4 The why behind these whiteboards: I pride myself on creating a classroom that genuinely feels like a family. A place where students love to be and love the people that they're with. A place where students set goals and encourage other students on their journey of meeting their own goals, too. I want my students to feel like they are in a safe, judgement-free zone where they are respected by not just me, but by their peers as well. Each time my class completes one of these boards, I feel like my class is getting that much closer to being a true family. Students need DAILY reminders about the importance of goal-setting, reflecting, friendship, and community. They need YOU to give them opportunities to see how simple actions can truly make someone's day. They need YOU to make them feel loved and respected, and to show that same love and respect for their peers. If you can get your students all supporting and fighting for each other, they're going to carry that with them for the rest of their lives. These simple messages are so meaningful to my students. They call for my kiddos to: -Promote kindness in your classroom, school, and community -Motivate and encourage their peers -Think deeply about themselves and their learning -Set goals and think about their future -Reflect on their character, actions, and behavior They are also a great tool for me to learn about my students and reflect on my own lessons and teaching practices. I can't tell you how many important things I've learned about my kiddos using these whiteboard messages in my classroom! 4
5 How to use: Personally, my students answer these prompts in the morning. If they see that there is a prompt on the board, they can answer it any time during our morning work time. I only allow three students to be at the board at once. Keep in mind, I use my actual whiteboard, so the kiddos are up there for a few minutes writing down their responses. If your students don t have to actually write a response on the board, you may not need to limit it to three. You can also print out these prompts and have your students glue them in their journals. Please make sure to discuss expectations with your students before-hand. Make it clear that they are to answer kindly, seriously, and genuinely. Also, for each pick a peer prompt, they should try to pick someone knew each time. If they struggle with picking peers for themselves, assign them. frequency: On average, I complete TWO prompts per week; that s what works best for my classroom. If I were to complete a prompt every single day, I fear that the whiteboards would lose their fun factor. With that said, you could absolutely complete a prompt every single day to make it part of your routine! That is the exact reason I included enough slides for every single day of the year. Figure out what works best for you and roll with it, friend! Displaying: Bring the slides up on your smartboard or projector. Allow students to answer on the actual slides OR write on a sticky note/scrap of paper. Students can simply stick their response under the prompt! 5
6 Discussion: It is totally up to you if you want to discuss these boards after completion. We probably discuss 50% of our boards, as some are much more meaningful than others. I often put two kiddos in charge to come up and read the responses aloud. They can either pick a few or read them all depending on the amount of time we have available. now what?: You can erase/close out of your prompt after all of your students answer, or leave it up for the remainder of the morning/day. If you don t need your SmartBoard or whiteboard for the remainder of the day, feel free to keep it up! Don t feel obligated to keep their responses. Keeping Track: Keep track of the slides you use by checking them off on your overview sheets. I included tracking pages for each day of the week, so you can easily find the slides you need. Use the hyperlinks to quickly access the slide you want! Print the overview pages and check the boxes you already completed. Mark off the prompts you complete to keep track!
