St. Michael s CE Primary School Friday 13th May 2016 School Values: Respect, Hope, Trust, Love, Peace, Joy Dear Parents Well done to Year 6 who have tried very hard this week with their SATS. As expected, the tests were very hard, but all we expected was for them to put in their best effort and they certainly have done that. Now that we have an astro-turf children will no longer be allowed to change into trainers during lunchtime to play football. Please ensure children come to school with black school shoes and the correct socks boys should be wearing plain grey socks and girls should be wearing white socks. You may or may not be aware that from September 2016 all Lewisham roads (apart form the red routes) will become 20mph. To spread the word about the change Lewisham is running a poster competition and the school has received a bag of prizes to be given to the winners. All children are encouraged to design a poster at home to advertise this message. The posters will be sent to and used by, the Road Safety and Sustainable Transport Department in Lewisham. The Eco Council will be the judges. The closing date will the Monday the 6th June (first Monday after half term). On Thursday, 19th May we will have our favourite s menu to encourage take-up for census day with... Fish fingers, chicken nuggets or macaroni cheese with chips, peas or baked beans followed by ice cream cone or fruit lolly. Important dates Sunday 15th May: Swimming Gala at the Bridge Leisure Centre. Tuesday 17th May: Archdeacon Alistor Cutting to do church worship. Tuesday 24th May: Reception trip to Greenwich Observatory. Half term: Monday 30th May Friday 3rd June Reminder: School will be shut on Thursday the 23rd June due to EU referendum day.

It was an enjoyable experience. I loved how everyone came together in the end and we all worked as a team. The school trip was fun and I really enjoyed it and I've experienced something new. We learnt the Greek story of how the peacock got the eyes on their feathers. We all learnt something new. The school trip was fun. I enjoyed the drama and making the masks. It was brilliant! On the school trip, I enjoyed acting out being Hera Queen of gods.

At St Michael s we practice a different art skill every term based around a theme. Last term we did sketching using poems as an inspiration. This term the children were exploring painting, using Spring as a theme. The children in reception were inspired to paint images of baby chicks after they had spent some time watching their lifecycle. They enjoyed reading the poem What is an egg? By Lucia Kemp Henry Year 1 have been working really hard creating paintings of a blossom tree. We took our inspiration from the poem called Love Blossom. Year 2 Sapphire Children were inspired to paint Spring flowers after looking at the painting Vase of Tulips by Claude Monet.

Y2 Emerald created their own version of Monet s famous Water Lily Pond. First they used masking tape to make the bridge. Then the children used a variety of different colours to capture the scene of the greenery and water whilst adding reds, pinks and purples for the lilies. The Year 3 children looked at the work of David Hockney, a British contemporary artist.. To help inspire us, we went to Mayow Park to sketch some trees. The children used these sketches in class. Using acrylic paint, they applied the techniques of dabbing and brushstrokes to create their pictures. Year 4 were also inspired by David Hockney, who uses interesting colours to express himself. The children used Acrylic paint to experiment with colours and used the technique of blending to show the backgrounds. The children sketched the front of the school and used that as the inspiration of their paintings. It was a long day but lots of fun!

In Year Five, the children based their artwork on the artist Vincent Van Gogh. To help them with their painting, the children watched a video of an artist painting flowers using acrylic paints. The video illustrated how one could paint by layering colours as well as using the paint brush to create different shades and textures. The children also looked at some examples of the sunflowers he had painted. GEORGIA O'KEEFFE I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. In Year 6, they painted flowers in O Keefe s style. Georgia O Keefe was an American artist whose work focused on natural objects such as shells, trees, animal bones and flowers. First they practised sketching large images and zooming in on particular details. Using watercolour paints, the children painted flower images and used the artist s technique of sometimes mixing bold, vibrant colours with more subtle colours on the paper.
