Point out the proportions of his body: Point to the boy s head. Is it bigger than his hands? Is it smaller than his body? Before they begin drawing, demonstrate how to sketch the outline of the boy: First draw the outline of the boy with light pencil strokes. Start with the body. Then, sketch the head and limbs. Draw the parts of the face last. The students listen to track 1.1 and answer the questions. At the end of every lesson, play the Clean up song, track 0.2. See Teacher s Book, p. 8 for the lyrics. Anticipating difficulties Students may have problems placing the facial features and body parts correctly and in proportion. Track 1.1: Drawing people Listen and say the colours. What colour is his hat? What colour are his trousers? What colour is his hair? Draw a boy. Track 0.2: Clean up song Resources in the i book ART MASTERPIECES The students will examine Boys with mastiffs by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes ( ). This Spanish painter is famous for his portraits of the Spanish royal family, as well as for his engravings and tapestry cartoons. Boy with mastiffs was part of a series of tapestry cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara in A tapestry cartoon is painted the same size as the final tapestry and shows how it will look when it is finished. Tapestry makers mix threads of different colours to recreate the colours in the cartoon. Colour the boy from the Goya painting. ART seven 7 Unit 1 LEARNING TO LEARN Students should make an effort to keep their work clean and tidy. Comparing body positions Students compare the body positions of characters in a painting. 16

5 23 A clown u ou t æ p^e efi an ma æ å clow>. Objectives UNIT 1 To make a three-dimensional puppet from a two-dimensional drawing To identify the head, limbs and body Scissors Split pins Punch and mat How Arts & Crafts relates to other subjects Worksheet 1. Left hand, right hand SCIENCE Science Differentiate the left hand from the right hand. fifty-seven 57 Show the completed model of the craft: You will cut out the clown and put the pieces together with split pins. The students listen to track 1.2 and point to the clown s body. Next, they cut out all the pieces and punch holes for the split pins. Finally, they assemble the pieces with split pins. Afterwards, encourage students to invent a story in small groups with their puppets. They act out their stories in front of the class. Anticipating difficulties Some students may have difficulties cutting out the pieces. First they should cut the page out of their books. Then it will be easier to cut out the pieces. 1. Ask your partner: Are the hands the same or different? Which is the left hand? Worksheet 2. Shapes and colours 2. Paint the hands with finger paints. MATHS Maths Identify squares and circles. Track 1.2: A clown Listen and point. Point to the clown s head. Point to his right arm. Point to his left leg. Point to his body. Point to his right leg. Point to his left arm. SOCIAL COMPETENCE AND CITIZENSHIP Students who finish early can help slower classmates to complete their work. 17

6 UNIT 1 Objectives To develop creativity To listen closely to a dictation To draw freely Graphite pencil Coloured pencils Rubber Ask students: What colours do you think of on a rainy day? Name colours that make you sad. Name colours that make you happy. Pre-teach the word queen to the class and draw a queen on the board. Explain: This is the story of a queen who likes wearing happy colours on a rainy day. Play track 1.3. The students listen to the dictation and draw the queen. CREATIVITY DRAWING DICTATION The green queen Track 1.3 Listen and draw. The green queen is in her red bed. She looks out the window at the grey day. So, she puts on her black hat. And her blue shoes. And her yellow and pink and purple and orange scarf. Objectives To develop creativity To foster interest in drawing as a means of expression To freely illustrate sounds Graphite pencil Rubber Coloured pencils Set the story scene before listening to the recording: There are two mice. The city mouse lives in a big, noisy city. The country mouse lives in a small, quiet village. They love their homes! Drawing the music The country mouse and the city mouse Track 1.4 The students listen to a series of sounds which represent either the noisy city or the quiet countryside. The students say which mouse hears each sound: Who can hear this sound, the city mouse or the country mouse? Then ask: Are you a country mouse or a city mouse? Draw your favourite mouse. Draw the things he / she can hear and see. Afterwards, students share their pictures with the class. A: I m a city mouse. I like the city. B: I m a country mouse. I like the country. The sounds are: waterfall; fish jumping in the river; birds singing; a woodpecker; leaves moving in the wind; traffic sounds; a police siren; a pneumatic drill; a mobile phone; a dog barking; beeb, beep of a traffic light when green; all the city sounds together. 18

7 UNIT 1 CRAFTS Plasticine figures Objective To represent two-dimensional human figures with plasticine Plasticine White card Glue A toothpick Track 0.3 Song: I m plasticine Track 0.2: Clean up song Draw a person on the board. Elicit the names of the different parts of the body. Students look at the photograph of the clay models on the page. Explain the craft: You will draw people on card and use plasticine to make the bodies. Hand out sheets of white card to each student. They draw whatever simple background they like. Hand out pieces of plasticine of different colours: Use big pieces of plasticine for the body and head. Use smaller pieces for the limbs, hair and parts of the face. Play the song I m plasticine, track 0.3 while students work on the craft. See Teacher s Book, p. 8 for the lyrics. Move around the classroom and ask individual students to describe their craft. After students have completed the craft, play the Clean up song, track 0.2, as the students tidy the classroom. Anticipating difficulties Encourage students to express their own creativity and not simply copy the model. 19
