whichever way you do it, make sure it s the best way for you. If you don t understand something, tackle it head on. Research it online, ask at a study session and get it in the bag. Get a group of friends together and explain/discuss revision topics to each other. Try visualising things as pictures or rhymes to help you remember. Stress. Nobody needs it, nobody wants it. It s that nasty feeling in the pit of your stomach when you can barely remember your own name, never mind what Trigonometry is! Some cope better than others, but we could all use a few pointers to ease the pressure. Here are just a few that might help... Get organised. Write out what you re going to revise and when. Then stick to it. Plan in some regular treats. Get some exercise. When you re alert you can remember things more easily. Don t think you have to revise all day. Take the dog for a walk or listen to music whatever chills you out. Revise something you re good at, then something you re not so good at. It ll help you feel positive. Make sure you see your friends regularly, and have a no talking about exams rule. Top 5 Stress Busters... 1 Eat and sleep well 2 Plan your revision 3 Start your plan early 4 Build in free time 5 Get out and exercise You can t start your revision plan early enough. 6 7
Be positive you can do it! Little things make all the difference Plan for success and you will achieve it! Be kind to yourself. Put in some effort and come results day, you ll be flying high. Enjoy some early nights to keep that fuzzy-head feeling at bay. If you get stuck sleep on it. You ll be amazed at how much clearer it will be in the morning. Be positive tell yourself you can do it, put the work in and you will. Leaving your revision to the night before is a definite no-no. Life can t go on as normal during tests; you have to sacrifice some free time if you want to be successful. A quick glance at your notes isn t going to cut it. Write them on revision cards so you can even revise on the go. Try not to beat yourself up if you have a bad day. Take a break and come back to it later. This is your chance to show everyone what you re made of. Without a plan, you ll be splashing around in the dark. Nobody wants that for you, so take a look at the ideas below and see which ones could work for you. Take advantage of as many revision classes as you can. Help is there for you all you have to do is grab it. Know your target grades and what you need to do to achieve them. Spend more time on the areas you need to improve and this will really pay off in the exam. You can bet your life that these things will crop up on an examination paper. Revise in a quiet room to help you ignore distractions. Stick to your timetable but build in some wiggle room. Check your plan with your teachers to make sure you ve covered everything. Get your family on board. They want the best for you so make sure they read the Supporting Students Guide sent with this pack so they know how they can help you achieve your goals. 8 9
Eat, sleep revise, repeat Learn as you play get into Frog Play You need to be in good health to do well in your test. Here s how to get you on top of your game: Your brain needs calories for energy. Work hard and you ll burn them off. Eating regular meals and snacks help you to avoid any sugar spikes. Get an early night and you ll be refreshed and ready for the exams ahead. There is such a thing as too much revision. Free time is just as important as study time make sure you have a balance of both. Check out these great maths revision websites ks2bitesize/maths /maths.php interactive_games.htm These reading and writing websites are very helpful ks2bitesize/english/ /spellits/home_y6flash.shtml /ambleweb/lookcover /lookcover.html /spag.php You may already use Frog Play (I Am Learning) in school. Make sure you have your login and get online. Frog Play is designed to be fun and interactive and you won t even realise how much you re learning. Get logged on! Make sure you login. If you don t know your login details ask your school! Can you improve your chances of getting your grades or bettering them even whilst having fun? You bet - and all it takes is just an hour or so as part of your daily revision. Get your family to join you in some of the games, and you re likely to get even more out it. Watch out though, things could get quite competitive! And most important of all! Don t forget to plan a fabulous end of test celebration with all your friends, you will absolutely deserve it! 10 11
Don t forget our free library revision sessions Doncaster.gov.uk/momu donnymomu Move On Move Up is delivered in partnership with all Doncaster Schools, Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust, Doncaster Rovers FC - Club Doncaster and Club Doncaster Foundation, Doncaster Council and Doncaster Libraries
