Gratitude Lesson 2 of 4 Gratitude Speaks Thanks (Gratitude says Thank You for specific, individual things, both large and small, that others do for you.) Preparation Affirmation: I show gratitude when I speak thanks for things others do for me. Print on cardstock one copy each of pages 4 and 5. Print one copy of the age-appropriate assignment for each child involved. Review and Introduction Ask: What block did we add to your character wall last week? Say: A block of gratitude. Let s say last week s affirmation together. I show gratitude when I observe the things others do for me. Now say something else with me. Say thank you. Say it again. Thank you. Say: Maybe you already know why we said thank you. Listen to our story and see if you are right. Tell this story in your own words, changing it to fit your listeners culture and ages. Jacob, Emily, and Madison were spending a year in Japan with Mother and Father. They were staying at Grandmother s house. Grandmother called all three children by Japanese names, but that was just for fun. She did many things to be sure the children had fun during their visit. Like this morning when she asked, How would you like to visit a Japanese zoo? Oh yes! Emily s eyes danced. I love animals! Jacob was not as excited as his four-year-old sister, but since they had no school today, a trip to the zoo might be interesting. He wished Madison could go. At ten years, she was only a year older than he, not five years younger like Emily. Madison had to go to school today, however, and had already gone. He went to put on his big green hoodie. He smoothed the front so everyone could see the white 3 even if they didn t know that was his soccer number. Jacob and Emily had to wait while Grandmother dressed in her kimono. They liked her beautiful kimonos and the obi sashes she wore with them. Today, she wore a bright red obi with a gold colored kimono. She wore funny white socks, too, with shiny red zori (pronounced zoṙ-ē). The zori looked like dress-up thong sandals. Jacob watched her, and thought how much time she spent dressing special for them. We ll take the bus, Grandmother said when she was ready. It will take us right to the zoo. Are there a lot of different animals at Ueno Zoo? Emily asked.

2 Oh yes, said Grandmother. Ueno Zoo has more kinds of animals than any other zoo in Japan. We ll see the usual lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, and apes, but we ll also see things like zebras, elephants, hippos, goats, sheep, pigs, ostriches, and giant pandas. I think you ll especially like the Japanese snow monkeys. Jacob grinned. They re called snow monkeys because they re white right? He watched Grandmother as she laughed cheerily. They aren t white, said Grandmother. She motioned with her hands as she described the monkeys. They re grayish-brown with hot-pink faces. They have short grayish-brown tails. Then why are they called snow monkeys? Jacob wanted to know as the bus stopped. Grandmother led the way to the door and away from the bus before she answered. Snow monkeys live in parts of Japan where snow covers the ground a couple of months every year. No other kind of monkey lives that far north or in a climate that cold. She pretended to shiver as she said it, and then smiled her beautiful smile. They spent the whole day at the zoo. At first, Jacob watched Grandmother walk, and thought how hard it must be to wear a kimono and walk with such tiny steps. Then he stopped watching and ran with Emily from one cage to another. At noon, Grandmother bought them lunch, and Jacob saw her sit down to rest while he and Emily fed the elephants. At last, they visited the snow monkeys. A baby snow monkey cried for his mother when he fell in the pool. The children laughed as his mother reached down, scooped it quickly from the water, and plopped it onto her back. Then she raced across high rocks to the sunshine where her baby could dry. At the end of the afternoon, Grandmother led them across a bridge to the gate. As they walked, Jacob thought about all the things Grandmother had done for them that day. He turned to her and said, Grandmother, thank you for a great day at the zoo. I noticed that you took time to dress special for us. Thank you. I watched you walk all day with tiny steps. Thank you. I noticed how you chose a lunch we would like. Thank you. I noticed that you got tired, and had to rest. Thank you for that, too. You re a nice grandmother. Grandmother smiled. You re a nice grandson, she said, and you show gratitude very nicely!. When they got home, Madison was waiting for them. You ll never guess what happened at school, she said. Then, without waiting for anyone to guess, Madison hurried on. We had a surprise visit from a traveling aquarium! A big truck brought more than 200 ocean creatures in special fish tanks. They told us about the creatures, and then they let us touch them. I touched a catshark, a starfish, and an octopus! That s wonderful, Madison, said Grandmother. Do you know who planned the treat for your class? Madison nodded. Yes, I do and that s why something else happened at school. Kids from nine classes were in the assembly hall to see the traveling aquarium, so the man who brought the aquarium was using a microphone to talk to us. I watched him, and I observed that he was doing a really nice thing for us. Then I went and asked him who invited him. He told me the names of two teachers. I thought about how nice it was for them to plan such a treat, and I asked the man if I could use his microphone. As Madison stopped for breath, a big smile turned up the corners of her mouth. He let me use the mike, and I told everyone to listen. I told them we should thank the man for taking time to come and show us the creatures. All together, we said thank you to him. Then I told them the names of the teachers that planned the treat for us. I said we should tell them thank you, too. It sounded like a big choir saying thank you to the teachers.

3 Grandmother smiled and patted Madison s hand. You exercised gratitude, Madison, and you helped others exercise gratitude, too. What do you mean? Madison asked. You show gratitude when you speak thanks for things others do for you, Grandmother told her. It s part of good manners, and it s part of having character. Boys and girls who have character always observe the things people do for them. They always speak their thanks for what they observe. They might say thank you, or they might say something like I appreciate you because you did this for me, or I m glad about you because you did this for me. Emily gave Grandmother a sad look. I didn t show gratitude, Grandmother, but I was glad about the things you did for us today. It s just that Jacob said it first. It s never too late to speak thanks, Emily, Grandmother said. It doesn t matter if someone else has already spoken thanks, either. If you saw something I did for you, you can speak thanks anytime. Emily thanked Grandmother then, and they all went to change clothes before dinner. At dinner, Emily kept looking and looking at Mother. Finally, she put down her chopsticks and said, Mother, I m glad that you wash my clothes for me. Thank you. Mother looked surprise, but she smiled and said, That s very kind of you Emily. Jacob frowned at his fried rice a moment. Then he turned to Father and said, Father, I keep forgetting to tell you, but I m very grateful that you brought us to Japan for a year. I m grateful, too, that you work hard every day to earn money so we can have the things we need. Thank you. Suddenly, everyone was speaking thanks to someone else. Mother spoke thanks to Grandmother for the flower arranging lessons she gave her. Father spoke thanks to Grandfather for moving all his things out of one room so there would be sleeping space for them all. Back and forth they went, exercising gratitude toward one another. Apply the story in age appropriate words. Holding up the picture from page 4, read the caption: Gratitude Speaks Thanks. You show gratitude when you speak thanks for things others do for you. You probably speak thanks when you get a gift from someone. It s exciting to get a gift, and you want to speak thanks for the gift. That s one way to show gratitude. There are many other ways, too. Talk about the things people do for you at home. How would you exercise gratitude for those things? Talk about the things people do for you at school. How would you exercise gratitude for those things? What other people do things for you? What do they do? How can you exercise gratitude? Holding up the picture from page 5, read the caption: Gratitude Speaks Thanks. You show gratitude when you speak thanks for things others do for you. Usually, one person speaks thanks to one other person. Madison did something different. She got many people to join her in speaking thanks. You can show gratitude as a group when you have observed something someone did for you. A whole class can speak thanks to a teacher, not just for a special treat, but for explaining something difficult maybe in mathematics. Say our affirmation together with me. I show gratitude when I speak thanks for things others do for me. Close by handing out assignment sheets.
