Heartbeat With You 25 GROUPS: Creating a safe place to connect. WHAT YOU DO 1. Go to myfreedom.org/kidsleaders to do the following: 1. Read through K-5th large group leader guide several times throughout the week to familiarize yourself with what to say, how long it should take, and the order of activities. 2. Watch the Bible story video. 3. Preview the worship songs and get familiar with the motions for this weekend. 2. Follow up with your campus lead with any questions about the weekend! 3. Arrive on time to tag in briefly with the team, gather your materials, and connect with early arrivers. 4. Teach kids about God s Word with energy! WHAT YOU NEED (provided for you) -Bible (bring your own) - Autocorrect activity pages (1 per group) -pens or pencils (1 per group) -bucket -rocks -balloon -sticky notes -sharpie

2 CUE: Play high energy music as kids enter and Freedom Kids Logo (#1). CUE: FK countdown (#2) 5 UTES BEFORE THE GATHERING BEGINS. (New Countdown) OPENER When the 5 minute countdown gets down to 1 minute, have the kids start to make their way to large group. Leader is at the front welcoming them. Lead kids in big countdown from 10 seconds! CUE: Operating System Graphic (#3). (Leader should be standing ON the stage (no matter how many kids) and welcome with lots of energy.) Gooood Morning Freedom Kids! I m so excited to see ALL of you here today! Today is another day at our new series called Operating System. How many of us in here like technology? Me too! Inside of each ipad, phone, xbox is an operating system. And that system is what tells the technology how to work! But we all know that those systems need to be updated from time to time. And the same goes with us. We ALL have an operating system inside of us and we ALL need to update the way we REact. That s why this month we are talking about Self-Control. CUE: Self Control Graphics (#4). Self-control is choosing to do what you should even when you don t want to. Instead of just doing what you FEEL like doing, you stop and think about what you SHOULD do. Self-control can keep you from hurting yourself and others. It can keep you from saying or doing something you might regret. That s why God wants us to keep our cool! You know what sometimes makes me lose my cool? An Autocorrect Fail! GAME Autocorrect Fail Hold up your phone. You know like when you re speaking out loud to tell your phone or your tablet what you want your message to say, but then you look at your message after you ve sent it and it looks nothing like what you had in mind? Sometimes the phone changes the text to something you never meant to say. Those texts can be pretty ridiculous... and pretty funny, too! CUE: Autocorrect Fail Graphic (#5). In fact, I have an idea. I bet you could help me fix some text messages to some people. Since I always get autocorrected and end up sending the wrong thing, maybe you could give me some pointers. Who s in? (Pause for response.) Okay, let me give each of your Small Group Leaders a copy of my messages. Hand an Autocorrect Sheet (on a clipboard, if possible) and a pen to each Leader. I m afraid autocorrect made these texts pretty confusing. You ll work with your small group to see if you can figure out what I MEANT to say, and then you ll fix it. We ll start with message one. Leaders, when I say, Go, you ll listen to your group and write what it SHOULD say under the bolded words. Raise your hand when you think you ve got it, and I ll call on you to tell us the answer. Don t move on to the other messages yet. Just do number one for now! My first message is to my friend who wants to go to the movies today. I actually have plans after church, so I need to go later tonight. Let s look at what I sent. CUE: Autocorrect Slide 1a (#6). Read the message on the screen and allow small group to come up with their answers. When ready to see the correct words, CUE Autocorrect 1b (#7).

3 WORSHIP LEADER: Continue for texts 2 and 3. CUE: Autocorrect 2a-3b (#8-11). Comment on the words as you play. Thanks, everybody. I think I need to go back and send some corrected texts now. Don t you? Our words really do matter! Leaders, I ll take your sheets. All of you can stand up and get ready to sing to our awesome God! CUE: Song 1 (#12) CUE: Song 2 (#13) LEADER: Wow! You guys are looking awesome today. Find as many people as you can, tell them your name and your favorite piece of technology to play with! Go! CUE: 1 minute countdown (#14). When the countdown finishes, CUE: Football Adlib video (#15). FOOTBALL SUNDAY ANNOUNCEMENT Wow! Those football players have some really interesting words, don t they? Speaking of football we have a really special Sunday coming up in TWO WEEKS! It s called Football Sunday! We are gonna have inflatables, tattoos, hot dogs, and everything will be about FOOTBALL! So here s what you need to do make sure you re her on Sunday, February 3rd AND bring a friend with you! It s going to be epic. LEADER: CUE: Operating System Graphic (#16). I m thrilled to be here today to talk to you about self-control choosing to do what you should even when you don t want to. This month we re focusing on the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament of the Bible. (Hold up Bible.) Proverbs is a book of wisdom from God that includes wise sayings most of which God gave to King Solomon. This book gives us wisdom on how to live and how to [Basic Truth] make the wise choice. A lot of the proverbs are sayings that use picture words. They give us pictures of things in life that can help us to understand the truth of what God wants us to know. Today s verse is like that. It s Proverbs 12:18. Here s what it says. (Open your Bible.) CUE: Proverbs 12:18 NIrV Graphic (#17). The words of thoughtless people cut like swords. But the tongue of wise people brings healing. Wow. That verse makes it super clear. Our words have a lot of power! When we use words thoughtlessly when we say things without thinking our words have the power to cut like a sword. That doesn t mean that our words magically turn into a sword and cut someone. It s a word picture. It means that our words have the power to hurt people in the same way a sword can cut and hurt a person. Think about a time when someone said something mean to you maybe they made fun of the way you were dressed or something you said, or maybe they laughed at how you played a sport or a video game. How did you feel? It hurt, didn t it? Almost like you had been cut by a sword.

4 THOUGHTLESS WORDS It can be really easy to let thoughtless words come out of our mouth. Those are words that come out before we truly think about what we are saying. And thoughtless words carry a lot of weight. I need some help up here today. Select one small kid volunteer. Have them stand on the stage with you and give them a bucket to hold in their one hand. You see, thoughtless words are words like pick out the 2 rocks with a word phrase written on them and read it out loud; place each one in the bucket after you read it. These are words that hurt us and weigh us down. What are some other thoughtless words? Select 2-3 kids to give you an example. Write them down on a rock using the sharpie and place them in the bucket. Imagine that we kept filling this bucket up with all of the thoughtless words we ve heard before or ever said to someone. (To kid volunteer) Would it get pretty heavy? What if you had to carry that around ALL day? BONGO THE MONKEY (VIDEO) Jesus, himself, knew just how powerful words can be. And today my friend Bongo The Monkey is here to teach us some stories about how Jesus used his words in the Bible. What do you guys think? Did Jesus use thoughtless words or healing words? Let s find out CUE: Bongo Story Video (#18). Wow. That Bongo sure is an interesting monkey but we sure did learn some really cool words from Jesus! They were SO powerful. And there are some many more places in the Bible that Jesus used powerful words. Now I know what you re thinking, I ll never be able to go up to the ocean and tell all of the waves to stop. Yeah, probably not! That s because we aren t Jesus. BUT we do have the same power when we speak to others and to ourselves. We have the power to bring healing words just like Jesus. HEALING WORDS Hand the ballon to the kid volunteer on stage (while they are still holding the bucket of rocks). Healing words are like this balloon. They lift people up when they are sad, they encourage people. Healing words sound like this pick out 2 sticky notes with a word phrase written on them and read it out loud; place each one on the balloon after you read it. These words lift us up! The truth is we don t ever really know what is going on in someone s day. Sometimes people can be really sad and hurt on the inside but they don t show it on the outside. Sometimes people can be carrying heavy words that have hurt them (point to bucket) and we don t even know it. That s why it s so important to use our self-control force field and use healing words. What are some other examples of healing words? Select 2-3 kids to give you an example. Write them down on a sticky note using the sharpie and place them on the balloon.

5 CLOSER Bottom Line Just like it says in our verse from Proverbs, words have the power to hurt or to heal. God has given us a way to communicate with others using words, but He wants us to use those words to help and encourage, not to tear down and destroy. That s why as followers of God we have a very important choice to make that requires a LOT of self- control sometimes. Check out our bottom line for today. CUE: Bottom Line Graphic (#19). Choose your words carefully. Say that out loud with me! Say it out loud together. Let s give it up for our brave volunteer with some strong muscles! (Initiate applause.) If we re honest, sometimes we might feel like using words to hurt someone. Maybe they said something that hurt you. Maybe you re frustrated because something isn t going your way. Maybe you didn t get invited to a friend s birthday party. Maybe you can t do something fun right now because you have to do your chores or homework first. When you re upset, it s easy to say hurtful things to people without thinking about it. It s important to control what you say so that your words are lifting others up and not weighing them down. Choose your words carefully. Remember self-control isn t about doing what you FEEL like. It s doing what you should even when you don t want to. Words can hurt our friends, teachers, and even our Moms and Dads. OR they can lift them up and encourage. You guys were awesome listeners today! It s time for small group!
