3 Lesson Session Flora Self-Portrait 1 Engage Complete Henri Matisse paper cut-outs mini-lesson as a pre-assessment for cutting techniques View PowerPoint with artwork by Frida Kahlo and ask students: What is the first thing you notice about this self-portrait? What details does she add to her self-portrait? What do these details tell you about her culture? Develop Discuss state trees, flowers, and birds (flora and fauna) What makes a tree and bird special to different states? How do you relate to any of these states? Is anyone from a country outside the United States? How does nature play a role in your culture? Have students plan their self portrait by selecting at least 3 types of flora that they identify with Create Direct students to select paper that best matches their facial coloring Lead class in a step-by-step construction of a paper cut-out self-portrait Refer to previous proportion discussions and visuals Start with head shape including ears and neck Add eyes with irises and eyelids - use a sharpie to add pupil and lashes Add nose and lips Demonstrate how to properly glue down all the pieces that make the face Reflect Ask students to reflect on what specific flora they will choose to include in their portrait and to come to class ready to add flora details Students should collect any necessary visuals for following class
4 Lesson Session Flora Self-Portrait 2-3 Engage View prototype and have students identify upcoming steps Review Frida Kahlo s work Ask students to share what cultural flora they ve decided to represent Review paper cutting techniques - show student examples from Henri Matisse exercise and have students identify cases of overlapping, cutting to reveal lines Develop Demonstrate how to tear paper in various ways to create hair for both boys and girls, long and short hair, and eyebrows Demonstrate how to cut out various leaf shapes - show the importance of not discarding scraps. Take a basic leaf shape and alter it in numerous ways Direct students to share self-portrait in progress with a partner Partners should discuss and make recommendations about the proportion of the face and hair/flora choices Refer students to the cutting techniques chart Create Students create a collage self portrait and combine with a collaged mat frame to make a paper cut-out self-portrait inspired by the connection Frida Kahlo made between culture and nature Students will use a variety of paper-cutting techniques, demonstrating an understanding of at least three techniques Reflect Students complete a checklist informal assessment listing the paper cutting techniques and attach it to the back of their collage
5 Lesson Session Flora Self-Portrait 4 Engage Ask students to share how they relate to their nature choices through culture Students complete a reflection sheet stating their personal culture, flora choices, and (if applicable) fauna choices Develop Demonstrate how to add fauna for students who are ahead or working more efficiently as an added challenge Re-demonstrate gluing and how to attach the self-portrait to the collage mat frame Create Students may finish their collages by attaching frame, adding fauna, and any necessary details based on their self-assessment from the previous class to self-check their work Reflect Have students update their project checklist taped to the back of their piece to self-check for formal assessment Complete final reflection sheet and submit with artwork
